Aaron Thibeault (thebookreporter) | 76 comments Just finished reading Jim Baggott's new book called 'Higgs: The Invention and Discovery of the 'God Particle''. The book discusses the recent discovery of the Higgs boson, of course, but it also does an excellent job of explaining the development of the Standard Model of particle physics (which theory is our best explanation of matter and force, and the theory of which the Higgs boson is a part). The book provides just what the general reader needs to understand the discovery of the Higgs boson and what it all means. I've written an executive summary of the book available here:

Cheers,

Lorraine (saanichlori) For another Goodreads Group, I'm reading The Killings At Badger's Drift which is the first novel in the series which was adapted into the English TV series Midsomer Murders. At first I found it veddy, veddy British, but it's easing up a little and I'm starting to enjoy it more.

I liked both the book and the movie. I read it because I wanted to know how the book and movie compared and get the "real" story. Movies tend to put their own twist on the story. Differences between the movie and the book do exist such as the movie toned Scottie's lanaguage vs. in the book and Sid calls Julie and tells her what's going on and I don't recall that being in the movie. Plus, it has been a while since I have seen the movie.

Scott | 257 comments I recently finished The Black Dahlia and yesterday finished Equal Rites.

The last 1/4 of Black Dahlia was excellent and I thought Equal Rites was much better thanThe Color of Magic. I will definitely read more of both series.

Now I'm reading Casino Royale.

message 27742: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCaig by Donald McCaig earlier today. Basically the storyline of the novel is Gone With the Wind from Rhett Butler's point of view and it was a bit of a disappointment really. Gone With the Wind is one of my favourite novels and I found all the characters in RBP, even the major ones of Rhett and Scarlett, are out of character. There is also a lot of errors that contradict the original, characters dying when they lived in GWTW and vice versa, Melanie knowing about Scarlet being in love with her husband, etc. As a standalone historical fiction novel, Rhett Butler's People is okay but as a complement to Gone With the Wind it sucks!

Now I'm about to start The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain by Diane Chamberlain.

message 27743: by Erin (new)

Erin (erinlf) | 15 comments I am reading Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter and really enjoying it. I picked it up after reading a bunch of glowing reviews and have not been disappointed. The book has multiple different storylines, all set in different places and times, and yet it brings them all together cohesively and meaningfully. I think I am going to be sorry when this one is over. Totally enjoyable.
