aleksandra Before you start comparing Harry Potter and Twilight, saying that J.K. Rowling stole the idea for "a werewolf with the surname Black" and that the box set edition of Twilight is "classy" or whatever, hear me out.
The Plots themselves are completely different.
Harry Potter is about friendship and courage, and Twilight is mostly a story about sparkly vampires.. and not to mention that in the second book, the vampires weren't ever there.
Second, "The werewolf Black".
I don't know if before you start blaming J.K. Rowling on stealing ideas, you've actually read "The Prisoner of Azkaban", because here is the truth:
- The Third Book was published in 1999.
- Twilight was published in 2005.

And probably this is even a more important factor, Sirius Black is an Animagus. NOT a werewolf. Seriously, people, even if you've only watched the movie, you'd still get it. If there are actually any ideas stolen, then it's not J.K. Rowling who did it.

And then box sets. WHY? The ideas for Harry Potter and Twilight are completely different, I mean, have you ever seen The Spiderwick Chronicles in a glittery box, which has kisses and smiley faces on it? I am pretty sure you haven't.

Emily I agree. Both series are founded on very different principles, and this "werefolf Black" thing is just silly little 12 year olds nitpicking and trying to defend Twilight. In Twilight's defense, it does get an awful lot of violent criticism (whether it deserves it is another discussion), so I guess that fans will look for little things like that. But still.
I don't believe that the two should be compared at all, they're both in completely different leagues.

MJ I agree! I hate when people compare books that are not related what so ever!!!!! It s just stupid and not fair to either of the nooks. Even if you don't like the books you don't have to make up random things about them!!! I just don't get why people feel they ave to do that!

Natalie Uh harry potter and twilight don't even relate... Wizards vs. vampires... not seeing a comparison

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah there are tonnes of differences... i like HP better though

Natalie Oh me toooooo!!!! Twilight (no offense to anyone. This is just my opinion) sucks

Sophia Although I do believe that they may have some similarities, I don't think they copied one off the other. First, J.K. Rowling published waaaay before Meyer did. Second, pick up ANY teen fiction and you will find similarities to the other half that exist. It may or may not be coincidental. Point is, many works of teen fiction are similar. That's the first reason the two series aren't similar.

Next reason: they have very different plots. First: Twilight sucked, HP didn't. Second, vampires and wizards ARE not the same!. Third, the plot was so different! (I know I already said that.) Whereas in Twilight the main Villain is time, aging, all the things that are separating Bella and Edward, the main Villain in HP is Voldemort. There are a whole bunch of other reasons, but these are the main ones...

two leagues as in Twilight is awful and Harry Potter is genius.........

Kyra I absolutely agree, they can not truly be compared because they are so different. Also the fact that Harry Potter is a million times better adds to the fact that they can not be compared.

Jimmie The only people who even bother comparing them are the people who, for whatever reason, like Twilight in addition to Harry Potter and are trying to reconcile that fact, or people who try to compare/contrast them for the amount of fame and the impressive fandoms they both have.

Looking at the books from a critical point of view is really important, though. Twilight is a very offensive series to me for a lot of reasons, first and foremost because it's incredibly sexist. One of the most poignant things I've heard pointed out in response to this "debate" is to compare the two main, female characters. When the love of Bella's life left her, she curled up in a ball in the woods and tried to jump off of a cliff. When the love of Hermione's life left her, she continued to successfully protect herself and the most wanted wizard to ever live from EVERYONE, while simultaneously managing to hunt down and destroy the horcruxes of fricking Lord Voldemort.

Juliet Chelsea wrote: "The only people who even bother comparing them are the people who, for whatever reason, like Twilight in addition to Harry Potter and are trying to reconcile that fact, or people who try to compare..."

beautifully spoken/written

Juliet agreed

YES. I mean, if the love of your life leaves you and then comes back and thinks everything is going to be okay, you don't fall into his arms like Bella. You punch him, like Hermione.
I completely agree with everything you said.

Totally (again Twilight fans, no offense)! HP is MUCH better!

Totally. Hermione rocks, she's a tough smart cookie!

Brandi people say that cedric almost died when the killing curse was shot at him then Carlyle turned him into a vampire

aleksandra Brandi wrote: "people say that cedric almost died when the killing curse was shot at him then Carlyle turned him into a vampire"

Cedric did die... and he died in 1995.. and Edward was turned into a vampire in 1918..so unless he borrowed a TARDIS... then I don't see that happening :D

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) Haha! What is your picture of Alex?

BubblesTheMonkey I agree, also. People can express their own opinion, but they are nothing alike. One is a romance about vampires and the other is more like an adventure in the wizarding world. I just don't know what people see in books nowadays.

aleksandra Kaleigh wrote: "Haha! What is your picture of Alex?"

My picture is of Karen Gillan as Amy Pond in "The Eleventh Hour" (Doctor Who). Why?

aleksandra Katniss990 wrote: "I agree, also. People can express their own opinion, but they are nothing alike. One is a romance about vampires and the other is more like an adventure in the wizarding world. I just don't know wh..."
Exactly. I mean, for example, I don't use Facebook, but my entire class does. If there is a page entitled "I don't read", they would be fans of it (or whatever you do with those pages, I don't remember).
And if people prefer Twilight over Harry Potter... well....that's a really stupid decision (no offense), but it's their choice

Tatiana P I agree. Comparing Twilight to Harry Potter is like comparing T-shirts and Pants. They're completely different books. In my opinion, Twilight is a horrible book. (I have read the first one.)

aleksandra Tatiana wrote: "I agree. Comparing Twilight to Harry Potter is like comparing T-shirts and Pants. They're completely different books. In my opinion, Twilight is a horrible book. (I have read the first one.)"

Trust me, you do not want to read the others. Ever. I still regret actually spending the time to read them all... worst summer ever.

BubblesTheMonkey Did you try any of the others? You could possibly like those ones better? I know some people who hate the first 3 but love the last. Except, I don't know why they kept reading if they hated the books... So I guess you don't have to. Just an option.

aleksandra Katniss990 wrote: "Did you try any of the others? You could possibly like those ones better? I know some people who hate the first 3 but love the last. Except, I don't know why they kept reading if they hated the boo..."
I've read them all. That's the thing. I was planning to quit after the second book, but there was something about marriage, so I got the other two books (from the library) and a week after I read them I realised I really don't like them. And then I regretted reading them in the first place.

BubblesTheMonkey Okay. Everyone has their own opinions. A lot of my friends don't like the Twilight series either.

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) Alex wrote: "Kaleigh wrote: "Haha! What is your picture of Alex?"

Because it looked like Karen Gillan!! I LOVE Doctor Who!!
Anyone else?

Christalyn Thjorne I am completely astonished that there is even a thread made to discuss this. Common sense would have done justice.

aleksandra Christalyn wrote: "I am completely astonished that there is even a thread made to discuss this. Common sense would have done justice."

I agree, but you should see the people I interact with outside of the internet. And I have been seeing a lot of Twilight threads in which it's discussed how J.K. Rowling might have stolen ideas from Twilight, which is impossible. I just want people to stop comparing them like this. They are completely different.

Jimmie Tatiana wrote: "I agree. Comparing Twilight to Harry Potter is like comparing T-shirts and Pants."

omg this is such a good analogy, can I quote you like... all of the time? Haha

Katniss990 wrote: "I know some people who hate the first 3 but love the last..."
Um, sorry... I, too, made the poor decision of suffering through that series for arguments' sake, and the last book was the worst. After they hacked the weird mutant-baby out of her the next 10 chapters were her and Edward ballet-dancing through the woods, pausing occasionally to make out and give Bella time to direct a soliloquy about how beautiful they were... and then the werewolf was a pedophile/basically set up an arranged marriage and her human parents were somehow like, "All of this is acceptable to me." That is just nonsense.

Sorry if I gave away any spoilers, lmfao

Emma An excellent quote by Steven King:
"Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend."

PostCardashian Kim These are my two favousite books in the world. I love them for different reasons. I don't have kids, but its how i imagine I'll be with the thoughtful, clutzy one, and the brave, occasionally careless one...

Jimmie Emma wrote: "An excellent quote by Steven King:"

I love what someone on Tumblr added when this was going around on there:

"Give credit where credit is due. Twilight is not about how important it is to have a boyfriend. It uses a shallow one-sided high school boyfriend/girlfriend relationship as a metaphor for a teenager’s relationship with god. Which is hilarious. Because Stephenie Meyer unintentionally wrote a really good argument for atheism."

*An abusive boyfriend btw
I believe it was this person who said that.

Hawraa Naqi THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN COMMON!! :P

message 41: by Cat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cat I like both books I LOVE Harry Potter and I used to BE A HUGE Twilight GEEK but not som much anymore, I mean don't get me wrong now Twilight can be good to read but HP has such a classic and classy tone to it it fits for just about (not all) ages when Twilight usually doesn't and they don't really have much in common, just love, death, and mythical creatures and prob. some other things but when you come to it they're both really fantistic books, like and they're both really good so why fight? Just read them both and make peace and if you really just don't likeit then leave it alone, let's try and be mature guys. ( But not always because hey let's admit just about all of us can ne immature...most times) :) haha :D

message 42: by J.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

J.D. Field I never heard that werewolof black arguement, how silly. its like taking one tiny thing in the series and blowing it out of all proportion.

Nicholas I absolutely hate the Twilight series (no offense) but I think that the Harry Potter series is awesome!!!!!!!

Megan Well, the werewolf black thing is a bit weird.. as Sirius and Jacob both turn into wolves, both have the last name black, and both ride motorcycles.. but it's just weird. Not a rip off. Just coincidence.
And people are comparing them just because they're the most popular books of the minute, though Twilight is a disgrace to the name of "book". Twilight has no plot, the characters are all cardboard cutouts, and nobody important ever dies. EVER. Harry Potter has depth, love, good morals... and a plot. How can you compare these books?!?

Chelsea Clifton Megan wrote: "Well, the werewolf black thing is a bit weird.. as Sirius and Jacob both turn into wolves, both have the last name black, and both ride motorcycles.. but it's just weird. Not a rip off. Just coinci..."

Sirius does not turn into a wolf. He turns into a big black dog. The books never say he turns into a wolf, that's Lupin's deal.

I agree with everything else you said, though. :)

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) They are very different books..I have no idea why they are compared to each other..Perhaps becasue they are both very popular..I can only hope The Hunger Games Trilogy's popularity will be just as good..

Megan Thanks. :) Yeah, I admit that he's not a wolf (I'm jumping between many conversations now... oops :) ), but you get the drift.

Nicholas Yeah but the Twilight series copied Harry Potter completely!! What a rip off. The Twilight series copied Harry Potter after the books were released!

Chelsea Clifton Nicholas wrote: "Yeah but the Twilight series copied Harry Potter completely!! What a rip off. The Twilight series copied Harry Potter after the books were released!"

Although I want to agree with you because I personally dislike the Twilight series, you could say the same thing abuot LOTR and Harry Potter. There are so many similarities between Harry Potter and LOTR that you could say that JK got the idea for Dumbledore FROM Gandalf.

The thing is, every book within the fantasy genre is going to be similar in some ways. I have not read the entire Twilight series (I only read a chapter of the first one, and put it down), so I can't really say for certain if it intentionally copied Harry Potter, but the fact that there are similarities doesn't automatically mean that Meyer copied Rowling.

Nicholas Yeah but Lord of the rings is also an awesome series and it is great the way he writes it and it is just a good book!
