What are you reading?

I have just finished Jhumpa Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth. It was pretty good, but I liked her earlier short stories better.
I'll be starting "The Art of Racing in the Rain" It looked pretty good and recieved good reviews.
I'm waiting on Blindness from the library, and I have to read "Three Cups of Tea" for my face-to-face book club within 2 weeks.

Right now, I am reading "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards and so far I am enjoying it a lot. It's a bit depressing and sad but it's very interesting.

Now I'm going to start Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. I've heard good things about it, so I'm looking forward to it.

Right now, it's Homage to Catalonia that I've got my grubby little hands on and I have to say, I am never less than awed by Orwell's consistently wonderful writing.

I am very interested in picking up The New York Trilogy. Looks good.

House of Leaves
by Mark Z. Danielewski
After all of the great reviews I read I had to get it. So far, so good!

So I'm reading "Leather Maiden" by Joe R. Lansdale, who writes southern noir. Some books of his are really good, but this one is kinda 'meh' so far.
Maybe I'm in a slump?

Logan, I adore Orwell. Have you read any of his essays? Shooting an Elephant is particularly spectacular, but he has several about his boyhood that are also very good. I like Animal Farm as much as the next guy but I think it should be taken as what it is: a children's parable about socialism. Homage to Catalonia is the full color take on fascism while his other works are pretty black and white.

I really love Animal Farm, but I agree wholeheartedly with what you said, Laura. I own the edition illustrated by Ralph Steadman though, so my kids may or may not have nightmares after their initial reading. :-)
I've wanted to read more Orwell for quite a while, and I will...eventually. *sigh* My to-read pile is one heavy SOB.
Oscar Wao was pretty gritty in parts. Definitely some VERY dark waves. However, the wit is so spectacular that I wasn't depressed or anything. The footnotes are some of the grittiest AND most enlightening parts, in my opinion. You should give it a try when you're in the mood.
I've been enjoying Book of Illusions, but I needed something a little less depressing...something that would suck me in and I could fly through. I've read the first two chapters of Hound and the words just jump off the page. The style is magnificent.

I'm almost finished my Romanov family saga, which has been a fascinating read, and then I'm going to start Blindness. I can't wait!

I'm going to read To Kill a Mockingbird now. :) I've never read it and I've heard so many amazing things about it. I'm excited! :)

I even waited a day to start a new one..I was sad it ended.
Now to decide what to read next....too many choices..that's my problem!

Liz~ Thanks! :) I'm glad you liked it too!!
Rose Ann~ Love Rosie sounds so cute. I'll have to check it out. Enjoy the Secret Garden, I love that book!!
Dorie~ Let us know how you like The Good Thief. I read a bit about it, and it sounds very good.
I'm excited to get my copy of Shantaram and to start reading with those of you who have started it! :)

Rose Ann - I almost picked up The Secret Garden yesterday - it's years since I read it but it was such a lovely book.

It is not an easy read, but I am enjoying the story.
The chapter summaries on bookrags have definitely helped me.
After this, I have to read a bookclub book, Death by Darjeeling.

Yeah! Blindness.... Have you ever read anything by Saramago before? That is a great novel to start with. My favorite by him!
