Paula | 1098 comments Thanks so much Kim for your view. And I'll be sure and be somewhere private when I finish it!

message 4502: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I hate that too Julie, maybe you can get into it more this weekend. Good luck!

message 4503: by [deleted user] (new)

I really like Heart Shaped Box! Very creepy.

message 4504: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I'm just about to start Secrets of the Jury Room. I like tell-all real life stories.

message 4505: by Jeane (new)

Diane, I'm not sure who the reader for Enzo was but Enzo's voice seemed older and a bit sadder.

Paula, Have you read Marley and Me? I haven't touched it since I spoke to this big macho guy that shared with me that he was on the airplane reading it in tears.

I'm not sure when I'll be ready for that one.

message 4509: by Sera (new)

Sera I just finished Heart-Shaped Box - wow, what a creepy ride - and I loved every minute of it. It's a great debut novel by Joe Hill. I'm looking forward to seeing what else he comes up with, because this story was very unique. It also scared the crap out of me!

My next fiction read is going to be, Not Me, by Michael Levign (sp?) I really don't know much about it, but it's for a book club that I am as the November read.

message 4510: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments I'm still reading THE HOST by Stephanie Meyer. Pretty good...I'm not completely enthralled, but it's good.

message 4511: by Eileen (new)

Eileen (eileencolucci) Carrie, I'd never heard of THE HOST, but I'm adding it to my "to read" list. It's a fascinating premise.

I'm reading "Life of Pi" right now and enjoying it. There are a few gory parts that I've been kimming. But the story is so compelling.

message 4512: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments Hope you like it!

message 4513: by Dorie (last edited Oct 25, 2008 09:21AM) (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments After spending over a week reading it I've finally finished The Whiskey Rebels by David Liss and am now ready to move on to Michael Connelly's The Brass Verdict. I've really been looking forward to this book so I can't wait to dive in.

As for Whiskey Rebels, it was very good historical fiction with some historic figures scattered throughout. (I had to check Wikipedia many times.) I learned a bit about early finance and the first banks of America.

message 4514: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (klonk) I'm in a reading slump, so I'm still reading The Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris.

message 4515: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i just finishesd The 13th Tale....very good story. it truly kept me guessing, i couldn't figure it out early. rare for me, so i liked that. however, i would have liked a little more recollection after all was revealed, but that's just me. great read over all.

not sure what to start next...i have Brideshead Revisited, Now You See Him, and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, all sitting around waiting to be read. maybe i'll end up with something totally different by the end of the weekend though.

message 4516: by Eileen (new)

Eileen (eileencolucci) So glad to hear someone else was late in reading The 13th Tale. It's moved from the shelf to my bedside table, but it's still underneath the book I'm reading now. At least it's getting closer!

message 4517: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Eileen - the year I read the 13th tale, it was my favorite book. You gotta read it. It was meant for readers who love to read, like us freakish GR types.

message 4518: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments laura, great point! i really liked the story within the story, but i did have some queswtions about certain things...thinking of starting a thread under the book discussion section. so glad i read it though!

message 4519: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments I finished The Boy Next Door.

I am now reading American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. I am about 100 pages in and it is good so far.

Maria, 13th Tale was a group read for us a little while back. You should check out the discussions there... perhaps you can add some more insight...???

message 4521: by Mary (new)

Mary I just started Rhett Butlers People by Donald McCaig.

message 4522: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments I started The Friday Night Knitting Club this week. Still reading Galileo's Daughter, but sometimes the nonfiction is not what I am in the mood for, so I thought some fluff would go along well with it.

Glad to hear all of this good stuff about the 13th tale. It's been on my shelf for months now and I still haven't cracked it open. Soon though...

Mary, I picked up Rhett Butler's People at a used book sale recently. Haven't read it yet though. WOuld love to hear your thoughts on it when you are done.

message 4523: by Sera (new)

Sera I have the 13th Tale, too, which I may need to bump up my list.

message 4524: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Jenna.
You will like The Friday Night Knitting Club...a lot of interesting stuff about knitting. A lot of emotion in the story.

message 4525: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments Dorie : If you liked The whiskey Chronicles by Liss, you should read
A Conspiracy of Paper

It was a great read , where you learn a bit about stocks. Great Characters abound!!!

message 4526: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments I loved The Thirteenth Tale also and will check out the discussion board, thanks for sharing! Then I read Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, now I'm reading The Ghost Orchid by Carol Goodman as a suggestion after The 13th Tale, but it's a little strange. I'm too far into it to just stop now though.
Like Maria, I can't decide what to start next! I have Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakthrough, Julie & Julia, Enslaved by Ducks and The Good Good Pig! Thoughts on any of these books?

message 4527: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Scott, thanks for the recommendation. I have Conspiracy of Paper and its sequel Spectacle of Corruption in my TBR pile. I enjoyed his writing and look forward to reading more.

message 4528: by Annie (new)

Annie | 1 comments My favorite books I've read lately are

* FOR THE MAY QUEEN by Kate Evans and
* MIDDLESEX by Jeffrey Eugenedies.

They are very different books but what they have in common is a GREAT voice that just whizzes you through the pages. You feel like you're inside the person's mind, and it's a joy and creepy and hard and wonderful to be there.

I agree with those who said THE ROAD is great--although it's much much darker than what I usually like to read.

Right now I'm reading Alice Sebold's latest novel, which so far isn't as close to as good as her novel THE LOVELY BONES or her memoir.

message 4529: by [deleted user] (new)

I am putting DRACULA aside for the time being. I started A DIRTY JOB, based on all the positive things I've heard about it from you guys.

message 4530: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments wimp .........wassa matta u ??? You couldn't handle the dry epistolic writing ? It was hard to finish, I will give you that.

message 4531: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I just finished The Thirteenth Tale and I loved it.

I am currently reading the Book Thief since I heard some really good things about it.

message 4532: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I finished Like Water for Chocolate and am halfway through Demons Are a Ghoul's Best Friend. I'm planning on starting 4th of July either tonight or tomorrow and that's my last goal book to read by the end of the month. After that, I'll start The Boleyn Inheritance for another book club I belong to.

message 4533: by Ann (new)

Ann | 3 comments Hi I'm new to the group but wanted to say that 13th Tale is great. Read it a long time ago and loved it. Right now AI just finished The Blood of Flowers-very good Ann

message 4534: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Sera - Joe Hill has another book out 20th Century Ghosts. I haven't read it so I can't offer any info.
_______________________________

Carrie and Eileen - After I got passed the fact it wasn't Edward and Bella (from Twilight) and just enjoyed The Host: A Novel for what it was, then I really liked the book. For me, it was a bit slow in the beginning. Once I hit the midpoint, I couldn't put it down!
__________________________________

Eileen - I, as well, am behind. The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel is in my TBR and I recently picked it up in hardcover from Goodwill. Now I just need to get around to reading it!

Hello, everyone! I'm currently reading my way through A Dirty Job: A Novel. Not sure yet what I think of it.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments I'm just finished Frankenstein and now jumping on over to Twilight!

message 4536: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I have been reading Sophie's Choice for about a week, and while I am enjoying it, I need to take a break from it.

I am reading Belong to Me, which is the sequel to Love Walked In. I really like this book so far, even better than the first.

message 4537: by Lori, Super Mod (last edited Oct 26, 2008 09:00AM) (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
I finished Curse of the Tarantula last nite. It was a shorter novel (193pgs) so only took me two days to gulp it down.

Quite a funny, sad, sadly funny campy B-Movie novel about a washed up drunk old actor and his crazy string of bad luck. A hilariously fucked up lead character that I should hate but really liked.....

Only one negative thing to say about it... on page 144 there was a horrible incedent with a bunch of tarantulas.... UGH!!!! You all know my feelings on creepy crawly 8 legged fiends by now.. I was totally grossed out. Sad part was, I knew by the title that there was little chance of me getting through the novel without some kind of spider encounter..... Ewwwww....

It kinda fit the motiff of halloween in a sense too, as the main character used to play a villanous man bitten by a were-spider, but who was constantly thought to be more of a vampire... hee hee...

I am not sure what to pick up next. I want to read something I already own, but cant decide. Which is a weird issue for me. Usually I have a few lined up ready to go.... Ahhhhhh....

message 4538: by [deleted user] (new)

C'mon Scott, cut me some slack...LOL. I'm in a terrible slump. However, I do think A Dirty Job will end it; it's great so far. It's making me laugh out loud.

message 4539: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Seth, I have Of Human Bondage on my shelf waiting to be read. Shoot me an email when you are ready to start it, and I would love to read it along with you!! (If you dont mind, that is!)

I am going to start reading Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Halloween is almost here, and it would be fitting to continue reading novels that fit within that theme...

message 4540: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Wow...I cant keep up here...lol

I just finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and just started The Pact by Jodi Picoult.

someone mentioned The Thirteenth Tale, I also picked that up at Goodwill for $1.00! I havent read it yet.

Someone else mentioned Belong To Me. I actually was going to start Love Walked In, instead of The Pact, but decided to wait until I could pick up Belong To Me.

message 4541: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Oh, Angela! I LOVED both Love Walked In and Belong to Me. Marisa de los Santos is definately one of my favorite authors.

message 4542: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments You can read Love Walked In and then wait a while before reading Belong to Me. There are characters that cross over between the two, but even with a long break you'll be able to pick up.

message 4543: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments Yes Kim, I have read "Marley and Me". Great book. Shortly after reading it my daughter got a yellow lab who could be Marley! LOL We all love him but he's not allowed at my house. LOL

message 4544: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I hope you enjoy "Rhett Butler's People" Mary. I read it a while back and am a huge "Gone With the Wind" fan. I'm one that thinks you can't improve on the original but I did find this book interesting.

message 4545: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I'm going to finish up "The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B." - Sandra Gulland today. It's a novel but based on fact of the early years of Josephine Bonaparte. It's written in diary form and has been very good.

message 4546: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Seth, I might be persuaded to read some Wodehouse as well.... Its a collection of shorter stories, so I can always read one or two....

message 4547: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I know Iki... they are both great books! I read Love Walked In awhile ago and it does not really relate so much to Belong to Me. I have not really seen much about Clare, which surprises and disappoints me a little

message 4548: by Jeane (last edited Oct 26, 2008 02:56PM) (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I am flying through Along came Dylan. It is a kind of Marley and Me but different. Maybe less good but I am enjoying it anyway. The two dogs make me laugh so much, for sure when the author writes what the dogs 'think'.

Along Came Dylan: Two's a Crowd When You've Been Top Dog

message 4549: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments lori, thanks for the tip about the group read for 13th Tale. i'm going to go and check it, see if my thoughts or questions are touched on there.

i forget who was reading The Almost Moon from Alice Sebold (annie maybe?), but i recommend not wasting your time. i tried, but just couldn't finish it. i'm not sure if it's because the topic is so very different from The Lovely Bones, or if i've just never had that deep a loathing for another person, but the book did nothing for me. just my thoughts!

message 4550: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Thanks Angela and Iki....I'll probably read Love Walked In Next then!
