Gretchen (goodreadscomgretchengoetz) Oh, I see now. I also made an error - it's Jacob not Joseph. Doh! The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet

And: A Monster Calls

Hi Kyle and thank you!

Karen M | 1956 comments Now I'm interrupting my regular reading with Finger Lickin' Fifteen (trying to get caught up with yet another series) which I have trouble putting down. Really needed a good dose of Ms Plum.

Gretchen,
My suggestions would be

Gone With the Wind
The Green Mile
The Pillars of the Earth
The Shadow of the Wind

message 27205: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (goodreadscomgretchengoetz) Nicole,

Thanks for the suggestions. I've read them all except for The Shadow of the Wind which I have now requested from the library. It might be time to revisit Gone With the Wind. World Without End is also a great, epic rollicking read.

Couldn't agree more. There were so many great historical tidbits in the story, that it made it satisfying on that level, but the two main stories were tangential at best and I was disappointed.

message 27207: by Michael (new)

Michael (book_nerd1991) I just finished Endless Love, by far one of the best novels I read all year. I love how authentic the characters were and how the author beautifully told the story of a young man's love for a woman. Highly recommend it to all of you:)

I am about to begin Long Drive Home

The humor in these books helped me get through the death of my Mother. I was able to pick up a book an dread again after picking up this series. Love it!

Did you time that to be able to discuss with the group? It's one of May's group reads :)

message 27216: by Ioana (new)

Ioana I am reading Lost in Shangri-la, an amazing book.

I admit, I am a huge fan of survival stories, strong and determined charcters, WWII episodes and general non-fiction, and this book has a little bit of everything. I can't wait to see how it develops.

message 27217: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I'm reading The Psych Ward Killer (James Wilks Thrillers) by Michael Price . It's ok.

This is the perfect series when you need that "laugh out loud" moment. If you decide to continue the series then I suggest you start with the first book One For The Money and read them in order. Altho, I have to admit, sometimes there is very little charactor development from one book to the next but you would get a better feel for the series with the earlier books.

Hope you decide to continue reading this one.

Welcome, Gretchen. I would recommend

The Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers and/or The Memoirs Of Cleopatra, both by Margaret George, if you like historical fiction.

message 27229: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Am currently reading (among other things) The Sandalwood Tree by Elle Newmark . I started out with a bit of skepticism since I am not necessarily a fan of books taking place in India. Was I wrong. This is really a great read with lots of history the way I like it. You know you are enjoying a book when you set a goal to read for just an hour and you look up and two hours have passed.

message 27230: by Michael (last edited May 25, 2012 08:58PM) (new)

message 27233: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Thibeault (thebookreporter) | 76 comments Just finished reading the blockbuster 'Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking' by Susan Cain. The book explores the psychology of the introvert, and makes the case that introversion has plenty of benefits and advantages--despite the fact that our society has a deeply entrenched bias towards extroversion (which often makes introverts feel like second-class citizens--if not outright defective or diseased). I've written an executive-style summary of the book at newbooksinbrief.wordpress.com

Cheers,
Aaron

Cassie (CassieWinters) I just recently finished The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, which quickly became my favorite read of the year. I am not sure why I didn't read it years ago since the copy I had is the same copy I have had all this time. I am now reading More Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin.

Michael (book_nerd1991) I just finished Faith by Jennifer Haigh , this book was so sloppy with consistency! It was sooooooo slow, I gave up in frustration. Another book that bites the dust:(, I really hope the next book is better.

I am about to begin Never Knowing by Chevy Stevens , I am a huge fan of her first novel, PLEASE don't be disappointing.

message 27249: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished five since my last post. Not all of them were on my original list of 35 although two were and one was on my "next up."

Finished Colorado Dawn Colorado Dawn (A Runaway Brides, #2) by Kaki Warner for a "runaway brides" challenge. Liked it. But if the Cheyenne language in it is actually Cheyenne, that must be one tough language to learn! This one was on my "35" list.

Finished What Happens in London What Happens in London (Bevelstoke #2) by Julia Quinn . Not on my 35 but I needed an audio book to listen to and it was around. Liked it, will be checking out more Julia Quinn.

Finished two Lee Childs. One on my "35" and one not-- Without Fail Without Fail (Jack Reacher, #6) by Lee Child and Nothing to Lose Nothing to Lose (Jack Reacher, #12) by Lee Child . Apparently these have put me back in the mood for Reacher because I'm now reading a third. And these have helped me knock two or three more states off my state challenge.

Finished Beautiful Days Beautiful Days (Bright Young Things, #2) by Anna Godbersen which is book two of the "Bright Young Things" series. This was my "read ahead into my next-up" book because after I read the first I wanted to see what came next. Then I realizes the third book isn't out yet-- DRAT!

Now reading Worth Dying For Worth Dying For (Jack Reacher, #15) by Lee Child (the third Lee Child) and The Ghost and the Dead Deb The Ghost and the Dead Deb (Haunted Bookshop Mystery, #2) by Alice Kimberly which is the second book in this series by the authors of the "coffeehouse" mysteries. Interesting twist happened in the part I read last night- curious to see where it's taken. About to start 11/22/63 11/22/63 by Stephen King.
