Ed How much are you able to read each week? I wish I had more time to read more and run. My goal is to read an hour a day on weekdays and 3 hours on sat and sun but I find that hard.

message 2: by Miss Asima (new)

Miss Asima (missasima) I have a lot of free time at the moment so I get to read practicaly all day if I wish to. I've been averaging about five books a week lately. I'll be sad when this free time ends. I've definitly been enjoying it.

message 3: by Ed (new)

Ed That's incredible! I'm jealous

message 4: by Delia (new)

Delia (deedreams) If I had enough money I'd probably read a book everyday. They're so expensive though, so it's more like 2 a week.

message 5: by Traci (new)

Traci I read a lot more before I found GR ;) On a slow week I average two books. On a good week three. But I usually finish a book I'm really enjoying within a 24 hour period (as long as it's not a monster tome).

message 6: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 124 comments Depends. When I'm working, I read about a book a week or about 4 books a month. When I'm not working, 2-3 books per month. Yes, that's backwards from most people, but when I'm busy on a schedule, I organize my time better.

message 7: by Delia (new)

Delia (deedreams) I enjoy reading from 6am to 12 when I can. In the dark, with just a yellowish light :) call me weirdo.

message 8: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments So far this year I've averaged 2.5 per week if this is the 17th week. I've read 44 books so far this year.

message 9: by Bill (new)

Bill (kernos) | 324 comments I start reading at 10 PM each nite and read till I start nodding, usually 2 to 3 hours, prob about 18 hours a week. I wish I had a lot more time.

message 10: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Oh, I forgot to say when. I read whenever I'm not doing something else, which is a lot of time as I'm semi-retired. :) And I listen to audiobooks when I'm driving, cleaning, doing laundry, etc.

message 11: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Not as much as I used to -- back in the pre-Netflix, pre-PC gaming days, I'd literally get home from work and spend the rest of the evening reading. Also, I work from home now, so I no longer have the daily bus commute time. I'm hoping that being on the site here will help me shift my priorities somewhat . . . (Especially since although my rate of consumption has slowed, my rate of acquisition is still pretty much unchanged.)

Most years I also manage to binge during at least a week of vacation at some point during the summer.

message 12: by Clare K. R. (last edited May 01, 2011 01:03PM) (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) If this is the 17th week, as Sandra said, then I've averaged 2 1/4 books a week this year. Almost as much as Sandra :D I read during meals, before bed, and at other random times during the day, depending on what I'm doing.

message 13: by Julie (new)

Julie I wish that I read more, and I used to read more. But as Joseph said there are so many other things that can divert your attention theses days with the computer, not just Netflix or Hulu but Goodreads discussion (*grin*), Facebook, etc. That and I'm training for a half-ironman so that takes a bit of time and when I'm not training, I'm eating (which I read while doing), and then I read at night before going to sleep. However, some nights I'm so tired I don't get but a page or two read. If my time is not monopolized by the TV then I'm doing good. Sometimes I think about giving TV all together but there are so many cool shows out there....Vampire Diaries and Fringe to name a few that I just can't seem to give it up.

OMG! Does your body not scold you? Mine always says 'do it and die, woman' whenever I think about strong workouts!

I haven't much liked where Fringe is going these days, have you? I don't have TV any more, but watch what I want on Hulu or other sites. Never got into Vampire Diaries.

message 15: by Julie (last edited May 01, 2011 03:55PM) (new)

Julie I actually love the adrenaline rush that I get from working out. I've been working out all my life so when I get back from a workout and feel a bit tired and sore I just feel great! Sometimes I have to tell my legs to "shut up" and just go but it's mind over matter. And in this case matter is my muscles thinking they can't do anymore when they can.

I do like Fringe and it has been leading up to this storyline for awhile, so I'm happy to go on the ride. I actually like Faux Olivia which I never thought I would. I love the fact that everything is so interwoven and that you have to follow all the details. That it builds up from episode to episode and you have to have a brain to follow it. Similar to Alias where you couldn't miss an episode, Alias was better though. I also love Walter's comedic timing, he makes me giggle out loud.

message 16: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) Hey, I'm just getting into Fringe--I've watched it on and off but the second half or so of this season has me riveted. It always makes me laugh out loud and I love the characters. I'm hoping to get the DVDs from my library so I can catch up on the first two seasons.

message 17: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I don't have as much time to read these days and the computer/internet is really distracting, that's true. I read while I'm on the internet. I know crazy lol. I've usually got 2 books going at a time plus one before bed. But I still only average 1-2 books per month. 3 if I'm lucky. It also depends on the book, size, how much I'm enjoying it, ect

I've watched Fringe from the beginning. I just thought the episode that went back in time and Olivia was a child was stupid, and also the one where they were chasing her through Bill's mind and they all turned into cartoons was really stupid. I've always liked it though.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I figured the whole cartoon thing had to do with Nimoy being willing to do a voiceover but not the physical work it would've required. I've heard he's retired as an actor because he's ill.

I'm loving Fringe. I thought the second season was a little weak, but I've been loving this season. When it ended on Friday night I was like "No! I need to know what happens, damnit!"

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I have been averaging only one book per month this year, but each of those books have been quite large, such as A Clash of Kings and Deadhouse Gates. Been slowing down some lately as it is the end of the school year and that gets me busy, hope to step it up this summer while I laze about.

I haven't watched it yet. I figure they're heading toward a series finale as the ratings have been poor and it will probably be canceled.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Nope. Back in March they announced that Fringe had been picked up for a fourth season.

Oh good! I missed it.

message 24: by Joël (new)

Joël (jolandaellen) Having time to read 11 hours a day I could do just that but,
reading has once been an addiction for me (no pun intended)
Weekly migraines being one of the consequences.

Not wanting to go back to that I keep myself in check and try to read no more than 5 hours a day, though I have my lapses and have to pay for them :P

Julie Colleen ~blackrose~ wrote: "I figured the whole cartoon thing had to do with Nimoy being willing to do a voiceover but not the physical work it would've required. I've heard he's retired as an actor because he's ill."

That is exactly why they did it that way, when Billy "died" the first time it was because he didn't want to be in front of the cameras anymore. But he was such an important character to Walter and the history of Fringe that they had to give him a proper send off thus the cartoon.

I didn't know that they had renewed Fringe yet. YEAH!!! I know there was a lot of talk about them moving it to Friday, the death slot on Fox, and how it probably wouldn't survive. But the other side of the coin was it was doing better in Friday than other shows they had their previously. So it's a win-win for everyone. They really can't pick up many new viewers because it is so serialized and its doing good where it is based on the past but it won't grow viewership. I'm a happy viewer now!!

message 26: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Chater (chaterpublishing) I write all day and read my own stuff, so by the end of the day I'm tired of reading. I have to make time for pleasure reading, which is hard because I find myself focusing more on the mechanics rather than the story.

message 27: by Chris (new)

Chris Strange (chrisstrange) I don't get to read as much as I'd like, but I try to get in at least an hour a day. If I don't get my fix I get cranky. (grin)

message 28: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) I read for somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour, before bed. Other times when I can get away with it, like if I'm on a bus/train/plane journey.

message 29: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Jun 10, 2011 06:03AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 47 comments I squeeze in reading when I can. I read on the elliptical at the gym, and a bit before bed. I will read at work if it's slow. I read at the dinner table too. I'll even read at stoplights. Generally, I read about 4-5 books a week.

message 30: by Michele (new)

Michele | 85 comments I read at least an hour at night, a little at lunch, sometimes in the afternoon, and I listen to audiobooks while I walk for exercise. I always wish I had more time to read, but unfortunately I have to work, clean, assist my children with homework, etc. My total reading time is probably about 1 - 2 hours a day.

message 31: by Matt (new)

Matt Essell (Mithandriel) I take lunch at my desk so I read during that time. I always read at night after my kids are in bed. That can be for 15 minutes or three hours depending on how exhausted I am.

I would say I average maybe one book a week. Depends on the size of the book (George Martin compared to say Stephen Brust or Geln Cook) and how tired I am.

message 32: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I read about 150 books a year, I guess. Some weeks, I might only read part of a book, but other times I'll read one a day. Depends on how busy life is, how good & long the book is.

message 33: by Beatrix (new)

Beatrix (smiley_omnomnom) | 23 comments I try to read at least 2 and a half hours a day, but with everything that's going on, like exams and stuff, I can't squeeze in much time. I'm on this site hunting for new books to read before ever finishing the one I'm currently reading, too. I figured that giving up TV isn't too bad of a sacrifice if I could dive right into a good book.

Now that summer's coming up, I'm looking forward to having a lot of free time to myself. (:

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

If I read during public commute (including wait time)I get in about 2 and half to 3 hours of reading Monday to Friday. But because I struggle to write when I get home, I use all my away-from-home free time to write and then squeeze reading in when I can't sleep in the after hours. At end of day (7PM to 11PM) electronic media (TV, internet, and video games) claim my attention. The situation remains in flux as writing and reading compete for my attention. Because I am struggling to read a single book and not be a rotation reader, I tend not to finish many books. The advantage of public commute reading is that I tend to read single books because I can't carry much besides teaching stuff and my laptop. But writing has to be the priority so public commute writing will hopefully be status quo for some time.

message 35: by Karen (new)

Karen Azinger I read 50 to 70 books a year, but many of them are thick tomes! And I have favorites that I re-read every year.

message 36: by Sandra (last edited Jun 11, 2011 10:03AM) (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments So far this year I've read 18,828 pages. Today is the 162nd day of the year. So I've read about 116 pages per day. I wonder how many hours that takes me? Never timed it.

message 37: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I'm ashamed to admit that I sometimes read while at work. Okay, not sometimes... almost everyday. Some days I get almost nothing done. Then I come home and read at least 2 more hours. Some nights if the book is good I stay up til 2am to get up again at 7am for work. My husband tells me I never talk to him. I've turned this huge grizzly bear of a man into a harping whinny girl who complains that we don't spend enough quality time together. I think I might have a reading problem... Or maybe just maybe work and relationships are the problem. How dare they get between me and my book fix.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Too cute! I love your fix and nothing should get in the way of that. :-)

message 39: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 87 comments im not a strong reader and at 34 im only beginning to enjoy getting lost in a book. Im getting through around 50 pages a day of any book, hence the reason im moving into fantasy.

Im finding Sci-fi novels, my favourite genre, are generally 200 odd pages and its costing too much too keep ploughing through them. I love these 900+ page fantasy books :)

message 40: by Sheriffkilla (new)

Sheriffkilla Damn I thought I read a lot. I got a long ways to go to looks like. 3 books a week? I mean I read 5 ASOIAF novels in 2 weeks which are fat but I was sick a good 5 days and hardly did anything but lay in bed and read.
Overall I'd say I read about a book a week or 2 weeks. Rarely faster unless I'm either helplessly addicted or have little else to keep me busy.

message 41: by Phoebe (new)

Phoebe (theneveronlinechick) Lol. I stay up most nights (Mainly weekends, but sometimes school nights!) reading, because i get bored, so i tend to be reading multiple books at times! I read alot, and it's practically impossible for mum or my sisters to get me to STOP readin', when they told me to read MORE, so it's their fault! XD Anyway, i read alot, and end up with 7-8 books read every week!

message 42: by Katie (new)

Katie (emkaybee) | 29 comments Hmm, I would say up to three books a week when I'm in the mood for reading. I usually have enough time to read that many but it depends on if I really want to and have a good selection of books. I recently purchased a bunch of books I have wanted to read and that means I will probably be doing 3-a-week or more.

I have a habit too of finishing a book in a day or two, so depending on how I do it I might end up with seven books at the end of a week.

message 43: by Zel (new)

Zel (verablueowl) A book per week, and maybe even half of a book per week when I'm too busy :( I long for summer to come so I can stay up till dawn reading!

message 44: by Phoebe (new)

Phoebe (theneveronlinechick) same here! I enjoy reading way too much! ;)

message 45: by Becky (new)

Becky With audiobooks and ebooks I manage about 1 book every 3 days. My ebooks tend to be massive in size though- reading Wheel of Time and A Game of Thrones series right nows and thats really slowing down the average, lol.

message 46: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 39 comments Normally I'd be capable of about 30-40 pages a day, but what with work and all, I rarely have time to do much reading unless it's an hour or two I can spare before bed. I'm not generally a fast reader anyway, I tend to swirl the book around in my mind rather than gulp it down and reach for another. Although that said I can put it away if I really like the book; I read Prisoner of Azkaban in a night, finished it in the early morning, and Deathly Hollows took me just under two days, which happened to be weekdays.

message 47: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (kyene) I read on my lunch break (Up in the Air) and I read before bed (East of Eden). My break is an hour but I can't always spend the whole time reading. Before bed depends on how sleepy I am :)

message 48: by Traci (new)

Traci On a work day, reading when I can, I average between 100 and 150 pages. On a non work day I can usually easily read 200, sometimes 300, pages. I read in the morning, durring part of my commute, when I get home, while I workout, before I go to bed...I need to start reading at lunch again...basically whenever I can.

message 49: by Leah (new)

Leah (leahsimon) I tend to be an all or nothing kind of reader. I can't just casually work my way through a book. I'll read and read and read and neglect everything else until I'm done with the book. Then I have to take a break to catch up on everything else. Then I start over.

I'm apparently not very good at prioritizing. Either that or I just get too easily sucked into the book I'm reading.

message 50: by Nick (new)

Nick depends on the amount of homework and the size and word choice of the book but i can normally get anywhere from 1 to 2 books read a day.
