So, are we still going to start this one on May 1st?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Sans, This looks like a lot; however, you can give short answers.

Magic Study (Study, #2) by Maria V. Snyder Lisa’s questions on Chapters 1-4

How cool is it that the Zaltana homestead live in giant trees?

What did you think when Iyrs (of the Jewelrose Clan, Fourth Magician in the Council) explained the Ethical Code and then later that she and Yelena were linked as teacher and student through a pathway in their minds. Does that pathway work both ways?

What’s up with Leif?

Only Bain Bloodgood has achieved master level status; is that what Leif wants?

Is it just me, or are there a lot more spots of subtle and tongue-in-cheek humor in this book?

Yelena says her reasons (in Chapter 4) for being in Sitia are twofold: “to avoid being executed and to learn how to use my magic.” Were you as surprised as Yelena that she cried when her mother, Perl, took her to her bosom? (Chapter 2)

Did you feel as sad as I did when Yelena watched Irys and the children leave her behind at the Zaltana homestead?

What did you think about Nutty’s reveal that most in the Zaltanaian homesteaders think Yelena is a spy from Ixia?

Is Yelena going to have to start wearing gaudy print dresses exclusively, throw down her weapons, and take off her leather boots just to prove she is not a spy? LOL!

Is Yelena’s recall of her first meeting with Irys all that is causing her to have the conflicting feelings of comfort/safety and choking/smothering?

Yelena says “It was ironic how both my relations with Irys and Valek began badly.” Is she setting us up or giving us a hint with regards to Yelena’s relationship with Leif?

Is Yelena going to help her father, Esau, with the leaf oil?

Do you think for a minute that Valek killed little babies in their sleep?

What did you think of Esau’s white notebook and his charcoal drawings of Yelena? And his field guide notebook?

“YESTERDAY.” What did you think about the end of Chapter 3?

The end of Chapter 4 – What? A cliffhanger? Are we doing this again? LOL! Sans, my friend, we do select the craziest stopping spots!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa’s answers to her questions on Chapters 1-4

How cool is it that the Zaltana homestead live in giant trees?
Pretty cool. Sort of a little Swiss Family Robinson action going on there.

What did you think when Iyrs (of the Jewelrose Clan, Fourth Magician in the Council) explained the Ethical Code and then later that she and Yelena were linked as teacher and student through a pathway in their minds. Does that pathway work both ways?
Hum. I could understand Yelena’s reaction and questioning attitude. I don’t know if it’s both ways. Iyrs knows too much about blocking. Maybe Yelena will get better at this as the books progress.

What’s up with Leif?
Man-oh-man, this dude needs a Xanax. I think he has some issue, what with being with Yelena when she was taken at age six. I also think his gift has given him a little too much arrogance for his own good.

Only Bain Bloodgood has achieved master level status; is that what Leif wants?
Yep.

Is it just me, or are there a lot more spots of subtle and tongue-in-cheek humor in this book?
This book has a totally lighter tone, right?

Yelena says her reasons (in Chapter 4) for being in Sitia are twofold: “to avoid being executed and to learn how to use my magic.” Were you as surprised as Yelena that she cried when her mother, Perl, took her to her bosom? (Chapter 2)
I was a bit surprised. Poor baby. Some unresolved issues, to be sure. By the end of Chapter 4 we see that her mother has some unresolved issues too.

Did you feel as sad as I did when Yelena watched Irys and the children leave her behind at the Zaltana homestead?
I felt pretty sad. It made me realize I have really bonded with Yelena after the first book. Aha…and when Yelena bought Valek a present, my heart squeezed.

What did you think about Nutty’s reveal that most in the Zaltanaian homesteaders think Yelena is a spy from Ixia?
Man-oh-man! Valak needs a better image consultant. My eyebrows went to my hair line – but it makes sense.

Is Yelena going to have to start wearing gaudy print dresses exclusively, throw down her weapons, and take off her leather boots just to prove she is not a spy? LOL!
I hope not.

Is Yelena’s recall of her first meeting with Irys all that is causing her to have the conflicting feelings of comfort/safety and choking/smothering?
Hummm. Don’t know yet. But I have a suspicious nature.

Yelena says “It was ironic how both my relations with Irys and Valek began badly.” Is she setting us up or giving us a hint with regards to Yelena’s relationship with Leif?
One or the other. LOL! (See answer to previous question.)

Is Yelena going to help her father, Esau, with the leaf oil?
Yep.

Do you think for a minute that Valek killed little babies in their sleep?
Nope.

What did you think of Esau’s white notebook and his charcoal drawings of Yelena? And his field guide notebook?
That was neat. I ♥ artists. And I’m glad she has the second book since Leif isn’t talking to her!

“YESTERDAY.” What did you think about the end of Chapter 3?
Ahhh. My feelings, like a pendulum, swing in the other direction for Leif.

The end of Chapter 4 – What? A cliffhanger? Are we doing this again? LOL! We do select the craziest stopping spots.
Ambushers! Yes, we do!

Sans How cool is it that the Zaltana homestead live in giant trees?
Given my level of vertigo, not so much! I tend to fall forward when looking at my shoes. I can't imagine having to live in a treehouse my entire life!

What did you think when Iyrs (of the Jewelrose Clan, Fourth Magician in the Council) explained the Ethical Code and then later that she and Yelena were linked as teacher and student through a pathway in their minds. Does that pathway work both ways?
I think so, but I think Yelena doesn't know how to "receive", just "transmit" so far.

Good point about Yelena's concern!

What’s up with Leif?
He's a bratty little ass-hat who is too used to being the center of attention. It seems like he's sporting a big case of only child syndrome.

I grant that being there when she disappeared is likely hard on him, but you'd think he'd be relieved at least!

Only Bain Bloodgood has achieved master level status; is that what Leif wants?
Heeeey, good question! Hmmm. I think he'd love to be revered as the only second penis-carrying person in the south to achieve master level. More people would have to pay attention to him.

Is it just me, or are there a lot more spots of subtle and tongue-in-cheek humor in this book?
I think you're right. I'm also recognizing more things from the real world in this book. Like the lemur-like creatures!

Yelena says her reasons (in Chapter 4) for being in Sitia are twofold: “to avoid being executed and to learn how to use my magic.” Were you as surprised as Yelena that she cried when her mother, Perl, took her to her bosom? (Chapter 2)
Just a little. I can see her desire to have a real family, but her distrust runs so deep, I was surprised that she broke down that fast with the woman.

Did you feel as sad as I did when Yelena watched Irys and the children leave her behind at the Zaltana homestead?
I did. ;_;

What did you think about Nutty’s reveal that most in the Zaltanaian homesteaders think Yelena is a spy from Ixia?
Kinda laughable, since we've been seeing everything through Yelena's eyes, but understandable after I started thinking about it. She's a complete unknown to them. But....to have a spy not even try to fit in? That's got to be an epic double bluff they're attributing to her!

LOL! Yeah, Valek should consider a PR firm! But even he admitted that his reputation serves him better than having to prove himself left and right.

Is Yelena going to have to start wearing gaudy print dresses exclusively, throw down her weapons, and take off her leather boots just to prove she is not a spy? LOL!
Oh, hells to the no! She'd come close to dieing of mortification, then beat up everyone connected to her wardrobe!

Is Yelena’s recall of her first meeting with Irys all that is causing her to have the conflicting feelings of comfort/safety and choking/smothering?
She's had no one to rely on for so long, I think she's dealing with so many more issues than even she knows.

Yelena says “It was ironic how both my relations with Irys and Valek began badly.” Is she setting us up or giving us a hint with regards to Yelena’s relationship with Leif?
Hmmm. I want to say yes, but it feels a bit obvious. I don't think they'll actually have a good relationship.

Is Yelena going to help her father, Esau, with the leaf oil?
Interesting question! I'm really not sure.

Do you think for a minute that Valek killed little babies in their sleep?
I don't, not any more. After seeing him ship off that farmer in the last book after the guy's son died, I'm thinking Valek started a kind of underground railroad, shipping northern children to the south for adoption.

Glad to see we've both still got the love for Valek. ^o^

What did you think of Esau’s white notebook and his charcoal drawings of Yelena? And his field guide notebook?
Awwww, Daddy's little girl!

“YESTERDAY.” What did you think about the end of Chapter 3?
WTF?? Once I read the first few sentences of chapter four, it almost sounds like he's bitter about not being able to play the hero by finding her himself.

I wish I could be a bit more confident in Leif like it sounds you're starting to!

The end of Chapter 4 – What? A cliffhanger? Are we doing this again? LOL! Sans, my friend, we do select the craziest stopping spots!
We might need to re-think our strategy for Passion Unbound!

Wow! I didn't even think of that. Good catch. You had some great insights about him. And don't think I'm at all 50/50 with regards to Leif. I am a mistrustful little thing. (Well, not so little.) And he's a big penis-carrying asshat still.

So sorry about the heights thing. I guess that means you didn't go on that attraction at Disneyland?

I'm liking the addition of the animals... I think there may be some surprises in this area.

message 10: by Sans (last edited May 02, 2011 06:48PM) (new)

Sans What did you think of Leif's explanation for why he doesn't like Yelena?
He's still an ass-hat. I can kind of understand his issues, but he really doesn't have contact with reality if he thinks all those years in Ixia wouldn't have effected her. For heaven's sake, she remembers none of her life before her abduction. How could she possibly celebrate something she never knew of or expected?

How did you react when Leif said no Zaltana could read minds?
I'm thinking we may have just found out what one of Yelena's special abilities are. Or that's why the mental connection between her and Irys isn't a two-way street.

Do you think Yelena should have let Leif go by himself? Do you think the ambush would still have happened?
As much as I'd like him to be taught a lesson, I think they would have killed him just to try and flush Yelena out.

Were you surprised Leif had set Yelena up?
Not at all. Ass-hat.

End of chapter 5. Were you surprised?
Actually, I was! Nice twist there.

Do you think Yelena has handicapped herself by using her bow as a focus?
It really looks that way. It's kinda like her special blankie and she's unable to function without it. Girlfriend needs to learn some new tricks.

Yelena had Fern's green cloth with her even though she sent the rest to her cousin. Think she knew she'd need it sooner rather than later?
I admit I was curious why she kept it with her. Good to see she's putting it to good use! I wonder if part of her magic is premonition?

Was I the only one cheering when she took Goel out?
I did a little happy dance on my chair. ^o^

Reactions to Cahil and Yelena's sparring match?
He's such a boy. Totally not willing to admit when he's been bested, especially by a girl. Wanker.

Another cliffhanger. Am I the only one headdesking?
WTF is up with the cliffhangers??

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa’s answers to Sans questions for Chapter 4-8

What did you think of Leif's explanation for why he doesn't like Yelena?
Chalk it up to his immaturity, self-centeredness and asshattery for him not considering her years in Ixia might not have been the greatest -- even though she WAS KIDNAPPED! He is basically accusing her of Stockholm Syndrome w/o evidence.

How did you react when Leif said no Zaltana could read minds?
As soon as he said this, I knew Yelena would be able to! Didn’t doubt for a minute she is a Zaltanaian.

Ahhh…you knew it too. Oh, you also wrote: “Or that's why the mental connection between her and Irys isn't a two-way street.” Hadn’t thought of that. Maybe it’s just not developed.

Do you think Yelena should have let Leif go by himself? Do you think the ambush would still have happened?
Yep. And Nope.

Ahh…Really, you think they would have killed him? I do too…I’m just surprised you do. LOL!

Were you surprised Leif had set Yelena up?
I was a little. I guess I am still naïve. **sigh** Do you think he regrets it a bit; he did stand up when Goel cracked her on the head again? (See, I’m hopeless.)

End of chapter 5. Were you surprised?
Yeah! Interesting.

Do you think Yelena has handicapped herself by using her bow as a focus?
Nope.

Yelena had Fern's green cloth with her even though she sent the rest to her cousin. Think she knew she'd need it sooner rather than later?
Knew what she was thinking the minute she selected the color. I am very aware of colors.

Ohhh…you thought she might have been a bit psychic? Nah, just aware of her surroundings.

Was I the only one cheering when she took Goel out?
Nope. Only one question? Will he be the Biggest F*cker in this book, or is he just a littler f*ucker?

Ahh...you were chair dancing; wish I could have seen that. (view spoiler)

Reactions to Cahil and Yelena's sparring match?
I thought it could be a bridge toward peace and I could hear Aretha Franklin singing her mega hit in the background: ♪ “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” ♬ Alas, I was wrong about the respect thing.

Ahh…you said: “Wanker” Ditto! You’re so smart.

Another cliffhanger. Am I the only one headdesking?

Ditto! Again to your: “WTF is up with the cliffhangers??” I really do think it is just the luck of the draw. Or maybe it is b/c I don’t want to stop reading…but, I’m being good.

P.S. Your pic didn't come through for me...what is it?

Good point about Goel. I think both he and Leif are going to be little f*ckers. I'm curious if another baddie is going to be introduced when she reaches the Citadel.

Yeeeke! Yelena is going to be separated from Valek for five years! No, calm down and keep reading. **sighs with relief** What do you think about Yelena being placed with the fifth year apprentice students?

This is twice now I’ve read “reason for existence”. Is this some kind of an assignment at birth thing going on here?

Irys tells Yelena there are holes in the “blanket” of magic where the magic doesn’t work. Comments.

Were you surprised Cahil is to be her riding instructor? How about that Yelena told him about her ability to read the horses minds? Do we hear Aretha singing yet?

Man-oh-man! I wish I had the ability to order someone else to do something for me instead of doing it myself (thinking of the lighting candle scene). Guess that why there is going to be a fire study, right?

Do you think Yelena will do something for the homeless orphans?

OMG! There’s a murderous rapist stalking the countryside. Do you think Yelena’s gut reaction that magic is involved is correct? Could it be someone we’ve already been introduced to?

What strange magic does the Sandseed Clan have? Did I miss something?

Was Cahil taking Yelena’s advice and running, or was there another reason for his being in a lather?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Answers Her Own Questions for Chapters 9-12

Yelena’s gone all Doctor Doolittle now! Comment.
I was wondering why MVS was bringing more animals into the story; I thought it was to lighten the tone. But, nope, it is even more of Yelena's expansion with regards to her mind reading talent. I love animals, so it is kinda neat!

On the question of Yelena breaking the Ethical Code. Oh, so the Sitians believe in self-defense . Comment.
Well, that’s a relief.

Yeeeke! Yelena is going to be separated from Valek for five years! No, calm down and keep reading. **sighs with relief** What do you think about Yelena being placed with the fifth year apprentice students?
I was worried there, as you can see, but I’m all better now. Sound appropriate.

This is twice now I’ve read “reason for existence”. Is this some kind of an assignment at birth thing going on here?
I think there is something like this. Or is it a soothsayer thing? Letters from Heaven?

Irys tells Yelena there are holes in the “blanket” of magic where the magic doesn’t work. Comments.
Utt oh…that doesn’t bode well, I think. Yelena’s going to be caught in an area like that and have to rely on her physical ability.

Were you surprised Cahil is to be her riding instructor? How about that Yelena told him about her ability to read the horses minds? Do we hear Aretha singing yet?
I was. And again, I was a bit surprised she divulged this info. Nope; no Aretha yet, he’s just thinking how he can use her.

Man-oh-man! I wish I had the ability to order someone else to do something for me instead of doing it myself (thinking of the lighting candle scene). Guess that why there is going to be a fire study, right?
LOL! Thought that scene was funny. Well, she can’t master it all in one or two books if this is a series. Plus, I beginning to think our little Yelena is headed for greatness, magician ways that is!

Do you think Yelena will do something for the homeless orphans?
I hope so. Probably. But maybe it was just a point MVS wanted to bring up to Cahil about disparity in this dystopian world.

OMG! There’s a murderous rapist stalking the countryside. Do you think Yelena’s gut reaction that magic is involved is correct? Could it be someone we’ve already been introduced to?
Yes! Could be a Rogue Magician? Do you think it is Leif? Now see, here I am, just asking more questions.

What strange magic does the Sandseed Clan have? Did I miss something?
I’m too tired to do a search. I check this out later. I know they were mentioned, but I can’t remember specifics.

Was Cahil taking Yelena’s advice and running, or was there another reason for his being in a lather?
I don’t know! Interesting! **speculates about what he was up to**

I’m loving Kiki. Do you ride horses?

I never did the horse thing much, as it was my cousin’s really BIG thing and I let her go with it. She even became a jockey for a while. Plus, I’m more of a small animal lover. (Big dogs are okay.) But I have ridden horses.

Could this “bad man/bad smell” be the Big F*cker?
Maybe.

End of Chapter 12: Deckbanger!
Definitely! LOL!

Hi, Rachel! Glad you popped in. Alas, I don't know the answer to this one. I have always tried very hard not to do so, but I have slipped. I think it is b/c health care workers consider the improvement/condition of their patient(s) a reflection on them. (Like a mechanic and someone’s car.) Sans Sans' answers to Lisa's questions for chapters 9-12

OMG, so glad you posted these already. I was itching to talk to you about today's read during lunch!

Yelena’s gone all Doctor Doolittle now! Comment.
Love the Doolittle reference! Yeah, I was curious about that too. But she can only "talk" to the horses so far. I'm guessing less "intelligent" animals can't speak the way horses can? What about cats, dogs, dolphins? Ok, getting carried away. I actually think this is a good asset for Yelena's bag-o-tricks. Animals often have a much better sense of the world around them, so it'll be helpful for her to have those extra eyes. Like at the end of chapter 12!

On the question of Yelena breaking the Ethical Code. Oh, so the Sitians believe in self-defense . Comment.
Aaaaah, the beloved shades of grey! If I had to change one thing about the Commander's way of ruling it would be get get the woman to see the grey in life. At least the Sitians can see that there are not cut and dry answers to everything.

Yeeeke! Yelena is going to be separated from Valek for five years! No, calm down and keep reading. **sighs with relief** What do you think about Yelena being placed with the fifth year apprentice students?
OMG, I know. I started to panic too! Thank goodness that will NOT be the case. She definitely can't be "held back" and take classes with the younger students. I wonder if she'll be older than even most of the apprentices? Did the book mention how old they are? And was I the only one swooning a bit when Valek "saved" her from Roze's mental attack when she reached the Citidel? I'm convinced Irys is wrong and that Yelena really did reach out to Valek, not just a manifestation of what he represents to Yelena in her mind.

This is twice now I’ve read “reason for existence”. Is this some kind of an assignment at birth thing going on here?
Interesting question. It could be Sitia's version of Ixia's "everyone has a job to do" rule.

Dude, that note from God is awesome.

Irys tells Yelena there are holes in the “blanket” of magic where the magic doesn’t work. Comments.
I actually didn't think anything of this until you mentioned it. What if...what if Valek was raised in a area with a hole in it? And that's why he's immune to magic? (Yes, it IS all about Valek for me! ^o^)

Heeey, good point! See, I'm so focused on Valek (who is NOT in this book enough for my taste, as you can tell), that I kinda forgot that these books are really about Yelena. ^o^

Were you surprised Cahil is to be her riding instructor? How about that Yelena told him about her ability to read the horses minds? Do we hear Aretha singing yet?
That did surprise me, but it really shouldn't have. Of course dude had to have something to do in between gathering an army to take his throne back. I think it'll take a lot more to get Cahil to really respect Yelena. Unfortunately, I think when that time comes, he's gonna fall for her. Hard. Remember how he was blushing when he admitted that he carried her to her rooms? *raises an eyebrow*

Man-oh-man! I wish I had the ability to order someone else to do something for me instead of doing it myself (thinking of the lighting candle scene). Guess that why there is going to be a fire study, right?
LOL! Oh, yeah. But I wonder. Does "making" someone do something technically go against the Ethical Codes? She's not directly invading their thoughts, but she's making people do things they otherwise wouldn't do. That could be a problem, especially if Roze is out for Yelena's blood. (And what a bloodthirsty b!tch Roze is!)

Do you think Yelena will do something for the homeless orphans?
Hmmmm. It depends on how much power she gets. I think we're being set up for Yelena to become a fifth high magician (er, I think that's what they're called? I can't remember right now!). If she reaches that kind of status, I think she'll insist on creating a shelter or something for the orphans, like what Brazel's orphanage should have been. Y'know, if he wasn't an evil bastard.

Good point about Cahil! He's got some grand ideas, but could he really do better than the Commander? I like that Yelena said no government is perfect.

OMG! There’s a murderous rapist stalking the countryside. Do you think Yelena’s gut reaction that magic is involved is correct? Could it be someone we’ve already been introduced to?
OMG, I know! What is it with all the raping and threats of rape in these books? I can't remember, are there magical objects in this world? If so, I think whoever the murdering rapist is, is using one of those. Or is using someone with magic abilities for himself. I don't think the baddie has his own powers. And I do think we've met him before. I just don't know who it is!

Leif? Hummmm...only if he's got an alternative personality or someone is using him without his knowledge.

What strange magic does the Sandseed Clan have? Did I miss something?
Ah, that was in Assassin Study, the novella between the first book and this one. Remember Valek and a Sitian woman were trying to save Yelena from the assassin and they had to travel through the plains to make up time? That clan puts a blanket of energy to confuse anyone who trespasses on lands. Since Valek is immune, he was able to get through there after talking with a couple of the clansmen and explaining what he was doing.

Was Cahil taking Yelena’s advice and running, or was there another reason for his being in a lather?
I really don't think he's man enough to take her advice yet. I almost want to say he was at a romantic rendezvous, but...*shrugs*

I’m loving Kiki. Do you ride horses?
Sadly, I don't. I've always wanted to though!

Could this “bad man/bad smell” be the Big F*cker?
Oh yeah. This one's the Bit F*cker for the story. And if it's not him, they're definitely connected.

End of Chapter 12: Deckbanger!

Definitely a headdesk of epic proportions!

LOL! Rachel, I think it's a combination of trying to not brag: I did this! See what I did? That was me (at least that's how it usually ends up sounding to me!) and distribute the blame if something goes wrong. ^_~

Yes, but I let it slip from my mind. I think you are on a roll today and being VERY insightful! Whereas I didn't even mention Tula and Yelena reaching her like the Commander! **hangs head in shame**

Hey now, none of that! I didn't mention Tula either! I'm just focused on the romancey bits today. I'm also going a mile a minute thanks to the large iced soy latte and vegan ginger cookie that I had for my very late lunch. @_@

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Finally, I got to look at you video clip! Doctor Who!! (I was trying not to peek ahead of time.) I have been TiVo-ing them and only watched the ultimate guide that was on. Have you been watching for years? It is all new to me. Which is shocking since my older brother (who ruled the TV back in the day) was/is a big sci-fy fan.

Now that's a definitely possibility!

Oh, absolutely! It's like 25 pages and took me 10 minutes to read. ^_~

When you've had a dry spell as long as I have and half of what you read is smut...

I HEART DOCTOR WHO!!! I grew up watching the old series. I really only remember Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor) forward. Everyone in my family is a Who freak. I want Ten (David Tennant's Doctor) to bend me over the TARDIS console and take me on a wild ride. *_*
