Andrew, the books you just can't put down...I just love those. I finally got a copy of The Road and I think it might be one of those!!!!
Thanks Beth. The Road is on my TBR list.Anyways, I finished Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. It is a book that I just couldn't put down, so I rated it a 4.5. I would recomend it to all of you, even though it is a YA book, it is very good.
Starting The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patrica Highsmith later on! I hope I enjoy it.
Well, right now I'm thinking I might have to read Jane Eyre! Thanks for your reccommendations, Sam, Susanna and Cynthia. I am so sorry that I didn't see your posts!
Jeremy, I really enjoyed Wuthering Heights. And yes the production is a blast!Beth, The Road is definitely "unputdownable."
I went to the library today, even though I told myself I wouldn't go until I finish the other library books I took out. However, I got inspired by the October reads list. So I picked up....The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Dracula by Bram Stoker
and finally...Ahemmm...EMMA...
A Great and Terrible Beauty by none other than LIBBA BRAY
I also have from my last library stack:
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan--> plan on taking this one with me on vacation next week to Vegas
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
and currently reading:
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie--> I'm really enjoying this one because it's a fast and easy read.
HAHAHA...THAT was fast!!!I picked up Rebel's Angels, but had to put it back because it was too much for me to carry back to my office. =/
I'm thinking about taking AGATB with me on vacation too, because I might start Snow Flower early in the week. =)
I just fined The Bell Jar, it started out a little slow but it was a wonderful read!I worked in a psych ward for 4 years and she caught the essence of mental illness perfectly, I could see that she was horribly distraught and crying out for help!
It was scary how much it reminded me of so many of the people I had taken care of and even though it was written 45 years ago its still relavent!
The feelings of persecution and paranoia, and her battle with it all is the exact same thing I saw everday no one could have wrote about mental illness so accurately without having lived it!
LOL...you must because you are really on it!I love your enthusiasm, which makes me want to read the series even more. =)
:), I'm SO happy you're reading it! I cannot wait to hear what you think! At this rate, I might have to add a AGATB discussion to the Book Discussion with Lori's permission...
I finished "Nothing to Lose" by Lee Child. First book of his that has disappointed me. Not because of some controversial statements by the main character (which has upset some of Child's other fans), but simply because the book was boring, and made little sense. Now I'm on to my newly purchased "Death With Interruptions" by José Saramago. It's about the first day of a new year, and people stop dying. The way the author handles dialogue is hard to get used to, but I'm working at it.
Dorie (so jealous, but just purchased it online.. hee hee)
JT what play are you performing in?
I am still reading Odd Hours, but just bought 2 books of poetry by my favorite poet Rod McKuen so I am reading those as well... I never read more than one book at a time, but seeing as how one is a novel and one is poetry, it wont get me all messed up!

Emma, if you like, you can go ahead and start that book discussion.. You worked so long and hard at pushing those books, the least I can let you do is talk non stop about them in a thread all its own :P
I'm going to post in that thread! WoHoo! althought, I have only read rebel angels, oh well. I think I am losing hearing in me left ear. It kind of sucks.
^^ Kazuo Ishiguro! I saw that movie 'The Reamins of the Day' years ago in a hotel room, I was young and didn't understand it and thought it a completely boring movie yet I watched it till the end waiting for something to happen. Strangely, I still think about this movie from time to time so I think it is time for me to read it! Added to my tbr list along with A Pale View of the Hills.I embarked on the Agatha Christie journey a few months ago and didn't stop until I finished all her books. Amazing stories..
I'm reading They Did it with Love now.. so far so good, I can't put it down.
I just finished "Book of Marie"What a FANTASTIC book this was! It was such an ingenious way to take a theme and present it in a different angle than what you would think it would be.
The book theme is racism in the South during 50's and 60's. It is told from the viewpoint of a white man caught up in it all. Add to that a white woman who had the insight to predict it all.
Fascinating!
If any of you have read any books by Terry Kay, would love to read your comments.
He is now one of my new favorites...
Next up, the new Anne Rivers Siddons "Off Season"
Andrew, I actually do enjoy some YA so I'll have to check out Wicked Lovely. One of the books I'm reading now is A Great and Terrible Beauty, a YA novel.
JT, you are so right about The Road! I had to force myself to go to sleep last night and the first thing I did this morning was pick up The Road again. It's so intense and I'm trying to force myself to slow down so I can make the book last!
I finished Belong to Me this week, which was OK -I enjoyed Love Walked In (the prequel) much more. I'm about 2/3 through The Mother Dance, which is excellent, and I'm starting Come Back: A Mother and Daughter's Journey to Hell and Back. I'm hoping that I can squeeze in one more fiction read after this one this month, and then turn to all my "scary" October reads. I'm hoping to get through Dracula, House of Leaves and The Heart-Shaped Box next month :)I loved The Road, and I love Lee Child - but I appreciate the watchout regarding Nothing to Lose. I have plenty of others that I still need to read by him anyway. Thus far, I've only read the first 3 Jack Reacher books.
Fiona, LOL, what an awful image that conjures up. It must be only us and the ozzies that don't use it for ass though. I had a french penfriend in school called Fanny Jamme (so unfortunate for her when she landed in an English school full of over 1000 teenagers, LOL).
Andrew, didn't read The Talented Mr. Ripley, but did see the movie. Have you seen it? Wonder how the two compare since usually one or the other doesn't measure up.
Welcome back JT. Yeah for The Road. I have not been much for Cormac McCarthy before, but that one get a 5 from me.
I"m working on SMOKE SCREEN by SANDRA BROWN
REVENGE OF THE WROUGHT IRON FLAMINGOS by DONNA ANDREWS
listening to on my IPOD
BAD BLOOD by LINDA FAIRSTEIN
springparty,I watched The Remains of the Day when I was younger as well and then recently rewatched it a couple months ago and thought it was just wonderful. I've read the book as well. Hope you enjoy his writings!
Beth, So glad you're enjoying the Road!
Lori, I'm in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Stephen Sondheim. It's hilarious - a musical comedy ancient Roman farce. We close tonight after a 4 weekend run...and yes, I read backstage when I'm not "on!"
Linda--I have not seen the movie, though, I do plan on watching it after I read it. So I will tell you how I think they compare afterwords.
Reading two books that aren't going that well:Alice in wonderland (don't have a good feeling about it but is one of the books I want to read once)
Moby dick
This one is going slow but after starting three times I am determined to finish it this time.
I am reading several books right now, but what has got me really interested is THE TOWN THAT FORGOT TO BREATH by Kenneth J. harvey. It is freaking me out. Lori, I noticed you read this, and I enjoyed your review. I like a good ghost story, and this is really getting to me!
Ann, are you having a strange problem with your breathing as you read it? It was sooo weird for me, with all the water (since its a fishing town) and the strange breathing condition that affects the town (hence the name of the novel) I was totally consious of my breathing as I was reading.... and it is a bit creepy, isnt it??!!
Jeane, I feel for you on Moby Dick. Good luck with that.
Very creepy! And yes, I sit there and try not breathing...Weird. I'm only on page 114, and already strange stuff is going on! Freaking me out big time!
Yes, weird. Everyone in this town is weird. Even Joseph and his daughter, and they are only visiting...
I love the old lady and her slow 'son', or was he just a friend? I forget... it was such a strange twisted novel!
I think just a friend. He is the one who paints. I am trying to get her accent right in my head. What a love-bug!
I started The Road by Cormac McCarthy today. I'm really enjoying it. :)I'm still reading Shantaram. I started it earlier this week. I'm only like 75 pages in and I feel like with school and everything else going on in my life it is going to take me forever to read it all!!! I really like it so far though.
I am reading Little Pink slips...And Mean Lean thirteen. Depends which room of the house I am in...Both are good.
Trying to finish up The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen. I started this book about a year ago while on vacation, and it just didn't grab me. I'm nearly 200 pages in and I REFUSE to start over, so I spent about 45 minutes doing a character outline to figure out exactly what's going on. Now I'm ready to jump in and get this one finished so I can move on to something more entertaining (in my opinion).
I just need to know how the book ends and I'm too stubborn to take the time to go back and start over from the beginning. A 45 minute character outline is a lot faster for me than re-reading everything. :-)
Okay, Ann and Lori. Now I have to read The Town that Forgot to Breathe! Also, Lori. I think you read, and really enjoyed, Stephen King's Insomnia? I started it years ago and was bored an maybe got about halfway through. Was talking to my mom about it tonight (who finished it) and it sounded intriguing. It was like we were talking about 2 different books. I think I'm gonna give it another go.
She [my Mom:] also loaned my 2 of the Odd Thomas books, but she couldn't find the very first one. Do I need to start at the very beginning? Whatcha think?
Beth, I know what you mean about The Road. I know I am repeating myself, but this was a book I never would have selected on my own. Thank goodness for book clubs forcing me outside my own box. I found myself getting as intense as the mood of the book when I read it. Couldn't put it down, didn't want to read it quite that fast, but I just couldn't help myself.
Just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and loved it. I just couldn't get over the format and the way it made me feel like I was living the story.Still reading The Shadow of the Wind and really liking it as well. Just started Drowning Ruth and will probably start one more book, but with all the ones I have bought recently I am soooooooooo conflicted on which one to go with. What a nice problem.
