Without a doubt the book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand. It will be a long time before this wonderful book is not thought of daily.
What a terrific read.

I'm not finished yet, but I'm currently reading Sophie's Choice by William Styron. I knew nothing about the book other than it won some awards and was made into a movie, which I have never seen.
I am officially in love. Styron writes so beautifully I sometimes want to lick the pages. Haunting, heartbreaking, and surprisingly hilarious. I cannot wait to finish it.

I read Dracula earlier this year. I would say that it is brilliantly written and what suprised me most was that it ws as much of a page turner as a holiday paperback!
I have recommended this to so many people, and 3 have read is and also raved about it.....suggesting that perhaps I am not as much of a philistine as previously suspected :-)

So far I've read 7 out of my 20 book challenge. I just finished Life of Pi and I must say, it was a wonderful book. It is extremely thought provoking and I could hardly put it down.
Sad to say _Eat Pray Love for the wrong reasons because I hated this book so much and I never hate a book.
A Thousand Splendid Suns for me as well! I just could not put down this book once I started reading it. Khaled Hosseini once again has come out with a winner. The depth with which he brings out the emotions of the characters in the novel through his words is just amazing!
Cutting for Stones - it touched me and all the characters were so well shaped and nuanced.
I am done with 17 books of my 20 book challenge for 2011. I have read some extraordinary books this year. Each is special in its own right. It's difficult to pick any one. These are some of them which have left indelible impressions on my mind:
* To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
* A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
* The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
* The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
* Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
There are more but I'll restrict myself to 5 for now [:

I just finished my goal of 30 books (& upped it to 35)-- lots of different books, but these were most memorable:
Cold Sassy Tree--witty in a Mark Twain kind of way, & interesting characters
The Once & Future King-- much funnier than I expected, wonderfully written, & it's about time I read it!
Ender's Game--a real page turner, excellent insight into the nature of humanity & war, & one I should have read long ago, too. (I read it because we had to get it for my son's summer reading for school.)

For me it is The Help, about black women serving rich white families in the south of the US. Shocking that this kind of things still happened in the fifties and the sixties of the 20th century!
We the Living! This could be the best of Ayn Rand! I was not so much in awe of her two great top sellers, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged.
well...the most interesting read was steig larsson`s trilogy.i come from a country where woman are bound to be oppressed and i always had a impression that its not so in developed countries.but after reading trilogy..i realised misogynists are everywhere.im awestruck by the character of lisbeth salander.a hacker and who paid back everyone in the way they deserved.i simply loved this book!!!
The Book of Bright Ieas by Sandra Kring. Such a great feel good book...I laughed, I cried, I got angry. Overall I LOVED it.
I really loved "City of Thieves" by David Benioff. It was one of my "50 books in 2011" and will probably be the one to stay foremost in my mind. It's just unbelievable to imagine the hardships the characters faced, albeit in a fill-in-the-blanks sort of way about his grandfather's war experiences. I can't stand to get cold in the winter and find it hard to fathom walking miles in the snow with nothing to eat.
I am 37 books into my 52 book challenge, and the most interesting books I have read weren't on their own the best books, but together have left a mark on me. I just finished The Long Journey Home by Margaret Robison. ~ 2 months ago, I read her son Jon Elder Robison's book Don't Look Me in the Eye and in February I read Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs; the other son. Fascinating to hear 3 different perspectives on the same family. Anyone touched by mental illness, asperger's, or the workings of a somewhat functional/dysfunctional family should try these out. But I do regret not reading them back to back.
For me it is "One hundred years of solitude" by Gabriel Garcia. Once I started reading it, I just could not put it down till I finished it.
I've read 17 of 23 books in my 2011 challenge.Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. This book took me away with beautiful writing, an unusual story and characters with whom I could connect. I learned a lot about the history, places and cultures I did not know much about before.
Two other lesser known books I loved were The Spanish Bowand The Silence of Trees

P.S. I Love you was a charming and a very sweet tragic story
Almost finished my goal of 75 books this year. I don't know if I can narrow it down to one book, so here's the top three:
Never Let Me Go Kazuo Ishiguro
Disturbing and compelling story
Still Alice Lisa Genova
Amazing insight into a woman's descent into Alzheimers, very readable.
The Help Kathryn Stockett
Absolutely loved this.

I would go with A Thousand Splendid Suns, which I read at the beginning of the year, my first book of 2011 apparently! Well, I go with this one because it is such a touching story and leaves a mark on you, kind of like shaping your life... I loved the story and had a rather mixed- feelings kind of experience while reading it.
Sarika.
Sarika.
the book that has interested me the most on my book challenge thus far has been Fall of Giants........it may be the best book I will read this year, but I will continue to read and see if anything tops that!
There are three that stand out for me. What is the What by David Eggers - this is an amazing story about the Lost Boys of Sudan. Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter by Mario Vargas Llosa - he won the Nobel Prize and he deserved it. I had never read any of his work before and this was a great book. Lastly, The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson - really well written and well researched novel dealing with the Great Migration from the South to the North. I
Two books have really stood out so far this year for me - both because I really wasn't expecting it. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - I still can't believe how much I fell in love with this story. It was pure magic. A Prayer for Owen Meany - I just finished this one last week and I'm going to be thinking about it for a very long time.
I have read 22 of the 50 books...
The most memorable is...The Stand by King.
At second place is Angelology by Danielle Trussonni.
I couldn't put the books away at night...

So far from what i have read it has to be 'A Thousand Splendid Suns'. There really is no contest or even a close second. This is the one book that has really moved me thus far. I am putting off reading it again because of the emotions it invokes in me.

I have to say that in my case it will be "A Thousand Splendid Suns", just because it moved me, the story is so real and sad that it made me wanted to get in the book and help them. This book made me cried! And it was in my thoughts for a while! I think It's a Must read Book specially for women. Freedom is priceless!
Well at first my goal was to read 20 books in 2011,but now I changed it to 22!!:D
So,the books I loved are:

Island beneath the sea by Allende(amazing writing, really detailed story!)

Great question, and excellent responses! So far this year, my top 3 are Unbroken, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and Sarah's Key. I agree with the posters above about A Thousand Splendid Suns. It was excellent.
the Beauty of Humanity Movement by Camilla Gibb: a great story about a country I don't know much about (Vietnam)with wonderful characters. I loved this book.
The most memorable for me was This Burns My Heart. This book really stood out for me because of the strong female character and the sacrifices she made for her family. I laughed and I cried and my heart truly went out to to this woman.
Since everyone else commented, I will too. I originally chose to read 24 books (2 a month) and blew that out of the water in a few short months. Then I decided on 40... well now I am up to 52 (one a week). At my current rate, I may even have to update that number. :)

So far, I have read 19 of the 35 books I hope to read this year.... and the most memorable book I have read is ... The Feast of Love by Charles Baxter. I liked it because it had a different approach, I would say, an approach that could set new boundaries contemporary writers. Also I loved the character Chloé. I read this book in for a college course, contemporary writing. I gave this book five stars... though I have heard the movie is terrible. I won't be seeing it. This is one of those books that I want to remember actual story and not the movie.
A Pigeon and a Boy: A Novel by Meir Shalev. Absolutely amazing! Everyone in my book group could not get over the figurative language in the book that made us feel something magical.
