message 3854: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Anna - How was Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World? I saw this the other day and was intrigued. Then I asked a bookstore acquantence (sp?) who said she was having a difficult time getting into it.

message 3855: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I finished The Lost Constitution last night. Glad I stuck with it. I also started Hidden Power a book about 20th century presidential marriages. I'm also going to see if I can pick up Dracula and House of Leaves from work today, in which case I will start Dracula on my break.

message 3856: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I love Steinbeck's writing and I think he paints a compelling picture and characters.I loved it as much as I remembered, but Cannery Row was much dearer to my heart.

message 3857: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Stephanie - I loved that book, I flew by it, didn't want to put it down. I liked the short story with the King Messenger on it too.

I am reading the Stand now, as it was noted by some friends that I'd remain a literary looser until I finish that. ;o)

message 3858: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Yes, Anna do tell.
How was Dewey? I saw it out on Bookreporter and the cat looked so cute I had to put it on my wish list!!

message 3859: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 79 comments I started The Stand last night, it feels good to be reading King again. I haven't finished Shantaram yet, but I need a break.

message 3860: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments LOL, Shannon. Taking a break from one epic in order to read another. I decided to take a break from Tree of Smoke for a couple days while I read A Clockwork Orange for the 1001 List book club. For how much I love the movie, I can't believe that I haven't read this yet!

message 3861: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 79 comments LOL, Logan! That's what I thought last night when I saw them both lying on my nightstand. King usually reads pretty quickly for me though, so I'm hoping it doesn't take me as long.

message 3862: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Recently finished reading Wuthering Heights, The Joy Luck Club, and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Currently reading A Clockwork Orange and The Tell-Tale Heart and Other Writings. I've read most of the Poe before, but I don't remember if I've read all of the stories and poems. Regardless, Poe NEVER goes out of style and he's a perfect fit for October!

message 3863: by Connie (new)

Connie | 188 comments Just finished The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.
Just started The Town That Forgot How to Breathe.

message 3864: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Connie, I just read THE TOWN THAT FORGOT TO BREATH. Keep with it. It is a little confusing at first, but it was good.

I just finished THE PRESERVATIONIST and it was awesome!! I think I have said it before, I have a new favorite author!!!

Now I am really getting into HOUSE OF LEAVES.

message 3865: by Kim (new)

Kim | 70 comments
I just finished The Book of Lost Things and the Piper's Sons. I did not enjoy them.

I'm now reading such much needed fluff- Love Walked In, and I am really enjoying it. It has made me laugh out loud.

Next on the list, Life of Pi. I have heard so much about it.

Thanks for the great books guys.

Kim

message 3866: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (klonk) Just started on Snabba Cash by Jens Lapidus. It's a Swedish crime fiction novel that has gotten a lot of attention here, and a lot of people ant critiques recommend it.

message 3867: by Annemaria (new)

Annemaria | 8 comments middlesex...I loovee it

message 3868: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Annemaria - Middlesex is one of my favorites! I'm glad to see you're enjoying it.

I'm still reading House of Leaves, but it was really freaking me out and causing scary dreams so I'm down to just reading it during the day and have started Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell for before bed reading.

message 3869: by Stacie (new)

Stacie That is funny Jen. The only book that ever had that effect on me was Helter Skelter. That was not a good book to read at 3am when the rest of the house is sleeping.

message 3870: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Jen, I'm so glad that you sound as freaked out by it as I was. House of Leaves stands out as such a favorite of mine because it just worms its way inside of you and doesn't let go. Stacie, I can totally understand being creeped out by Helter Skelter too.

message 3871: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Exactly! It's not jump-out-at-you scary or horrible-image scary. It just subtly plants seeds.

message 3872: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I'm currently reading Persuasion by Jane Austen, Daughter of Venice by Donna Jo Napoli, and Playing for Pizza (Audio) by John Grisham.

message 3873: by Emma (last edited Oct 04, 2008 04:25PM) (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I'm still reading the same books. I've been too addicted to GR to really make a dent!

message 3874: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Ann, I am really thrilled that you love Maine! He is probably one of the best unknown authors out there. He is a goodreads author too, with a link to his blog... you should check it out... Hes a great guy (I was lucky to have met him back in Feb in NYC.....)

Connie, let me know what you think about The Town That Forgot To Breathe... its a creepy novel, gets better as it goes!!

message 3875: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Stephanie, THe Road is a great novel. We have a discussion for it too, so as you read it, I would love to hear what you think. Perfect for this time of year too!

message 3876: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Lori, I think I am going to email Bill Maher, and recommened THE PRESERVASIONIST and FALLEN. I saw him on THE VIEW the other day and he was saying how Noah and the Ark was very hard to believe (as well as most of the BIBLE). I think if he were to read these books, he would see it in a whole new light....btw...I loved all the rutting...lol

message 3877: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
yeah, it was FULL of Rutting.... hee hee. What a different way of life back then, huh?

He really is an amazing writer. I was impressed with the way he took these characters and made them whole. Gave them a life and soul....

message 3878: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I started Dracula during my break at work at yesterday so now I have three books going, which is something I never do.

message 3879: by Sera (new)

Sera I finished The Mother Dance last night, which was very good. I'm on Chapter 14 in Dracula, which is also a very good read. For my new non-fiction selection, I will be starting This Land is Their Land, which is about the polarization of the have and have nots in this country. It sounds pretty interesting.

message 3880: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Oh, Kim, I love Love Walked in! Did you know she put out a second book where the characters from Love make appearances? Both are some of my favorite books. Love, love, love them! Enjoy!!!

message 3881: by Kellie (last edited Oct 05, 2008 11:31AM) (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I am still reading The Given Day by Dennis Lehane...It's getting really good. Almost can't put it down. Wish I could read all day but my to do list is as long as my arm.

The thing I like about this book is, there is so much history I am learning about regarding the socio-economic atmosphere in the US (specifically Boston) around 1918-1919. Add to that, great character development and some interesting stuff about Babe Ruth during this time and you have yourself a great historical novel.
I'm hoping to find some time to escape to the tree house this afternoon for an hour or so.
We shall see :)

message 3882: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I'm not much of a reader of mysteries, but Dennis Lehane's books are amazing. Well-rounded characters, period detail that is amazingly correct and endings that I (for one) never saw coming. I'm glad you're liking it, Kellie.

I'm back to Tree of Smoke after taking yesterday off for A Clockwork Orange. Tree of Smoke is big and epic, in the sense that Shantaram was epic. I'm loving all the different threads of the story and I can't wait to hear how it all gets tied together. Reading this is definitely making me want to read Jesus' Son: Stories.

message 3883: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) Right now I'm reading "Lucky" by Alice Seabold -- finally. Everyone says it is great, I'm undecided.

I'm also reading a YA vampire story entitled "Uninvited". So far it is typical YA.

message 3884: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I finished reading "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and liked it a lot, especially the character of Lisbeth Salander. I'm always a sucker for damaged characters with a horrible past. I'm looking forward to the next book in the trilogy. I also finished "Death Message" by Mark Billingham, and as usually love this series.

I'm currently reading "Going Postal" by Terry Pratchett, an unexpected read because I found it in the bargain bin. I wanted to read another book but I read a couple pages into this one and of course had to keep going. Pratchett is addictive, and hilarious.

message 3885: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments Just about to start Eat Pray Love. Think I will love it but have seen a few negative reviews.

message 3886: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Still reading the Poe...short stories and poems are perfect to read here and there.

Started The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama this afternoon. I've only managed to read the prologue so far, but it is incredibly good.

message 3887: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I am currently reading Smoke Screen by Sandra Brown. I am liking it so far. She is a great mystery writer.

Next on the list is Dreams of My Father by Barack Obama.

message 3888: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Charity! Where have you been? I'm readng The Audacity of Hope as well, and really like it.

message 3889: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Emma and Charity, I want to read that book too. I have heard great things about it.

message 3890: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Yeah, it's great! I also want to read Dreams of my Father. Tell us what you think about it when your done!

message 3891: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Liz.

message 3892: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i'm about halfway through All Mortal Flesh. it's the october book discussion pick for my local library.

this is the first i've read of this series, not too sure how much i like it. have any of you read other books from Julia Spenser Fleming?

message 3893: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Right now I'm reading Goodreads. I keep finding I am reading Goodreads when I should have my nose stuck in a book. I think this means my addiction has reached unacceptable proportions, but what to do?

message 3894: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments finished heart shaped box... it was soso

ikiwiki

yep it starts to get a bit tiresome in the midle.

what I liked most about it was the main characthers jude ans georgia/marybeth. loved the fact they werent you're typical clean sheved goodies. maybe I have more than a a little of damaged goth on me.
I think i'll try 20cent ghosts

message 3895: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Yahoo, chapter 16 of Moby Dick...

Just starting The 42 Parallel by John Dos Passos. Looks interesting.

message 3896: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments I'm reading House of Leaves. I'm audiobooking Odd Thomas.

My short story reads (will be on the list for a while) is The Best of HP Lovecraft.

My next book will be something seriously lighthearted and not at all scary or suspenseful. This is my genre, but I suddenly realized how overwhelmed my scary bone is right now!!!!!

At least it's October--I guess I'm getting ready for Halloween!

message 3897: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Me too Julianne, I am going to look for something fluffy...

message 3898: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Ken, Emma, and Angela:

The Audacity of Hope is sooooooo GREAT!! I had to force myself to get some sleep last night because my brain just DID NOT want to put the book down!! I'm a little surprised it has taken me this long to read it, but the timing just seems right for me now. He is very brilliant and articulate! What a breath of fresh air!!

I'm getting ready to start the chapter titled Values, which I skimmed last night, and it looks fabulous!

message 3899: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) I started Inkdeath last night. I am super excited because Inkspell and Inkheart totally captured me. I should finish listening to The Thirteenth Tale today on my walk. I am enjoying it, but I don't think I would have ever been able to enjoy it if I actually read it!

message 3900: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Kellie, I was on Borders Online yesterday and listened to Dennis Lehane talk about the book and visit the different sites mentioned in the book as he gave snippets about the characters and the happenings, both in history and in the novel. Sounded interesting. Will be interested to hear what you have to say after your "escape" and finishing the book.
