Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments That's so unfair! There are some really great reviews out there without spoilers, and the people who spoil the books ruin the reviews for everyone!

message 4052: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I COMPLETELY AGREE, Logan! And I would love to see it applied in this group as well since some people on my friends list have posted in the SPOILER threads for Dracula and House of Leaves without clicking the "Add to Update Feed" off and I've seen a few things that I wish I hadn't!

I BEG Lori to post something in the Spoilers threads to ask people to turn their Update Feed when they post in those threads.

message 4053: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I agree, Charity. Because of that I usually just skim over the part of my update feed where it says, "So and so posted a comment." I clearly don't like anything spoiled for me in the slightest.

message 4054: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments What does "add to update feed" mean? I have been putting ****SPOILERS*** when I post.

message 4055: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) When you post something in a group, it shows up on people's feeds. (The screen that comes up when you go to HOME) People can see what you posted in a particular thread. In order to keep what you posted from showing up on people's update feed, you have to click the box on your post before you post it to a thread.

I know that sounded kind of confusing. So...

1. Type in your text like normal.
2. BEFORE you submit your post, click the little box at the bottom right of your post that says "Add to my Update Feed"....the green check mark needs to disappear.
3. Then, click post.

Your post will not show up on your friends' update feed.

message 4056: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Oh, I get it! I will do that when I post any spoilers. See, you learn something everyday! lol

message 4057: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 79 comments Charity, I wish they would actually default the "Add to Update Feed" box to unchecked. I try to remember to uncheck it before every post, not just spoilers. I'm just not sure everyone wants an email everytime I make a comment. I hate spoilers too.

message 4058: by Tisha (new)

Tisha Boof, regarding A Tree Grows in Brooklyn: The author did a great job of bringing the family and the times to life. The protagonist, Francie, is great; it's a coming of age story and you slowly follow her through her differences in perception to her lifes situations. It's seamless. Just a great story about an amazing poor family in pre-War Brooklyn.

message 4059: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Also Boof, I found the writing in ATGiB to be very lyrical, a quality I highly value in books.

message 4060: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I also wish it would default to not being automatically checked...

I cannot wait to read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn... I bought this book a couple of weeks ago.

message 4061: by Shary (new)

Shary (sharyfg) | 104 comments Finished Invisible Monsters last night and started Frankenstein. I was going to start House of Leaves but a friend mentioned that Danielewski makes Mary Shelley and Frankenstein references.

message 4062: by Sera (new)

Sera You can set your profile to default to not checking the Add to My Update Feed Box. That's how I have mine set up so never sees my posts unless I check the box. I also check the spoiler box on my book reviews.

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Charity, I am a huge cause of that then. Because, shame on me, I didnt even realise that would stop it from updating your home page. Duh! I will do my best to remember.. SHit. SOmething else for me to watch for.... argh!

I dont really read a post on my home page, i just skim it to see who is being active, if i want to read the post, i just click on the thread itself....

SOrry agian!

message 4064: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Starting Alice at Heart. I wouldn't normally read this but I won it as a book giveaway so I kind of have too. But it looks good. So I am excited.

message 4065: by Caro (new)

Caro (jesuiscoralyne) I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman, so I am currently reading his novels American God and Neverwhere. I'm also really into graphic novels, so I am re-reading The Watchmen. Alan Moore is a twisted writer.

message 4066: by Liz (new)

Liz I've been busy at school (I'm doing a year abroad right now in England) and I've just read England, England by Julian Barnes. Right now I'm working on bits of The Illiad on Ivanov by Anton Chekhov, more specifically the Tom Stoppard translation.

message 4067: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Caroline, Neverwhere was one of our group reads wayyyy back when. When you finish it, check out the group dicussions....

message 4068: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments I cannot believe that "friend" and "give the ending away" can be in the same sentence. LOL. Whenever I recommend a book, the only thing I may do is to tell someone if the language is harsh, or there is quite a bit of violence. Saves me having to listen later that they didn't like the book for the language or violence. But my comments are really very general.

Logan, I feel your pain.

message 4069: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments I am finally starting House of Leaves today...I am excited

message 4070: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am dumb... I put on my "what are you reading" that I am reading YOU SUCK... No, I am reading A DIRTY JOB. I guess I got confused because both are by Christopher Moore, and both are on my TBR shelve.

message 4071: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Ann, how far along are you on A Dirty Job? I had never even paid attention to Christopher Moore before GR, but he has my attention now.

message 4072: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Blood Sucking Fiends came first and then You Suck. I haven't read the first one since I didn't know it was a series. However, you really don't need it to read You Suck, but I guess it's helpful in providing some minor background info.

message 4073: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Your welcome! I like to read the series in order too. If I had known that I would have read Blood Sucking Fiends first, but the version I had of You Suck never mentioned the previous book. I hate when they do that- not mention the previous book.

I also didn't know that about Narnia, because I the version I have has all the stories in one. I believe I read The Magician's Nephew before reading the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Now I have to go home and double check or it's going to nag at me! lol.

message 4074: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am now on page 75 on A DIRTY JOB. It is great! I have found another great author thanks to you all!!

message 4075: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) My version did start with The Magician's Nephew...I feel better now =)

message 4076: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Bed Rest from Sarah Bilston last night...cute story, and very quick read. if you need some "fluff" to get through quickly, i recommend this one!

i'm about to start Sizzle and Burn from Jayne Anne Krentz...but i just discovered it's the 3rd book in a series, and i've never read the other 2. *sigh* guess that means i'll need to add those to my list.....

message 4077: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments My mother-in-law gave me Paula Deen's IT AIN'T ALL ABOUT THE COOKIN'. So I will be fixing something out of this for the fall challenge...Yummy!

message 4078: by Cynthia (last edited Oct 10, 2008 04:08AM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I finished The Gifted Gabaldon Sisters...it was really good. It tells the story of sisters(duh) but really a family over the course of about 2 decades starting in 1966-1987. But in between each chapter and the next 1 or more years may have passed. Each chapter or section is told by one of these 4 sisters. I don't want to say too much about it other than that but I would recommend it for people who like chick lit with a heavy edge, and family stories.

I plan to read Nicholas Sparks' new book The Lucky One next.

message 4079: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments Cynthia- I just finished The Lucky One and I liked it a lot.

I just started The Kite Runner and I am really excited. I hope I like it. I hate when I don't like books that so many people enjoy I feel like I am missing something.

message 4080: by [deleted user] (new)

Started Interview with a Vampire & House of Leaves.

message 4081: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I loved Kite Runner, Ashley, really hope you like it.

message 4082: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Lori,

I wanted to commend your phenomenal book recommendation abilities. I just finished Odd Thomas. Well, first I bought it for my dad--so it's like a gift and I don't have to justify why I bought another book...

I loved it! I really like Dean Koontz (I've read the first in his Frankenstein series and loved that, too). I can't wait to keep on with the series.

Now, I'm reading The Devil and Miss Prym: A Novel of Temptation and audiobook(ing) Shopgirl: A Novella by Steve Martin (the latter which I think you've also recommended.

You liked Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed, right? It sounds like a neat story, but it could either be rally good or a total dud.

message 4083: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Cynthia, Years ago the Kite Runner was recommended to me and it would not have been a book I selected on my own, but the person did a good sales job. I absolutely loved the book and was so glad that someone opened my eyes to it. Khaled Hosseini writes with such passion that you will be hooked for life on his writing.

message 4084: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 48 comments I am reading Briefing for a Descent into Hell by Doris Lessing and it is absolutely amazing. My favorite of her works so far, and I've read several. Wow, what a great read!

message 4085: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Heather - please keep us updated on Pillars. I'm still reading Jonathan Strange, which is an 800 pager but I'm thinking about picking up Pillars when I'm done.

message 4086: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) OMG I loved all the Tolkien stuff, but then descriptions don't bother me. I actually kind of like them. I just need breaks between them.

Pillars was recommended to me by the same person who recommended Guernsey, so I hesitate to go w/my initial reaction that it's not for me (because please tell me it's not all about the building! and i've never read anything from that time period - is it 12th c.?)

message 4087: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I absolutly loved PILLARS and the follow up WORLD WITHOUT END. I read them back to back and hated to see them end!

Dean Koontz has wrote 2 books in the FRANKENSTEIN SERIES. I and every other fan have been waiting for the 3rd installment.

Odd Thomas is another one of my favorites!!

Now I am back to one of my new favorites, A DIRTY JOB. I love Charlie, Sophie, Jane, Lilly, and The Hounds from Hell!!!

message 4088: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Ann, Heather,

Yep, Frankenstein (Prodigal Son and City of Night). The books take place in New Orleans, so supposedly he put the trilogy on hold after Katrina b/c he didn't have the heart (or guts) to unleash the monster on an already ravaged city.

I've only read the first. I was kinda holding off on the second so I could read it closer to when the 3rd came out. I don't wanna forget what's going on. My dad's worried he'll never have the heart to finish, which would be just awful.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Just finished The Ghost Map, which is about London's great cholera epidemic of 1853. Interesting, but with a weird last chapter.

message 4090: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Seth, have you read Lessing's The Golden Notebook? I have it sitting on my to-read stack and am really tempted to dive into it this winter.

message 4091: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Jessica, I noticed you were a presidential geek, lol -- I saw we've read several of the same books and I added a few that you read to my To-Reads list.

I have no idea whether I posted that I can't seem to focus on any particular book right now and have started reading Like Water for Chocolate. I'm going to the library tomorrow and will probably add another book to the list.

message 4092: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I'm just starting "The Diamond of Darkhold" Jeanne DuPrau. It's a YA and the 4th installment of the "City of Ember" series.

message 4093: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments I just started Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. Only about 5 pages in...
I finished The Inheritance of Loss which was rather disappointing.

Heather/Linda - Pillars of the Earth is a great book. It's so long, but worth it. I really enjoyed the book and will pick up World without end at some point.

message 4094: by She'Davia (new)

She'Davia Williams (redsoxocd) Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult

message 4095: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Just finished "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" by Bill Bryson
Going to start Sunset Express by Robert Crais...Elvis Cole Series

message 4096: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Finished Dracula last night and am now onto House of Leaves.

And Melissa, glad I could add to your TBR stack!

message 4097: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Oh Kellie, I love the Elvis Cole series! Sunset Express was one of my favorites.

I finished "Going Postal" by Terry Pratchett which was very good and very funny. I'm now starting "The Whiskey Rebels" by David Liss. A bit of American history sounds great for an autumn read.

message 4098: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Just finished The Lucky One, Nicholas Sparks' newest book and as usual it made me cry...just a great book...LOVED IT.

Next I plan to read The Heretic Queen: A Novel by Michelle Moran.

message 4099: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Well, I finished Obedience today and was extremely underwhelmed. Great premise, poor execution.

And the writing and editing?? Laughable.

Here's a little tidbit:

"Listen," she said. "We've got this class. We're students down in Winchester. You know how it is. We've all got a paper do this week about the Deanna Ward case, and we need to just drive by that trailer to look at it. For inspiration, you know." (pg. 187)

Ugh.

About 3/4 of the way in, when typical suspense books are hitting their climax, I became annoyed, then frustrated, then bored. With a little under 20 pages left to read, I stopped to give myself a pedicure.

message 4100: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Yikes! I hate it when the editing is horrible.
