. . . A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy #1) by Deborah Harkness . So power up those Nooks and start reading! Since here in North Dakota we are still getting snow in May, I'll just pretend this is a Halloween read :)

message 2: by Suellen (new)

Suellen (suvata) Snow, Yikes! I read The Discovery of Witches last month. You should enjoy it.

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 340 comments Don't worry Angela I am the same way! In Colorado we are still getting random bouts of snow it will be 70+ one day and the next snowing...why can't Mother Nature just make up her mind?

I might join in on this one we will have to see.

message 4: by Angie (new)

Angie I am ready this now!!! 150 pages in!

message 5: by Konnie (new)

Konnie (mrsnaz) Just finished this book. It is fabulous!

message 6: by Margo (new)

Margo | 3 comments I will be finishing up the book I am reading at the moment tonight and then will get started on this one. I have had it on my to read list since it came out so can't wait to get started.

☕️Kimberly (Caffeinated Reviewer) (kimbacaffeinate) wonderful book..can't wait for book 2 out in 2012

message 8: by Angie (new)

Angie This book is much longer then I expected (of course reading it on the nook makes it seem shorter since I can't actually see the 600 pages!!)

message 9: by Lacie (new)

Lacie (Darkangel78) (darkangel78) I started this book today. So far, I'm not impressed.

message 10: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 29 comments It gets better as it goes. I started reading it for free in store and then ended up buying it because I liked it a lot to finish it. I am looking forward to Book 2 though...I always get stuck in series.

☕️Kimberly (Caffeinated Reviewer) (kimbacaffeinate) Who would you cast in the role of Matthew..for a movie? Diana?

message 12: by Karen (last edited May 10, 2011 11:50AM) (new)

Karen (karenwb) | 45 comments I agree with Lacie. I started it last week and cannot seem to get interested enough to pick it up again. I'm glad to hear it gets better. Perhaps I will give it another whirl.

message 13: by Lacie (new)

Lacie (Darkangel78) (darkangel78) I'm around page 200 and it still hasn't picked up. Everyone keeps telling me to stick with it and it gets better but I have my doubts. I would have been finished with it days ago but I keep putting it down. I just don't really care about the characters or what happens to them.
I think a lot of this book could have been edited out. The story just gets buried in all the details.

I admit that I decided not to buy this one, based on reading reviews. Many people seem to love it, but I got the impression that it would be the kind of book that if you loved the Twilight series, you would like this. . . . Well, I'm an outcast from the land of Twilight!

I like that this group suggests such a nice range of book options, but I thought long and hard about this, and decided to not be a "slave" to every selection. You know, "So many books, and so little time," etc. Once, I even tried to calculate what my life-span would be, and how many books I had "left" in me! (But I quit keeping track of THAT; too depressing!)

Karen (karenwb) | 45 comments I will try again, Angela. It must be one of those "love it or hate it" things.

cindy stenzel (cindy1944) | 4 comments I loved this book! I listened to the audio version though - hope that doesn't disqualify me from the nook discussion ( I love my nook but have a long commute to work) It's going to be a long wait for book #2!

Cindy, of course it doesn't disqualify you from the discussion! What did you like about it?

message 18: by cindy (new)

cindy stenzel (cindy1944) | 4 comments Angela2932 - I thought the character's were well developed. I think the author did an great job linking the past with current times...I can't wait to see where she takes us in book 2!

On a side note, I've read the Twilight series and while there are similarities, I think you'll find those same similarities/personality traits in many books in this genre.

Crystal | decorating.reader (decoratingreader) Im not very far into the book, around pg 200, & at the beginning I thought about putting it away & not going any farther. It started very slow, BUT I am now glad I didn't give up bc its gotten much more interesting, & I figured if I forced myself to keep going on Eat, Pray, Love I could on this too :)

☕️Kimberly (Caffeinated Reviewer) (kimbacaffeinate) Cindy, I can't wait for book 2 either. This was a great book, filled with history, science, romance and mystery. I think it would be an awesome movie..

message 21: by Bryony (new)

Bryony Smith (msbry) | 7 comments I absoulutely loved this book. I borrowed the hardcover version from a friend and loved it enough that I am going to buy it on the nook. The characters are believable and likeable, the story engaging. I picked it up, thinking I would read a couple chapters before bed one night, the next thing I knew it was 6 am and I was reading the last few pages. I can not wait for the next book. A friend and I can spend hours discussing where we think the series is going, who they are going to run into on their new adventure, et cetera.

By the way, anyone else catch the fact that her dad dreamwalked in exotic locations like "Wyoming"? ;)

message 22: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm I'm also looking forward to book 2. I like her style of writing, the research she put into the book, and the tension over what is going to happen next. Plus, the characters - major and minor - are all wonderful. I would also like to see it made into a movie, although I can't imagine who could play Matthew well.

A lot of people are comparing it to Twilight. With the exception that they both include vampires, A Discovery of Witches is far more complex - it has far more historical research and background information. I would compare it more to the Outlander series.

My one criticism is that Diana isn't as strong a female lead as I would like. Too much of Matthew having to save her. But I think - hope - that we'll see her become a stronger woman in the next two books.

message 23: by Erin (new)

Erin (erinecarroll) I am starting this book today:) Can't wait!

It would make a great movie...I'm hoping book 2 goes into Diana's family history - particularly the witch trials...

message 25: by Erin (new)

Erin (erinecarroll) I just finished this book today and I thought it was great. It was hard for me to get into for the first 100-150 pages, but when it finally picked up it just kept getting better and better. I love how the book ended and can't wait to read the sequel. I agree that this book would make a great movie. I also hope that the 2nd novel goes into the witch trials, and I hope that Diana and Matthew decide to try to start a family of their own.

message 26: by Dorota (new)

Dorota (readinggirl91) | 8 comments I read it last month and I loved it. Yes it is a fantasy, but also a great love story. Can't wait for book #2. There is book #2, isn't there?

message 27: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (basketchik) | 74 comments Wow, I've read over all the comments and when I finish the current book I'm reading I'm going to have to get this one. can't wait.

Jacque,
I have this book in "epub" format if you have Adobe Digital Editions downloaded on your computer, I can send it to your email if you would like?

message 29: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenwb) | 45 comments Just checking in to say I took several of the posters' advice and kept on reading. You were right--it does get better. Thanks.

message 30: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 87 comments I was not impressed with this book. It was repetive and unimpressive. I thought I would scream if there was one more scene with tea drinking being the main character.

Sure Karen! I'll send it right now!
