I am currently reading Proof of Heaven. So far, it reads like a thriller!

Just finished reading the new book by Michael Moss called Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us. The book explores the history and practices of the processed food industry. It’s an eye-opening look at just what goes into our food (and why), and how this is contributing to some of our most common and serious health issues, like obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even some types of cancer. I’ve written a full executive summary of the book available here: http://newbooksinbrief.com/2013/04/17...Cheers,
Aaron
The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, which is a biography of Alexander Dumas' father. A very good read, and it just won a Pulitzer.
I just started The Beach by Alex Garland...looks like it is going to be good...had a friend who doesn't like reading as much as I do recommend it to me so I figured it had to have something :)
Susanna wrote: "The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, which is a biography of Alexander Dumas' father. A very good read, and it just won a Pulitzer."This sounds amazing. I just added it to my tbr list. Thanks!
I've started the classic western Riders of the Purple Sage. This was my Dad's favorite genre along with detective noir by Mickey Spillane.
Just started Anna Karenina and am almost halfway through Pretty Good Number One: An American Family Eats Tokyo. I'm really liking both!
Finished the audio of Monday Mourning by Kathy Reichs (performed by Michelle Pawk) – 3***Reichs knows how to write a good thriller, but I think I’ve reached my limit in this series (this is #8). I’m tired of Dr Brennan going into dangerous situations without due caution, and Reichs having her rescued by some strong man – again.

Finished reading The Last King of Texas by Rick Riordan – 3***
Riordan writes a great mystery series featuring Tres Navarre, PhD, martial arts expert and private Investigator. His scenes are vividly drawn and I like that he includes several strong women among the recurring characters

finished L.A. Confidential yesterday, really enjoyed it and thought it was even better than The Black Dahlia. Also read The Mutilation Machination that has been on my Kindle for ages, a really good horror anthology.
James Ellroy is fantastic, Wendy - I love him too. I think American Tabloid is one of the best American novels of the last 30 years.Wendy wrote: "finished L.A. Looking for Alaska. John Green seems to be a favorite these days. My daughter has read all of his books and loves them. I am enjoying it too. Should have picked another of his books to start out with as this one has a lot of smoking in it and I just quit 7 weeks ago!
Claire wrote: "I am still reading The Emperor of All Maladies (about halfway through) and am finding it very interesting. It is a biography of cancer and is written for the lay person."I have heard such good things about it but after a few pages I could not go on. I could not imagine spending 500 pages in a cancer ward. I guess I was already suffering from the medical student syndrome and I was starting to worry about my body! I'd love to hear what you have to say when you are done. I know people rave about it. Maybe I should give it a try again when I don't feel so paranoid.
Started Voyage au centre de la terre (Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde/Journey to the Centre of the Earth) -by- Jules Verne.

I've seen the movie - very good, though a little more romantic than the novel.

I'm such a fan of Jayne Entwistle - she made the series very enjoyable. I could almost see Flavia smiling as she read parts.
After reading some kind of heavy books - not in weight :).
,
and especially
I've lightend up. Start reading some wonderful mystery novels. Right now I'm reading
but also recommend

Yuliya wrote: "It's my favorite book by Maugham - The Painted Veil. I even put one for votes for monthly reading. Very enjable book. Did you see a movie? with Edward Norton? Not bad movie at all."Saw it on TV last night. Wonderfully acted. Edward Norton did a superb job ... really had more sympathy with Walter as a result. Ending was different ... of course ... Kitty got off easier in the movie. Still it was very good.
Finished listening to the audio of Fool Moon by Jim Butcher (performed by James Marsters) – 4****Harry Dresden, wizard and private investigator, goes up against werewolves in this second Dresden Files mystery. The plot is a wild ride, fast-paced and heart-thumping.

Reading "Great Gatsby" for my book club. Have to admit it is not a page-turner and is taking me a while to finish. We will be seeing the movie and then discussing the book. That should be fun!
Read The Commoner by John Burnham Schwartz – 3.5***When Haruko marries the Crown Prince of Japan she becomes the first commoner ever to enter into the Imperial Family. She knows her life will change, but cannot possibly imagine the sacrifices that will be required of her. I was transported by this novel. Do wish he’d spent more time exploring her life-long efforts to come to terms with the consequences of her marriage.

Finished listening to the audio of Still Alice by Lisa Genova (read by the author) – 5***** and a ❤
Beautifully written novel showing the mental decline of a brilliant Harvard psychology professor due to early-onset Alzheimer’s. A very personal read for me as my mother is in end-stage of this terrible disease. This would be a great book-club discussion book.

Finished the audio book of War Horse by Michael Morpurgo (read by John Keating) – 3***A good children’s chapter book about a horse sent to the front in WW I.

Hello! I just finished the 3rd book in The Eden Paradox series: Eden's Revenge. Terrific science fiction! Eden's Revenge
"The Accursed" by Joyce Carol Oates. I'm about 1/2 way through; it's fabulous - I cannot put it down. I usually read between 2-3 books at a time, but this one is holding all my attention.
I recently finished The Bookseller: The First Hugo Marston Novel, first of a new mystery series set in modern Paris. It was very good and I look forward to reading the next in the series. I also read The Haunting of Maddy Clare, which was creepy good.I'm currently reading The Crown by Nancy Bilyeau, which is completing engrossing so far.

It is very dense, but I am enjoying...and wondering what the heck is going on!!!

If you're a crime fiction reader and you haven't read James Lee Burke yet - do so immediately. He's amazing.
Library Thing’s Early Reviewers/Member Giveaway program for Andrei Lankov’s book The Real North Korea: Life and Politics in the Failed Stalinist Utopia.I am halfway through the e-galleys of this scholarly work, and when I get tired of trying to keep track of all the Kims and all the dates, I listen to the audio version of "Escape From Camp 14". I find them both very interesting and very helpful in attempting to understand North Korea.
I'm Reading
by Tami Hoag, #2 in the Oak Knoll series. I read Book #1
a few weeks back and then went in search of #2.
Is anyone else experiencing this glitch ... I click on "new" but it keeps taking me to the same place ... Message # 30023 back on page 601. Even though I've clearly been here since then ... I've even posted several times since then. Could it be because the thread is so very long? Maybe we need a new "what are you reading" thread?
Where do we report this bug?

It's not just this thread or board, and it's been happening since last week. Some threads clear just fine, others don't clear at all, and some do not show that there are "new" posts since your last visit. It's frustrating, to say the least -- especially in those threads like this one, where you click on "new" and it takes you back several pages before the actual new posts. They have to be aware of the issue by now, so I guess all we can do is hope it gets fixed FAST!
6 hours later... And now I'm getting a "security warning" every time I change pages. Do you know how annoying it is to close that stupid box twenty times in about fifteen minutes??
I'm about 2/3rds through Phillipa Gregory 's The Rivers Lady and just about completed John Grishman's YA novel Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer
Heather L wrote: "It's not just this thread or board, and it's been happening since last week. ....6 hours later... It's already somewhat intimidating for a new member to be faced with over 30,000 posts.
Maybe a new thread each year?
Just finished reading the new book by Ramez Naam called The Infinite Resource: The Power of Ideas on a Finite Planet. The book explores our current resource shortages and environmental problems, and argues that the power of innovation is equal to the task of overcoming them--based on the history (and present) of innovation, as well as a theoretical understanding of what drives it. It's a brilliant book, and has gone straight into my top 10 of all time. I've written a full executive summary of the book available here: http://newbooksinbrief.com/2013/04/30...Cheers,
Aaron
BTW I posted the problem to the Good Reads Feedback group, where several other people are complaining of this very glitch. I even posted a link to this specific thread as an example. "Emily" responded: Book Concierge wrote: "Here's an example: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5......"
This example actually sounds like deletions of posts or users is the cause. Our topics are built to handle up to 500 posts, or about 10 pages. After that, the notifications begin to get a little screwy because of the way that the system counts newer posts. Fixing this would require an overhaul of all groups and all comments, which isn't really something we can do right now. I would ask your group moderators to create a new thread, since you're up to 30,000 messages here.
So it seems that the Good Reads team has suggested we need a new thread.

I love this series and can hardly wait until the next one comes. It's the 6th in the series - not sure when it's coming but I'll definitely be ready!
Today I started Must Love Dogs on which the movie of the same name is based. So far it seems the movie really followed the book. Oh, it is one of my favorite ChicFlics.
