I'm reading the Book Thief and cannot put it down, what a great book. Thanks for picking it! I just finished Loving Frank and it was very good, the ending was such a shock.

Next I'll start Blindness.

I didn't understand the hype about Wicked. I could not finish it because I disliked it so much.

message 2802: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelamclaughlin) As the Crow Flies is also a great Jeffrey archer book!

message 2803: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelamclaughlin) We read The Road in one of my groups. I never thought about your angle before. That would have been a great discussion point!

message 2804: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I'm just reading the Book Thief now. I finished The Secret Countess last night

message 2805: by Sera (new)

Sera Allison, if you like Love Walked In when you read it, check out the sequel to that one entitled Belong To Me (it's only available in hardback right now).

message 2806: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Okay, so now it's the next day and I am waiting with anticipation. Did you finish The Lace Reader? What did you think? I am reading four other books, so yesterday was my day for Black Cross - Greg Iles (I really like his fast-paced style). Today is All the Pretty Girls - Ellison. Since I live near Nashville (the setting for this book), I am into this one as well. Friday (yea) back to The Lace Reader. Oh, just for the record, the other one is Say Goodbye - Lisa Gardner.

message 2807: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments JT,

Have to admit, if our Book Club had not selected The Road, don't know if I would have picked it up. Yea for the Book Club. Wow, I think you will be blown away.

message 2808: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Melissa,

People always want to know how I can read more than one book at a time. I think it's easier when they are all so very different. Gets my mind spinning sometimes, but I find it really helps me with keeping other things in my life more organized.

message 2809: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Dorie, I'm so glad that you're liking Confederacy. Ignatius is such a repugnant buffoon that you really can't help but love him. It definitely gave me a fondness for hunting caps.

Mandy, I had completely forgotten all about the head wiggling! I laughed so hard trying to picture (and attempt) it.

I just finished book 2 in David Wellington's Monster series and will likely read book 3, Monster Planet today. These fluff reads always come in threes for me.

message 2810: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Logan - Have you read the vampire ones by David Wellington yet? I read 13 Bullets which was nice and fluffy. I have the other two on my TBR list.

message 2811: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Melanie, not yet. I just stumbled across his website the other day where he has free web versions of all of his books. I was planning on his vampire trilogy next actually. I know there's 13 Bullets and 99 Coffins but which is the third book?

message 2812: by Melanie (new)

Melanie The third is Vampire Zero. How was book 2 of the zombie trilogy? I have only read the first one (Monster Island).

message 2813: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 79 comments Linda,

I love Greg Iles as well. My sister picked his books up first and passed them on to me, he is a quick read, even though the size of his books first intimidated me. I have one or two more on my TBR shelf that I hope to get to soon.

message 2814: by Melanie (last edited Aug 21, 2008 06:45AM) (new)

Melanie Logan, I just checked Amazon and it looks like Vampire Zero hasn't been released yet - comes out in October. Good to know that he has free web versions on his website - I will have to check that out.

message 2815: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Sera, Thanks, I will do that!! I have seen that book around but I didn't realize it's the sequel to Love Walked In. :) Let me know how you like Love Walked In when you're done, I'm curious!! :)

message 2816: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (courtneyclift) Springparty, Just finished MASTER OF THE DELTA. Slow start but ultimately very compelling. I love Cook!

Peace!

Logan, Mandy, Shantaram is about the Indian culture, correct? Is it Hindi, or Dejurati (sp?).

We have many many indian employees where I work, and I get to witness the head wobbling first hand, it was quite jarring the first time I witnessed it. We go up and down for yes and no, they only have one head shake, and its from ear to ear (side to side) like a broken bobble head... (Oh that sounds mean, but Im trying to give you the proper visual)--->No disrespect meant!

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Logan, Melanie, I have 13 bullets and 99 Coffins on my shelf to be read... I bought 99 Coffins first, without realising it was a series. I guess knowing that the third comes out soon, I will leave it at the bottom of my pile now, I hate to read series when they are incomplete.

Logan, how is the Zombie trilogy coming. It sounds interesting, I might look into those too!!

message 2819: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I liked the second one, Monster Nation, far more than the first. I'm a big fan of zombie books/movies that deal with the zombie outbreak from the first responders point of view, so liked that about Monster Nation. I don't like it when authors try to attach reason/rationality to the zombie horde so was dissatisfied with the first book. They're zombies, they don't need a motive for eating your brains.

message 2820: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Yeah, I wouldnt think trying to rationalize it out would be benifitial to the reader. All I am really concerned with when I hear Zombie is ..."oh Shit! Zombies. Run!" hee hee

message 2821: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments That's generally my reaction to all things undead- to be going as fast as possible the other direction.

message 2822: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
But in that baby suit, Logan, you would be safe from attack, at least, until they fed through the first layer of bodies... haa haa

message 2823: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments That's all part of my master zombie escape plan. The babies are misdirection. The zombies will see me being swarmed by babies and go in search of easier prey.

message 2824: by [deleted user] (new)

Melissa, I hope you enjoy The Shining. It's my favorite King novel and one of my favorite reads period.

message 2825: by [deleted user] (new)

Tisha and others,

I may have to squeeze BLINDNESS in September (or try to). You guys are gushing over it.

message 2826: by [deleted user] (new)

Finally finished Blood Meridian last night. I'll post a review later on. I think it was worth it, though I'm still quite confused about it. Any Blood Meridian readers, holla at me. I have questions...lol

I'm back to Book of Lost Things. The Book Thief should be ready at the library in the next couple of days.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Well done Jesse! A gold star for you.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I finished Throne of Jade yesterday evening, and am still reading The Selfish Gene.

Throne of Jade is not quite as good as His Majesty's Dragon, but still fun.

message 2829: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Yeah for Jesse. I cant wait to see what you post about it. I am sure it was worth the struggle once you let it all soak in ....

message 2830: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice Jesse! It's nice to be able to move on.

message 2831: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Okay, I finished Cathrine Called Birdy. It was wierd, not really one of my favorites, but good historical fiction. So I am going to start Soldier X by Don Wulffson. Hopefully it will be good.

message 2832: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Has anyone read anything by Jill Mansell?
If so, what and what did you think?

message 2833: by Cynthia (last edited Aug 21, 2008 07:42PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I finished Literacy and Longing today...it was good chick lit...the main character is a MAJOR bibliophile but it wasn't as great as it could have been and she does something everyone in this group would cringe and feel sick about towards the end (those of you who have read it know what I'm speaking about)but overall it was a good story with a lot of references to books and authors.

Next is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

message 2834: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Lied. I am going to start reading 1984 next.

message 2835: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 157 comments I have started reading Step On A Crack by James Patterson. The other day, I finished Breakfast at Stephanie's.

message 2836: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Hmmm, maybe I should set "The Time Traveler's Wife" aside for "Blindness", which I just picked up at the library tonight ...

message 2837: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Liz, I liked both of those books equally but for different reasons so you're in for a treat either way you decide.

message 2838: by Macy (new)

Macy | 155 comments Well I finished A Great and Terrible Beauty this week. I really liked it, what an interesting story! I listened to it, which is still a new thing for me, but it seemed to work really well with this book. I also just finished Veronika Decides to Die, my third Coelho book. I didn't like it at all. I thought it had a good "moral" but all in all the writing was simple to the point of being tedious.

I picked up a ton of books at the library yesterday, not sure which of those I'll start. I've also started reading Pride and Joy, a book about women who choose not to have kids. (Being one of those myself, I thought it would be an interesting read.)

message 2839: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments YAY! I could never see myself even try to listen to it on audio. Gemma's voice is engraved into my head and will always stay there. (Yes yes, usually, she isn't English in my head, oh well)!

message 2840: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) I just finished the road about five minutes ago. Whew....That is one of the most intense novels I have ever read. So bleak, but incredibly gripping and hopeful amidst the darkness. Wow.

Now deciding what to read next. I'm still in Part One of Anna Karenina. Perhaps I should devote some reading time to forging ahead in that. I'm probably going to pick up the September reads this weekend, so I may get a jump start on that this weekend.

I'm also reading an excellent history of the American musical called Can't Help Singin': The American Musical on Stage and Screen. It's a fascinating, scholarly, and very entertaining and insightful history of the American musical - it's beginnings, songwriters, performers, etc... Absolutely fascinating if you're into theater or film at all.

message 2841: by Sera (new)

Sera I finished Loved Walked In this week. It was very good, and I am looking forward to the sequel Belong to Me.

I'm traveling for work most of this upcoming week so I'll be taking Blindness with me. I can't wait! In the interim, I continue to forge ahead with The Flight of the Romanovs, which is an excellent biography of the Romanov clan from Alexander II to the survivors of the fallen monarchy.

message 2842: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Sera,
By "forge ahead" do you mean that it is a hard read or just kind of textual? I used to be so infatuated with the Romanovs. I took a Russian Civ class in high school and wrote a paper on them. Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts; although, I have already added it to my ginormous TBR pile!

message 2843: by Macy (new)

Macy | 155 comments Emma - It is a book that I'd like to read at some point, but the woman who reads it does a great job. And she's got a great British accent. I'm waiting for the next one to come in to my library - I've gotten so used to listening to it to and from work that I feel lonely now without it!

message 2844: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Haha! :D. I'm happy you like it! :D.

message 2845: by Sera (new)

Sera Stacie, oh no, I meant forge ahead in a positive way. The book is actually very easy to read for non-fiction. I've read many books on Nicholas II and Alexandra, and one on Rasputin, but this book covers the broader Romanov clan, which was comprised of many dukes and duchesses in addition to the emperor and empress. It's actually very interesting, because the author provides a broader perspective of how many of the Romanovs outside of Nicholas II's immediate family contributed to the fall of the monarchy.

If you are still interested in the family, this book provides a great foundation to re-establish a connection with the subject matter, because of its breadth and easy to read style.

message 2846: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 3 comments I'm currently reading the new Stephen King, Duma Key. I'm not much far into the book but it is so far interesting. Sort of scary, though.

message 2847: by Diane (new)

Diane B | 1 comments I'm just finishing Louise Erdrich's 'Plague of the Doves'. Having read all of hers over the years, I think this is my favorite.

I'm new here though I've been reading this particular thread trying to get ideas for new books to read. I rarely buy books anymore as my house is full to the brim. I am finding my library is my friend *smile*. I love owning books, but there just isn't room anymore--and we have lots of shelf space LOL. I put my name on the list for new books, request that they order books from other state libraries, so I have access to any books in a pretty timely manner.

So--now on to what.

Diane

message 2848: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments JT, that theater book sounds perfect for my boyfriend. He was a theater major in college and loves all things Broadway. I'll have to tell him about that one.

message 2849: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Jessica, I'm sure he'd love it! The chapter I'm reading now is all about the great Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musicals of the 1930s. I've never seen it in a bookstore though. I had to order through Amazon.

message 2850: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I'm reading Shantaram and so far am really enjoying it. Only 3 chapters in, but so far so good. I want to go read it, but am too busy on here!
