message 2751: by Jill (new)

Jill I made the mistake of starting The Lace Reader before work this morning. I was so immediately drawn in that I was almost late! Can't wait for my lunch hour!

message 2752: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Kellie,

I'm glad you liked that one too!!! I like your taste in books!!! :D

message 2753: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Jill, that's interesting. Renata recommended The Lace Reader to me in another thread ages ago, and its on my TBR list because it's not out in paperback here until Sept. Now I'm looking forward to getting it.

message 2754: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments I liked the book PS I Love You but I've stayed away from the movie because I heard they changed a lot of things which always bugged me. Maybe I'll check it out at some point.

I'm almost done with another book by Cecilia Ahern There's No Place Like Here. It's different but it's keeping me guessing which I like.

Melanie I liked Embroideries but not quite as much as the two Persepolis books but I liked the idea of women of different generations sharing their stories about sex and relationships.

My sister has offered me her copy of the Lace Reader but I'm holding off on taking it-I've got to make it through my backlog of books before I take on anything new.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Yes, Ken I remember well the Civil War trip up the east coast my mother and I made the summer I turned 13 - we had a delightful week or so up in Amish country (we were going to Gettysburg, naturally). I wonder how much it's changed in 30 years?

message 2756: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Joanie,

Thanks for mentioning There's No Place Like Here. Sounds like a good one. :) I hope you like the movie of P.S. I Love You if you ever do watch it. I loved it, but I saw it before reading the book. I think it makes such a difference on which you like more depending on if you read it or watched it first.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Well, Throne of Jade came this afternoon, and I am well into it and enjoying myself - I needed a break from the Olympics and genetics!

It is a shame to think that such a beautiful area of Pennsylvania is now strip developments.

message 2758: by Sera (new)

Sera Ken, I haven't been to Lancaster in ages, but my family travels there a few times a year, and they said I wouldn't recognize it if I went today. It's been totally commercialized. I agree with you - what a shame!

message 2759: by Kathyjo (new)

Kathyjo Allen | 9 comments I just finished reading Quiver. It was a good one that seemed to go quickly, well, I read it quickly. I am now reading Mirage by Soheir Khashoggi. So far I am enjoying it.

message 2760: by Gail (new)

Gail D.C. | 31 comments I just finished "SHE"

I really enjoyed it. And naturally it is different from the movie. Also not a surprise I liked it better.

message 2761: by Macy (new)

Macy | 155 comments Ken, I really like the Alchemist but neither Witch of Portobello and Veronika Decides to Die don't seem to have the same energy. Some of it could be his writing style, although I'm sure it's better in the original Portuguese.

message 2762: by Liz (new)

Liz (hissheep) Angela, I'm totally with you - tried the book (Atonement) a couple of times. Maybe having seen the movie, I might be able to get past page 50, now that I've seen what the plot is!

message 2763: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (powerfm1) | 8 comments I just started "Off Season" by Anne Rivers Siddons. I needed some light reading and she fits the bill.

message 2764: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Sharon
Is that her new one?
Please let me know how you like it!
I LOVE her!
One of my favorite authors!

Linda | 887 comments Jill

Am reading The Lace Reader and am about half way through it. It is quite different from some of my other current reads and am loving the difference. Did you make it back on time from lunch?

message 2766: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Just finished The Gargoyle...very impressed with Davidson's first book. I really liked it, more than I actually thought I would in fact.

Next a lighter read - Literacy and Longing in LA by Mack and Kaufman

message 2767: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I'm keeping the zombie train running full steam this month. I just started the second book in David Wellington's series, Monster Nation. So far it's a significant improvement upon Monster Island.

I'm also reading Clive Barker's The Great and Secret Show.

message 2768: by springparty (new)

springparty | 9 comments I'm reading The Murmur of Stones (also called The Cloud of Unknowing) by Thomas H. Cook. I love all of his books! Anyone reads his books?

message 2769: by [deleted user] (new)

Today I am finally finishing BLOOD MERIDIAN. *Flourish of trumpets* I'd like to thank all the little people.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) LOL, Jesse. I have the champagne on ice and a fanfare of ticker tape and balloons at the ready.

message 2771: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, Boof. You know what a struggle it's been...lol. When I'm done, I'm going to write something about it. The book just drives me bananas.

message 2772: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments I can't wait to hear your final thoughts on this book, Jesse. You've been battling with it for such a long tie, I'm amazed you stuck it out and finished.

message 2773: by [deleted user] (new)

As crazy as this sounds, I still think it's worth it and the rating will be at least a 3-star. I'll ramble on this later as there is the possibility the ending could completely blow...haha.

message 2774: by Jill (new)

Jill Linda-
Made it back from lunch and (sadly) had commitments last night. Am about halfway through at this point and am not going to bed until I finish it. You're exactly right about it being different from most things that I have read, but it's great!

message 2775: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I just finished Kane and Abel by Jeffery Archer today. It was a fantastic read. Really great story, I would highly recommend it.

I'm now starting on The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.

message 2776: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle I have started Death Angel by Linda Howard, brain food..lol and Cider House Rules. I need to get started on September now, I get distracted too easily!

message 2777: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments So I finally finished Beloved. It took longet then usual because I was working on my school summer reading. So some books are going to take longer to read then normal. But I am starting Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman. So it should be good.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Andrew, what did you think of Beloved? I just bought it today.

message 2779: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Beloved has been on my TBR list for FOREVER. I really need to get around to it at some point.

I finished Secret Life of Bees this morning and really loved it. I can't wait for the movie. I just loved the whole world of the Boatwright sisters that Sue Monk Kidd created. Such a powerful story.

I'll be starting The Road today!!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Ooh, The Road. Let me know how you get on, JT. Fab book.

message 2781: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Ken, that is a very interesting point, there is a thread for the road under the book topic, if you were interested a few of us contributed and had very diverse opinions about the book and its characters.

message 2782: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Will do, Boof!

message 2783: by Sera (new)

Sera Allison, I loved Kane and Abel. Jeffery Archer is a wonderful author. I really should read more of them. Have you read The Prodigal Daughter? Another great Archer read.

message 2784: by Sera (new)

Sera I'm over halfway through Love Walked In, and I am loving it.

message 2785: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Sera, glad you liked it too!! I will have to check out The Prodigal Daughter. Kane and Abel is my first book by Archer, he is very talented! I'm happy to hear you are enjoying Love Walked In~ I have that on my bookshelf, waiting to be read! :)

message 2786: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Boof-I loved it. It was realy good. I would have loved it even more if I liked ghost stories.

JT- I loved Secret Love of Bees. I can't wait to see the movie either! It has a killer cast.

message 2787: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Springparty, I love Thomas H. Cook and have read quite a few of his books. I remember when I read “Cloud of Unknowing” I loved it. I’d be interested to know what you thought of the ending. I have his newest “Master of the Delta” in my TBR stacks now.

I reluctantly gave up on “The Labrador Pact” and removed it from my book list. I don’t feel I can write a review since I didn’t finish reading it. It started to be both depressing and a bit silly at the same time, not a good combination for me. I’ll donate the book to my county library. I’ve started “Confederacy of Dunces” and am enjoying it so far. Ignatius strikes me as a big old mess. Quite a farce.

Ken, I like that insight. I would never have made that connection. And I fear you are right. Homeless have better survival skills than the rest of us. I know who to befriend if the world ever takes a turn for the worst now!

Jesse,,,,, Yey for finally finishing! Im so proud of you! Its tough to struggle with a book as long as you have, but you seem to have taken something of it with you.... so it sounds like it was well worth the hard work!!

message 2789: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am almost finished with BLINDNESS. I don't want it to end!!!! OMG!!! What a book!

message 2790: by She'Davia (new)

She'Davia Williams (redsoxocd) I find myself in the middle of three really good books right now:

The Magus by John Fowles
The Pact by Jodi Picoult
Why Courage Matters by John McCain

And I'm finding it hard to resist the urge not to start the book that I bought yesterday.

message 2791: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (sweetmelissa818) I made a bit of a jump as well. I finished Someone like You by Sarah Dessen and now I'm reading The Shining. Two very completely different books.

message 2792: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I just finished K is for Killer by Sue Grafton. It was OK. Not my favorite series. I have a lot of the alphabet books and I feel the need to read them...

Next up is "Making Your Mind Up" by Jill Mansell.
Pure fluff.
Thought I would take a nice break before I dive into the Tale of Two Cities....

message 2793: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Ann. I am so glad that you are reading and enjoying Blindness. Be sure to check out our thread on it under the Book Discussions group. Even tho we didnt read it as an offical 'Group read", enough of us had read it, and were dying to talk about it.

message 2794: by springparty (new)

springparty | 9 comments Dorie! Actually... I've read the book! I don't know what to pick up next so I thought I'll just read this book again. The ending (if I recall correctly) was shocking, is this the one about the photo found in his wallet? I don't remember exactly but I was definitely surprised at where the book was going. I read this fairly quickly, just wanted to gobble up his book so I didn't read it properly. Besides I'm in a reading rut, need to get my hands on Master of the Delta!!

message 2795: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Andrew, it definitely has a great cast. I actually ended up seeing the preview in the theater before I finished the book and had a hard time not picturing the cast in my mind as I finished the book.

message 2796: by Tisha (new)

Tisha I just finished reading Blindness, a book recommended by many of you in here. What an outstanding read. I can understand why so many of you loved it so much.

I am now starting The Autobiography of Henry VIII with Notes by His Fool. A hefty 950 pager, but I'm excited about it.

message 2797: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Well I'm still going with Shantaram - great so far but not so great that I can't find time to read it!! I tell you, it's made me laugh so many times, oh, hard to explain but there's this whole head wiggling thing going on and what I'm picturing (and trying to do myself) is hilarious!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Ann and Tisha, I'm so exctited that you loved Blindness! It shot right into my top 5 when I read it.

She'Davia, I'm so glad you're loving The Magus - it's my all time favourite.

message 2799: by Shannon (last edited Aug 21, 2008 05:17AM) (new)

Shannon | 79 comments I finally finished Extraordinary Circumstances last night. Good book, interesting to see the events which led to the Worldcom failure and the experiences of a whistleblower.

I started Shantaram last night, needed to get a jump start on that one if I hope to finish it in September. I'm hoping it will leave me time to read Cider House Rules also.

message 2800: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 95 comments I'm currently reading The Tailsman by Stephen King and I have Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.
