Twilight and Harry Potter - there are a lot of differences people should pay attention to

asiyah I agree with the LOTR comparison. And nowadays, it's almost impossible to be COMPLETELY original in writing with the many ways concepts have been explored.

Compare Harry Potter with Star Wars. There are an exponential amount of similarities between them as well. However, that doesn't mean J.K. copied Star Wars.

So though I have not read the Twilight saga, I don't think it copied anything, though many things may be similar.

Megan I haven't read LOTR, but I have read HP and all 4 twilight books (and I'm still regretting reading the whole toilet series, but I had to read it, just to have license to complain ), and I can say that there aren't any real similarities between Twilight and HP (Hey Nicholas, comment, tell me what you think Meyer copied off of Rowling)
There's a lot of hidden meaning in HP, much that relates to real life events and real people, not that I want to get into that topic now.
Many great books have similarities, but that doesn't mean that everything ever written is a rip off of something else.

asiyah Heehee, toilet series.

Hey Megan but Harry Potter is way better and Meyer copied her with all the magical cratures

Nicholas Toilet series is totally a better name for twilight series

Megan Yes, I know that Harry Potter is fantastic, and Toilet pales in comparison (haha), but lots of books have magical creatures, and none of the creatures in question share characteristics (ex, HP vamps don't light up like disco balls, HP werewolves can't change whenever they feel like it)

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) Hawraa wrote: "THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN COMMON!! :P"

?????????

asiyah Technically, EVERYONE is copying the person who ORIGINALLY came up with ANYTHING.

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) Well, yes. Because if your a writer, that generally means you read lot's of books. So all those books influence your writing, so it's their writing and yours, at the same time.

asiyah Also, just because there are elves in LOTR, doesn't mean Harry Potter is copying because they have elves too.

Megan every story with elves written after LOTR isn't necessarily a rip off, same with vamps and werewolves.

Megan House elves :)

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) oh...Well I haven't heard of them before I read HP...I just realized how much I miss little Dobby....

Megan <3 Dobby
RIP little buddy....

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) aww.....that makes me so sad..I feel betrayal to HP... I haven't read it in like 2 years...

asiyah Oh my gosh, I'm sad now because you guys mentioned Dobby...

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) sorry.....I can only reminise the wonderful moments Harry and him spent together...ARG! I feel like crying inside!!

asiyah Me too.*sniff*

Megan Dobby never meant to KILL Harry Potter, only maim or seriously injure...

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) What?? Oh...that's right...I completely forgive him. Oh wait you're quoteing the book..Sorry..its been a long time since I read them..

asiyah And you mean...umm, I can't remember what he says, but I'm pretty sure he never wanted to maim or seriously injure HARRY POTTER. He he tried to hurt Bellatrix.

And his last words were HARRY POTTER!*sobs loudly*

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) aww!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss Dobby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Megan Giveronsomeluv wrote: "And you mean...umm, I can't remember what he says, but I'm pretty sure he never wanted to maim or seriously injure HARRY POTTER.

That rough quote was from the Chamber of secrets

asiyah Oh yeah...*hits head with palm*

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) Dobby...Sorry had too..

Hazel Here, this is where this all came from:

And if you think someone thinking harry potter copies twilight, that's as nothing compared to this:

asiyah BOTH of those girls are complete idiots! But it was pretty funny reading their rants.

Megan What fail arguments! It's fun to read though, how stupid teenage girls are. Even though I am one, these teenage girls are giving a new definition to STUPID.

Have you considered Tolkien in this assertion that Meyer copied Rowling by using magical creatures? Or maybe even the Norse myths that were Tolkiens inspiration? what about the Greco-roman myths? Or any number of other ancient stories that were the origin of the magic creatures we see so widely used these days?

Megan Hazel wrote: "Or maybe even the Norse myths that were Tolkiens inspiration? what about the Greco-roman myths? Or any number of other ancient stories that were the origin of the magic creatures we see so widely used these days?"
The old myths and creatures are coming back into style, lots of writers are using magical creatures now, so the involvement of magical creatures doesn't necessarily mean it's a stolen story.
Nobody accuses Rick Riordan of stealing from C.S. Lewis just because Percy Jackson and Narnia both have creatures from Greek myths.

I wasn't suggesting it was stolen, hence the use of the word "inspiration". Just saying its ridiculous to accuse meyer of stealing it from Rowling :)

Amy I really do not understand how anyone can compare Harry Potter to Twilight. They are both completely different.

message 84: by Cece (new)

Cece How on earth could JK Rowling steal the 'Black' surname? Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was published 6 years before the first Twilight book. I repeat.

SIX. YEARS.

Because yeah, Jo has some future telling ability and copied Stephenie Meyer's character's surname and idea that's going to be thought of or published in a few years time. Not.

So that could mean that Stephenie copied the 'Black' surname for her character (which I doubt).
Besides, Sirius isn't a werewolf *Rolls eyes*
He turns into a dog.

GAHH!!I should stop, I'm getting worked up now!

Amy I agree with you Skye, obviously people are not reading the books properly, or not reading them at all and just watching the film and then attempting to have a discussion about BOOKS.

Nicholas All that you need to know is that the Twilight books are copies of Harry Potter

Hazel Nicholas wrote: "All that you need to know is that the Twilight books are copies of Harry Potter"

If I could actually put the picture of the troll face up here, I would,

Nicholas Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban was made six years before the twilight series

Hazel Nicholas wrote: "Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban was made six years before the twilight series"

your point?

I read the whole comments and stopped when I reach this one. Never seen it before. Toilet series....:)

Nicholas I know. Isn't hilarous. Totally agreed Rachel

I completely agree. They are totally different but any non-idiot would tell you that Harry Potter is no contest better. On Goodreads under quotes for Stephen King it has this, " ' Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.' " I think that is the most epic and true quote ever said. *sarcatically* Werewolves VS. Vampires what an intellectual debate! Spare me. I say Severus VS. Dumbledore!

Yes! I agree, Twilight is shallow and you really don't need a microscope to find the great meaning behind HP.
Though werewolves Vs. Vampires is a slightly interesting question, it's not the kind of question that brings up intellectual debate. HP's debates are better, and Jk leaves a few loose threads for avid fans to discuss. Her characters are not cardboard cut outs, and they can change sides because of their depth ( Ex, Snape.) (ex, Laurent, who looked like he changed sides for 5 min, went back to Victoria just like that. That's not character depth, that's a maybe at character depth, and then disappointment.)
twilight is shallow and pointless, and shouldn't be compared to Harry Potter. It's like comparing "Froggy Learns to Swim" with the works of Shakespeare. Just not a good argument.

that is why I actually opened this topic. I really don't want to debate whether Harry Potter is better than Twilight, because for me, that's the truth. I just wanted to give some Twilight fans things to think of before actually getting into debating stupid things like this.

Great point with the "Froggy Learns to Swim" thing! I read hat book when I was little! Nowhere near Shakespeare! Thanks for agreeing! ;)

Oh sorry! I'm glad a Twilight creep didn't start this.

Kam i just read all the comments, and realized...there hasnt been even ONE twilight fan try to defend their book. I guess their too wimpy to try...learning something from Bella, i suppose.
