Atishay | 1451 comments Hi Teresa! Welcome to TNBBC !

message 4852: by Sera (new)

Sera I am working my way through the Richard III series, The Rose of York by Sandra Worth. I'm on the second book The Crown of Destiny, and I'm enjoying it so far. There is a whole pro-Richard movement that developed after the man had been much maligned previously, and in particular, by Shakespeare. The book is historical fiction but based upon solid research.

message 4853: by Amber (new)

Amber (peachystateofmind) Teresa,

I've had my eye on that book since it came it at the library. Obviously quite a while now.

I am glad you think highly of it. Now I know I need to make time for it. I thought the whole idea behind the book was interesting.

message 4854: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I am still reading Aztec (for my book club) - it seems this book will never end! And I just started, over the weekend, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox - really enjoying it so far.

message 4855: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Just finished Book of the dead by Patricia Cornwell.
I soooo liked it!!!!!! It got me sooo absorbed that I was constantly thinking about it when I wasn't reading!!!

Now I need to choose my next one....

message 4856: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I'm giving the Sociopath Next Door another go.

message 4858: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I have to choose a new book, but am limited to two english books I bought and all the italians here in the house. And at the same tiem I would like to choose a book that helps me with the Fall challenge! But it seems like there isn't any book that I read the title of here that helps me with it!

message 4859: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Welcome Teresa. I read the Arsonists Guide a couple of months ago and really liked it, though quite a quirky read.

message 4860: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) The Dark Tower Series Book I - The Gunslinger
by Stephen King.

message 4862: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just finished Blindness yesterday and started Everything Is Illuminated: A Novel last night. I may be avoiding East of Eden because I've already put it off for so long.

message 4863: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Justine, what did you think of Blindness?

message 4864: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I've just started Love, Stargirl yesterday. I'm also still reading Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and LOVING it.

Welcome Ragini, all you have to do is look around the threads, you are bound to find something great to read....

message 4867: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Hi Ragini! This is a club where you'll meet people who are pretty obsessive about books. You'll meet people who would die of smoke if their house is burning while trying to save their books. And of course, you'll find plenty of good suggestions on books that you should read. Enjoy and Welcome!

message 4868: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Atishay...let the newbies find out after they are addictive...we can sometimes sound quite disturbive:-)))))

That's an understatement: 'pretty' obsessive. Com'on, we are completely crazyly abosessive!!!! :-)))

By the way, can someone tell me why I might have the feeling that Death in Venice is a famous book?

message 4869: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments :) We ARE a crazy lot. Thanks to TNBBC ! By the way, why is it called The NEXT Best Book Club ? Which one is the first ? Goodreads ?

message 4870: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Lori,
I really enjoyed Blindness. I wasn't too crazy about the ending - I had about five pages left and then it was just bam, bam, bam the end. I thought the story and the writing were both amazing, but it was kind of a shame for everything to build up for so long to have it end to abruptly.

message 4871: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I finished Dragon's Breath the other day, and just picked up Let's Talk Turkey: The Stories Behind America's Favorite Expressions from the library this morning. I'm also a little more than halfway done with The Boleyn Inheritance. This book is moving a bit slow for me -- maybe because one of the narrators is incredibly boring, and because I'm waiting for it to get to the next big part. I'm finding it hard to resist picking up another book to read, along with these two!

Atishay,
I named it The Next Best Book club because everyone is always looking for the NEXT BEST BOOK to read..... haa haa... Im not calling it the second best club... haa haa.. I never thought anyone took it that way!

Interesting....

message 4873: by Laura (last edited Nov 05, 2008 04:43PM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Isn't that funny, that's always what I thought it mean too. I thought maybe "The Best Book Club" was already taken. I like the real meaning better!

message 4874: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I finished MARLEY AND ME and loved it! Sniff, sniff... Really plowing through SAIL by James Patterson, and loving it. And will start EXTREAMLY LOUD & INCREADIBLY CLOSE in the morning.

message 4875: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments I completely agree with you Fiona! This is the place to be!

message 4876: by Connie (new)

Connie | 188 comments In desperate need of some chick-lit, which I generally cannot stand, I picked up Just Breathe last night. It's one of the books I got like new for $1.00 and it turns out it's by a local author (Pacific NW).

message 4877: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments The first impression I got from the name "The next best book club" was the same as Laura. Maybe some club had called themselves "The Best Book Club" before. But thanks Lori for telling us your reason which certainly fits. It's great!

message 4878: by Connie (last edited Nov 05, 2008 09:04PM) (new)

Connie | 188 comments Yeah, thanks Lori. I had the same impression as Atishay. But I was also thinking it could be the next---as in, up and coming---best book club. I was never really quite sure.

message 4879: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Lori, I never read it that way but that makes perfect sense, I love it!!

message 4880: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Lori, I may be the only one who got the name of the group for what it was! But as long as people love the group, it doesn't really matter why they think it's named what it is, right?

message 4881: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments As my ordered copy of extremely liund hasnt arrived yet (grrrrrrrr) I'm starting Ella Minnow Pea: A Novel in Letters

message 4882: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Thats just too funny really. I really didnt see it that way. Just goes to show that almost anything can be taken two ways huh?

As long as you all love it here and like the title, I dont care what you think it means hee hee!

message 4883: by JG (Introverted Reader) (last edited Nov 06, 2008 05:19AM) (new)

JG (Introverted Reader) I just finished A Game of Thrones (which was fantastic, for any of you fantasy-lovers out there) and I'm finally starting on Extremely Loud. I'm about 35 pages in, but I'm already loving little Oskar.

message 4884: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments JG

I've got game of thrones on mywhislist for ages, it was highly recommended. I think it will be part of my chirstmas gifts for myself

message 4885: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) Loving Jane Eyre, much easier to read than Pride and Prejudice....

message 4886: by Olympia (new)

Olympia (oly366) | 7 comments Hello everyone, I'm currently reading Eragon,I have just started it, but so far it seems interesting. Before this I finished The Taking by Dean Koontz. I'm going from one strange world into another, but yet it all seems to make sense. At least to me :). I have to enjoy this week of reading while the schools are closed because next week its back to work.

message 4887: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I always thought of the name of our group as meaning: the next best thing to meeting in a live book club. Hmmm. Interesting how many different ways it has been interpreted vs. the intention.

message 4888: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Hmmmm.....
berry berry eeeeeing-terest-eeeing.

message 4889: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) LOL!

message 4890: by Emily (new)

Emily bnoir I loved that book, Ella Minnow Pea! It's really different from any other book I've read.

message 4891: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I was one of those that thought there was a group called The Best Book Club....
Too literal I guess.

message 4892: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Heather - East of Eden was not my favorite Steinbeck. (I know, I'm weird.) BUT Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. I'm hoping you like it, but just in case you don't, or it's just okay, you might wanna try Travels with Charley: In Search of America, a non-fiction book by him.

But heck, you'll probably like it, like the rest of the world.

Did it take you awhile to get into EL&IC? I have to start that one once I'm finished w/I Capture the Castle.

message 4893: by Cheri Howard (new)

Cheri Howard Travels with Charley is a great book, one of my all-time favorites!

I (like Liz) am reading The Gunslinger, Dark Tower series book 1 — Liz, are you reading this for the SFF book club, too?

message 4894: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Anybody read Death in Venice? It goes so slow and I am not really liking it a lot for the moment.

message 4895: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Jeane, Yes I read it. I thought it was fantastic but the film was even better. It wasn't faster but the filming of it was so lush and beautiful and the acting captured all the nuances that make the book read so slow.

message 4896: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I just finished The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (for class tonight) and started Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I'm in love with True Blood lately, so I thought I'd check out the books.

message 4897: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Ouch, what an eye! Thanks Petra, it might get better then, maybe.
Fiona, I don't have Extremely close and incredible loud. And I practically never stop a book before finishing it. :-)

message 4898: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Just finished Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel
Phew! Glad to be done with it. It was exhausting.
Now on to Those Who Save Us

Feel free to pipe in and make some comments on these. Not sure what this Blum book is going to be about....

message 4899: by Leila (new)

Leila (justsortofreading) I was reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close but I just got my reservation of The Host by Stephenie Meyer from the library (have waited so long) and thus I'm going to pause and read it instead because apparently I need to return it soon (several have reserved it after me).

message 4900: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments Leila-Just a little warning...The Host was good and I really liked it but it was really slow the first 130-150 pages or so...but keep w/ it because it definitely gets better
