Ed | 67 comments How much are you able to read each week? I wish I had more time to read more and run. My goal is to read an hour a day on weekdays and 3 hours on sat and sun but I find that hard.

message 2: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 69 comments I tend to binge read. I'll spend a half hour or so a day reading on lunch break during weekdays, but outside of that - if I've got my hands on a book I LOVE, I will read for hours and hours over the course of a few days. Sometimes life keeps me distracted, though, and then I don't touch books for days on end. So it varies widely.

message 3: by Jotale (new)

Jotale (aiustis) | 10 comments An hour a day. I wake up. Do my stretches and then read for 30 min. Then I read before bed for another 30 min.

message 4: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (missionmelissa) I want to say an hour or hour and a half a day and then more on the weekend. It also all depends on what I'm what I'm reading and how much free time I have.

message 5: by Diane (new)

Diane | 42 comments I will sometimes want to read a lot, and then I will go for a stretch without reading. When I'm reading a lot, I read 30 minutes during lunch, about 4 hours in the evenings, and roughly 12 or more hours over the weekend. I usually read while I'm on the treadmill or stair climber (45 minutes twice a week). And then there's those 15 minute breaks, and sitting in waiting rooms.....

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2719 comments I read on the train to and from work - and that's about 20-30 minutes each way, depending on which train I get. I also generally read for about 20 minutes when I get home from work, before the hubby gets home, and then about an hour or so before bed.

I often read more on the weekends, but some weekends I barely get any reading done. It depends if I have errands or events or things or not.

Craig Hallam (craighallam) I've constantly got a book within arm's reach. With Kindle so accessible on my phone, I'm sure I'll soon go screen blind. I don't watch TV unless it's something I'm really grips me (The Walking Dead has me hooked), so books are my main time-killer.

Unlike Jotale, the only parts of me that work out are my thumbs if I'm reading a particularly heavy book hahaha

message 8: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 418 comments A lot. Some weeks I'll polish off three to five books, others, only one or two. I read over 100 books per year, typically.

message 9: by Ed (new)

Ed | 67 comments I just lately started reading on the phone via kindle while waiting places.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Moved to the appropriate folder.

Also, in a good week, I can get through 3-4 books.

If i'm being lazy, one.

message 11: by Bill (new)

Bill It really depends, but one or two books on a good week, I think.

message 12: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Some weeks none, other weeks 2-5 books.

message 13: by Craig (new)

Craig Hallam (craighallam) I'm always torn between buying a book and using the Kindle on my phone. I love having access to several books in a little box because I have a nasty habit of reading two or three books at once. But I'd hate to think I'm contributing to the downfall of paper publications.

The voices are unclear on this one...

♥Xeni♥ (xeni) | 464 comments Wow, a lot of you have such structured reading lives!

I could never do that. xD I read when I feel like it... I suppose I'm rather indulgent that way.

Depending on how much my current book(s) is(are) gripping me, I'll read anywhere from 2 hours to 14 hours a day. I'll read on the train to school, during breaks, in class if my teachers are slow on the uptake, then always before bed, sometimes before getting up if I'm not late (although I mostly am :P )

If I tried structuring my reading I'd be so behind on my 200+ books a year!!

message 15: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin Reading's a pleasure, not a chore, so I refuse to structure or mandate it. I sometimes have to ration in, much though I dislike to, or go on reading that which I need for class instead of the current literary obsession. Sometimes, when I am truly floored by a book, I will read it straight through in one gulp, and damn the cost.

I got Blackout and All Clear on the eve of an exam... It didn't go well, and I wound up getting an 87. But I couldn't really force myself to stop and concentrate on Greek philosophy. It was gruesome.

On the other hand, Passover week I was so busy doing other stuff that I didn't even get through a single chapter. It depends on the week, the book, the mood, the weather, my health and God alone knows what. It helps, too, if my eyes don't hurt. I'd say my average is a book a week or so.

I got a Kindle. It's a great thumb workout! Also. I feel like a move away from printed publications or limited printed publications is a good thing. I use to think it wasn't but I see many benefits.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I usually get in about an hour a day of reading, maybe more on the weekends. It really fluctuates, especially lately, I recently got a Kindle that I haven't been able to put down, and I had a couple of novels suck me in so completely that I devoted most of my free time to reading them.

message 18: by Angelmass (new)

Angelmass | 13 comments It really depends with me. I go in phases. Couple of months in a video game phase, then a tv/movie phase and then a reading phase. The non reading phase I finish very few books. The reading phase I read about 15-20 a month.

message 19: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) This really depends on the week. I read for about an hour each night before bed - but this week I also had two transatlantic flights to fill! :)

message 20: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 148 comments Too much? I read all the time and multiple books. I usually read 5 books and several magazines a week on average.

How?
I was put on disability 6 years ago and have lots of free time! Plus I am an abnormally fast reader. Not a speed reader, just fast.

I'm a confirmed bookaholic in fact. I collect books, read books, talk books, and in-between I take care of my cats.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

surprise twist: Brett's cats are made of books.

message 22: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ (xeni) | 464 comments Ah hah! Cats made of books?? Let me know where I can acquire mine! It seems like the most perfect combination! :D

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

A lot less now I dont do the two hour commute

message 24: by Desiree (new)

Desiree (tondola) | 5 comments I never measure it. I used to read more on the way to work, but now I live 5 minutes from the office...on average I'm about 1 book/week, more if the books are not so thick and they are so enthralling I'll make excuses with myself to find occasions to read. At times I even choose to get the bus rather than have someone pick me up for a night out, so that I have that 15/20 minutes to read ;o)

message 25: by Douglas (new)

Douglas Bittinger (dougbittinger) | 60 comments I read a novel for about 2 hours each evening before I go to sleep. But, I spend most of my days reading SOMETHING, but tht's for work, not for enjoyment.

I know what you mean! I'm a PhD student so I'm up to my eyeballs in academic papers, in my 'work' time.

How about dogs? Reminds me of the Disreputable Dog in Lirael, which wasn't exactly made of books, but of Charter marks, which are like letters or runes. So obviously you need to go to the Old Kingdom and have someone make you a Charter cat. :D

message 28: by ♥Xeni♥ (new)

♥Xeni♥ (xeni) | 464 comments I actually never went past Sabriel in the series...

Also, I loathe dogs. They scare me. Cat person all the way. So I say no to the dogs!

I think Lirael was actually a better book in some ways, despite the dog (I don't hate dogs but I'm more of a cat person too). The cat in that series, Mogget, was definitely scarier for me because it was so...indifferent to the safety of those around it, and only helping because it was forced to, basically. In Sabriel too you see that it is very dangerous if uncollared.

And I did say you should have a Charter cat rather than a dog. :)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2719 comments Xeni - I don't like dogs, in general, either, but the Disreputable Dog in Lirael is an awesome character. (Though I think Mogget is also awesome as a character, but in a totally different way. I love Mogget's snarkiness and indifference. Very fitting for him to be a cat, too, what with the stereotypes of cats being aloof and whatnot.)

I also agree with Andre that I think Lirael and it's sequel are stronger books than Sabriel, though I loved it, too.
