Linda | 887 comments Three books down (The Lace Reader, The Black Cross and All The Pretty Girls) and can easily recommend all. Reading Say Goodbye - Lisa Gardner, and the everpopular Blindness. So far, I am not grooving on Blindness as much as the rest of your, but find some interesting parallels with all of the books I have recently read on the Holocaust.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Linda, I didn't even know there was a movie. I really liked the book too.

Angela | 1934 comments I am reading A Great Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. Just started it this morning and it is good so far.

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments YAY! How far are you?

message 3055: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I am on Chapter 12 page 124... thanks for the recommendation! I have Rebel Angels sitting here to read next. Which one was your favorite?

message 3056: by Emma (last edited Sep 01, 2008 09:54AM) (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments The Sweet Far Thing. Libba makes every one of her books better and better! They always lived up to my excitement.

message 3057: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I read on one of your posts that you would like to know what happened to Gemma. Does The Sweet Far Thing raise many questions after you are finished?

message 3058: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments It certainly tied a lot of loose ends, but Libba leaves the rest of Gemma's life up to the readers. I really appreciate that. I do a roleplay on my group Libba Bray Lovers, and it's definitely helping me decide what happened to her. I love it, because it's not as if the author gets to choose EVERYTHING.

message 3059: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Well I guess I will have to keep reading and check out your group once I am done!

message 3060: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I have a couple of days before my copy of Oscar Wao shows up so I figure that now is as good a time as any to knock off one of the shorter 1001 books. I'm starting John le Carre's The Spy Who Came In From The Cold today. I'm excited, I love le Carre's works but have only read his recent books none of his old Cold War spy thrillers. I have seen the film, which starred Richard Burton, so have an idea of what to expect, but am still very excited.

message 3061: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments :) I hope you will!

message 3062: by Sera (new)

Sera I loved The Secret Garden, even though I read it as a teenager.

Allison, I'm finishing up a biography on the Romanov family (I heart bios and memoirs), and then I'm starting Blindess. The movie comes out September 26, and I definitely want to have it read by then. I then intend to read Belong to Me. I want to know the rest of that story, because I didn't really agree with the ending.

message 3063: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Should-be-reading...

message 3064: by Allison (last edited Sep 01, 2008 12:47PM) (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Sera~ That sounds awesome. I've always found the Romanov's story fasinating. What is the book called? I've been wanting to read Blindness too, I hope you like it! :) I hope you enjoy Belong to Me.

message 3065: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Ok, so I had a bit of a reading binge due to the 3 day weekend. I finished The Subtle Knife in about two days and now I'm into book 3- The Amber Spyglass. I'm really enjoying the series now and the suspense is killing me. So I might gulp this one down within a couple of days too.

I'm trying to get one more read in before my vacation, so I think I'm going to do a bookclub read- Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern. Not sure yet.

Too many books, but so little time =/

message 3066: by Sera (new)

Sera Allison, it's called The Flight of the Romanovs. It's actually a more comprehensive and straight-forward account of the entire Romanov family. I've read quite a bit about Nicholas II's family so this book leaves those details out, but I am enjoying it, because it shows how much the Dukes and Duchesses impacted the fall of the monarchy, and then it traces the lives of those who survived the revolution. What's interesting is that it shows the schism that begins to develop between England and Russia during this time, which is a precursor, in my opinion, to why Russia chose to take certain actions in WWII.

I started Blindness today, and I have to say that it is completely gripping. I had to stop about 100 pages in, because I wanted to think about what I had read so far. I went in knowing nothing whatsoever about the book, and I've been very happy about my choice (thank you, TNBBC). I really like the writing style, and the storyline is very unique. I can't wait to see what happens next.

message 3067: by Stacie (new)

Stacie I completed Fathers and Sons today and started Cider House Rules for the group read. I am liking it so far, but am only 11 pages in.

message 3068: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Sera, 100 pages already, one day of reading... Id say you really got sucked in to Blindness. I almost wish I was reading for the first time now, with all of you. I had no one to talk to about it when I read it. It was amazing and horrible and haunting and beautiful all at the same time!

I cant wait to see what the movie is like!

message 3069: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Well, Lori et. al., I have finally succumbed and purchased Blindness after all the talk around here! I actually read the entire first chapter right there in Borders before I even bought it! It just sucks you right in...

Logan, I recently picked up Single & Single by leCarre. It will be my first le Carre novel - that is whenever I can get around to it. It's somewhere in Mt. TBR at the moment.

message 3070: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Hope you like Blindness JT, it's a fantastic book.

message 3071: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) I forgot to mention that I finished Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris today. I'm really glad I stuck with the book. There were a couple times where I was seriously tempted to put it on the shelf and move on, but I'm grateful for seeing it through. Ferris is a truly gifted writer and it will be interesting to see what he comes up with next.

The novel definitely felt like a first novel to me - it could have used a stronger editing hand in my opinion. But Ferris's command of tone shifts was great and the story morphed into one with more gravitas than I originally thought it would.

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
JT... if you liked the first chapter... you are really going to like book as a whole. It really does grab you and refuse to let go.

message 3073: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I'm reading The Lightning Thief for my face to face book club, and I just started Killing Time by Caleb Carr today. My friend Steph loaned me Killing Time about 4 years or so ago, and I'm *finally* getting around to reading it. *sheepish grin* This is why I rarely borrow books from my friends. :)

message 3074: by Stacie (new)

Stacie When my friends loan me books I usually tell them that I probably won't get to it until 2009. They seem to be OK with that! :)

message 3075: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Sera, Wow! That sounds really interesting. Thank you for telling me about it. :) Glad you're enjoying Blindness so far!

message 3076: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Yay! Another Blindness convert. Welcome to the club.

message 3077: by Rose Ann (new)

Rose Ann Jackie...you can do it!
I just finished it (Love, Rosie) and loved it.
Quick, easy, and fluffy!

:)

message 3078: by Isiah (new)

Isiah (volition) Bangkok 8 by John Burdett. First line of the summary states "a Marine sergeant is killed by a methamphetamine-stoked python and a swarm of stoned cobras.", I had to check it out after reading that.

message 3079: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments OK,
Finished "A Tale of Two Cities" last night.
It was actually pretty good. Once you get past the writing style, the story is very interesting.
I used "bookrags" on the internet for chapter summaries to make sure I understood everything I read. For the most part, I did.

Dickens obviously had something to say about the revolution. His characters were very interesting and they represented the climate of the times very well.
The best thing about this book is the build up. The story weaves itself into a "shock and awe" towards the end. I found myself shouting out loud.

I am really looking forward to discussing this book when y'all have finished reading it.
There is a lot to talk about.

On to Death by Darjeeling....What the heck is Darjeeling?

message 3080: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Darjeeling is a town in West Bengal, India. Unless he meant the tea...which would be pretty funny.

message 3081: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Thanks for the encouragement, Rose Ann! I have to see if the library has it so I can pick it up this week.

message 3082: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Boof, I think it was a Lifetime production.

message 3083: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Just started Shadow of the Wind this morning. Wasn't sure I was going to like it, but after a few pages, I am hooked. Nice cross between humor and mystery.

message 3084: by Sera (new)

Sera Linda, Shadow of the Wind is a great read - I'm so glad to hear that you are enjoying it.

I'm hoping to finish Blindess tonight or tomorrow. It is horrifying! Don't get me wrong - I am loving the story, but I'm not sure that I would be able to watch the movie. We'll see how things go through the second half of the book. I can't wait to read the thread of everyone's thoughts about the book, too.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Sera, so glad you like Blindness - it's such a great book. My bookclub I go to are reading it this month (at my recommendation of course) so I will be interested to see what they think.

Linda, Shadow of the Wind is a great book. Hope you continue to enjoy it.

Does anyone know when the prequel to Shadow of the Wind is out?

message 3086: by Sera (new)

Sera Boof, I would have never heard about Blindness unless I was a member of this club. I am also looking forward to reading the prequel to Shadow of Wind. What a wonderful story.

message 3087: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Sera, I am about halfway through with Blindness. Since I am reading three others and will probably start another, it will probably take a couple of days to finish. I am determined to finish though I wasn't sure how I felt about it. I go through times when I can't believe I have gotten so engrossed in it and times when I am like the little engine that could, I know I can, I know I can. I guess the rollercoaster of emotions means that it must be better than I thought, just need to let it marinate in my thinking a bit more.

As for Shadow of the Wind, I think I am loving it as much for the dark sides of it as I am for taking me back to Barcelona where my husband and I had a fabulous vacation last year.

message 3088: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (powerfm1) | 8 comments I love and hate coming to this group.

Love the great book recommendations.

Hate that I can't read them simultaneously.

message 3089: by [deleted user] (new)

Sharon: I concur. My TBR list keeps growing but i need more time to read!!!!!!

message 3090: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I'm currently reading The Other Boleyn Girl, which I would love to finish before the weekend, but one never knows how the baby will behave during the day.

After TOBG, I will be starting Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. I've had this book on my shelf since around April, so I'm excited to read something shorter and very different from what I normally read.

message 3091: by Sera (new)

Sera Linda, I agree! Reading Blindness is like being on a roller coaster. It flies along sometimes where we have to slow it down to get it's full impact. I would have usually finished a book of this size by now, but I am trying to take my time with it, because there is a lot happening, most of which is also very distrubing to me. What an interesting read.

message 3092: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I'm about half way through City of Bones. It's pretty good. Entertaining.

message 3093: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) Kellie, I had to comment on your reading Tale of Two Cities. I read this in 11th grade English (a hundred years ago...lol) and I remember it being "ok". Now thats high praise for books I usually hated cause I was forced to read them. I've been meaning to reread it, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I thought it was great that you used the "bookrags" (you called it) to help you through. Those are great. I used something similar when I first attempted Moby Dick. They are a huge help! I am totally against them if they are used to "cheat", but to gain a better understanding of an older, difficult read....I think they are great! Just wanted to send kudos your way. I think I have to move Tale of Two Cities to the top of my "to be read" pile.

message 3094: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) Almost done with Special Deliveryand since I can't wait anymore since buying it last week.I am starting New Moon as well.

message 3095: by [deleted user] (new)

On to Timbuktu by Paul Auster having just finished a Grisham. (Playing for Pizza)

message 3096: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments Jeremy- How was Playing for Pizza...I bought it back when it came out but have yet to read it.

message 3097: by [deleted user] (new)

If you like Grisham then you won't be disappointed. Oh yeah, you might need to be a football fan, too. Or skim through those parts. I like football so it worked for me.

message 3098: by Charnelle (new)

Charnelle | 1 comments I am actually reading The Other Boleyn Girl too! its by Phillppa Gregory. But, yes I agree it is quite a good one. Unfortunately, for me it isnt quite moving along fast because I am, at the moment, reading like 7 other books.

message 3099: by Allison (last edited Sep 03, 2008 04:30PM) (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments How are you guys liking The Other Boleyn Girl? I just picked it up yesterday, I hope it's good! :) I hope to get to it after the book club reads this month.

message 3100: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Whenever you finish up with The Other Boleyn Girl, you should all stop by the discussion thread down below. It was one of the first book club reads in this group.
