Carrie (lady_carrie) 'The Outcast' by Sadie Jones, its a bit of a hitty-missy type of book.

message 3152: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Melissa, when you finish TOBG, you might want to read the other titles in Gregory's Tudor series, if you haven't already - I'm hooked!

I was drawn to the next on you list by the beautiful cover - the red shoes!

Enjoy!

message 3153: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) I don't enjoy football, but I did enjoy Playing for Pizza, quite different from Grisham's legal thrillers.

message 3154: by Connie (new)

Connie | 188 comments Just finished Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand) and picked up The Plague (Albert Camus).

Linda | 887 comments Rose Ann, I don't know how into books on the Chinese culture you are, but this was my first and I loved it. Took a bit of getting used to, but was well written and so different from anything I had previously thought I would like.

message 3161: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Just finished Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. Will be finishing up Saving Faith by David Baldacci, then moving on to New Moon probably. We'll see what really pulls me this weekend.

message 3162: by [deleted user] (new)

Cynthia: Sorry for your loss.

message 3163: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Seth, that's refreshing to hear. I've always avoided Rebecca, despite all of its acclaim, because I had been told it was the first "romance" novel.

message 3164: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I just finished "The Good Thief" by Hannah Tinti. I enjoyed it a lot and gave it 4 stars. There are great characters that you come to really care about. I hope the author is planning a sequel. I'm now onto "Hell Hole" by Chris Grabenstein, which I picked up from the library today. It's always nice to pick up a new book in a series you already know and like. It's the literary equivalent of a sure thing.

message 3165: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I am almost done with Special Delivery and will concentrate more on New Moon and start Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub for the Stephen King group.I haven' read that one yet so am excited.

message 3166: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Finished Blindness yesterday. So okay, I bow to all the people who said it was fabulous. Won't say more now because I am still letting it sink in.

So now that I am down to one book, will start Marley & Me today and begin Cider House and An Arsonist's Guide tomorrow.

message 3167: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 157 comments I'm starting 8 Sandpiper Way by Debbie Macomber. That is if I can pull myself away from GR. Can we say addicted???????????/ LOL.

message 3168: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Okay, I just finished Slaughterhouse 5. It was okay, not as good as I expected.

Starting Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata!

message 3169: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I am finishing up Driving Sideways by Jess Riley. It is for my book club here at home (which was last night). I always finish the book before book club, but the library took a long time getting the book. So far it is a pretty good book.

I am going to read Rebel Angels by Libba Bray next.

message 3170: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments You finished A Great and Terrible Beauty? What did you think?

message 3171: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Linda, I absolutely loved Marley & Me - I hope you like it.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I finished Great Expectations over th weekend and loved it.

I am now reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist for my book group that I go to. I'm 50 pages in and really enjoying it so far. Has anyone else read this?

Logan, crazy zombies dreams as in you were the hero and killin em all, or as in you were being attacked by them and losing? I wish I could have crazy zombie dreams!

Connie, Hi!!! I havent seen you round these parts in ages! How the heck are you??? I am curious to hear what you think of Plague by Camus, I read the Stranger and quite liked it, but not enough to pick up another by him. Perhaps you can change my mind?!

ANdrew. I had the same reaction to Slaughterhouse 5 when I read it. I just said "eh" and place it on my shelf. No harm done really.

Boof, you give me hopes of liking Dickens when I pick him up next month. I am planning on tackling Tale of Two Cities, and I know Kellie just finished it as well!

Linda and JT... Hurray for Blindness! Thats all i gotta say. Linda, since you are finished, perhaps you will post in the book thread? I would love to hear what you thought. (unless, since I havent checked here all weekend, you already did, and I will find out soon enough!)

Phew.... Being gone a whole weekend is taxing! Work is draining enough, but then coming back to all these missed threads is hard work too ~~hahaha

I am currently reading Oscar Wao... and tho I am only 55 pages in I can tell this is going to be book I will be glad to have read!

message 3174: by Sera (new)

Sera I finished Blindness, and although I enjoyed it very much, it didn't hit me as hard as it did many of you. Don't get me wrong - it's still a great read!

I'm starting Belong to Me, the sequel to Love Walked In tonight.

message 3175: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Mandy, so far so good. Have to admit, it has made me smile at times.

That being said, this is a dangerous read for me because my husband has been on this Chinese water torture mission of one dropped comment about getting a dog at a time. He did admit that this was probably not the book to read for someone who is opposed to getting another dog until "the one who really wants one" is home to tend to the care and feeding of the pooch. Besides that, my definition of a dog (small and cuddly) and his definition of a dog (big enough to look you in the eye on its hind legs) has yet to be resolved.

message 3176: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I've just finished Saving Faith, after working on it for several months (I've been easily distracted by giving birth and many other books). Am trying to decide whether to start New Moon or quickly read Elements of Style.

message 3177: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments So I finished Blindness Friday...and then read the Chelsea Handler book on Saturday...going to start The Cider House Rules today @ lunch.

message 3178: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I finished Oscar Wao last night (fantastic book) and am diving into Dexter in the Dark this morning. So far I'm a little uncertain about it. I don't think I want to know where Dexter's Dark Passenger came from, the mystery of it was better. Still, any Dexter is good Dexter.

Jaime, how'd you like the Chelsea book? Doesn't it make you want to see a nugget go scuba diving?

what did you think of ATLAS ? my friend is an ayn rand maniac. i struggled, shrugged through it and was impressed at how clearly she writes. many writers go round and round trying to make a point and confuse the reader. she does no such thing. her writing is beautifully composed and understandable. the one big problem i had was her repetition. she goes over and over the same ground for pages and pages. current economists say that her theories wouldn t work today but what do they know ? there are no economic theories which will fit the modern global economy. the world has to make the mistakes and learn from them. i hope these mistakes don t make me destitute.

message 3180: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I've had a long relationship with Ayn Rand's writings and have experienced some heady heights and some depressing lows. She really spoke to me when I was in High School- I think this was because I could really relate to John Galt, Reardan and Daphne because they just wanted to go their own way and do their own thing but were constantly forced into cooperation with the looters and moochers. I felt the same way about group work in High School.

However, I tend to think that Rand's philosophy of Objectivism leaves no room for altruistic behaviors. It is very much about the pursuit of self-interest above all things and I just don't know if that is a good way to view the world. There are such things as compassion and empathy which I think are vital to the human experience.

As far as Objectivist Economics, I think that in theory they are ideal. Corporations should be forced to grow and evolve based upon their own merits, with little influence from government intervention. The way the US' economy works now is more of a corporate socialism than a capitalist economy, and this is obviously failing. Government should only step in to economic affairs to encourage innovation and competition. For example, rather than continuing to bend over for US automakers and oil companies, the government should encourage investment in green technologies. If automakers want to continue to make money then they would be forced to adapt rather than lobbying gov't to avoid acting. Subsidies are a decent idea as long as they are used as a temporary measure and don't become the crutch that supports the entire staggering industry, such as what has happened with the Farm Bill and corn.

Yeah, that may make little/no sense. I am in no way an economist.

message 3181: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments Logan, The Chelsea book was wicked funny. Some of the things that she comes up w/ are crazy...Its like when someone says something and your thinging "Did she really just say that?" but @ the same time you just cant stop laughing...and imagining some of the things she is saying just makes you laugh even more...

Did you read her first book?

message 3182: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I finished Book of Lost Things and will be reading Cider House Rules next.

I loved both Snowflower and the Secret Fan and Peony in Love.Excellent books.

Melissa, how did you like Balzac and the Little Chinese Mistress?I've had that on my TR shelf for a while now.

Seth, loved reading your comments on Rebecca and will be adding it to my wishlist.

message 3183: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Jaime, I finally got around to her first one a couple of weeks ago. It's definitely as hilarious as Are you there, Vodka? was. There's one scene involving her trying to crawl through a window in a green M&M costume that just had me in tears.

message 3184: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments Boof...I read the Reluctant Fundamentalist about a month ago. Very interesting story...I would love to know what you thought about it when you finish.

message 3185: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) I'm really getting into Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult. It took a bit to really get into it, but I'm totally engrossed at this point.

message 3186: by Lil (new)

Lil | 9 comments I'm reading Book of Lost Things. I'm up to page 75 but I'm not sure about it yet. Should I keep reading?

message 3187: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Lil, I just finished tBoLT this morning and though it was different from my usual reading it was worth it.If you read The Book Thief you may be interested in the way the books are the same and the way they are vastly different.

message 3188: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Emma- I did like A Great and Terrible Beauty. I normally do not read books like this, but I found that I did enjoy it. I especially liked the ending because it was unexpected. I also love Gemma's character because of her wit. I am about 50 pages into the next one and I think I am going to like this a bit one more.

message 3189: by [deleted user] (new)

Lil - YES! Keep reading. It gets better and better as it goes on.

Lori - I'm exactly one day behind you! 55 pages into Oscar Wao and finding Diaz's voice fresh. His writing flies off the page.

message 3192: by Macy (new)

Macy | 155 comments First off - sorry I've been gone so much! With school and work I've been swamped. I haven't even been reading much.

I just finished The Best of Friends last night, which I loved. And I started Rebel Angels this morning on my way to work. Audio again, I liked it for the last one so thought I'd give it ago for the second book, too.

Hey there Macy, I know, back to school, end of summer time is a bitch! So much to do, no time in which to do it all!! Welcome back!

message 3196: by Lil (new)

Lil | 9 comments Sherry and Jeremy - I've taken your advice to keep reading and guess what? I'm hooked!

message 3197: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Yay Lil!I'm glad it's working out for you.

message 3198: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Paranormal, Urban Fantasy book called Blood Ties by Jennifer Armintrout. It's about a doctor that gets attacked in the morgue and turned into a vampire and how she's adjusting. I'm enjoying it and am on last book in the series. If you like that type of vampires in the real world but nobody knows they exist kind of book, you'll like this one!

message 3199: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments So, I'm at the beach and I just finished 2 books in 2 days. The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox-okay, not as great as I thought it would be, but a good read, and The Art of Racing in the Rain. This one I LOVED! Such a great story. I wouldn't classify myself as a race fan, but I'm definitely a dog lover, and I learned a lot about racing. I learned a lot about life, too.

So I finished Oscar Wao yesterday (its was ok, not as great as I had been expecting)
and started Wuthering Hieghts. I figured, it seems most everyone has read this book, and it was high time for me to see what is so great about Heathcliff....

Only a few pages in. Giggled when the narrator was attacked by the dogs, but other than that, not sure how I like it yet.

I am hearing an english accent in my head due to the writing style... always makes for an interesting read.
