You can't go wrong with anything by

No you're not. I couldn't finish it."
I'll take it one further: I couldn't even start it. When I learn a novel is about circuses, I reach for my . . . water pistol. In my experience, hoakiness and sentimentality ensues.

I see some people aren't giving a resounding shout-out for The Elegance of the Hedgehog, which is one of my favorite "small" books with one of my favorite fictional characters ever, the brilliant, witty, homely, cynical, acerbic French concierge at the heart of the story (she is the story). I think it's a question of aesthetics with this book. If you don't enjoy the attention to language and philosophizing, which is very French after all, you might find this book precious. I do enjoy that kind of book if the language is witty and insightful, not just show-offy and meandering and pointless. It's one of those rare books (my favorite kind) that is funny and serious at the same time. Seriously funny. And the ending is deeply sad. To be that close to pure happiness, after a lifetime with none...
If you do like it, you might also enjoy other novels by the publisher, Europa Editions. Our library keeps me stocked in them, which is good because I could never afford to buy the latest novel in translation from Europe otherwise, and 90% of them have been fantastic.

Currently reading: Coming Of Age In Mississippi by Anne Moody.

It's not hoaky, it's more the dark side of traveling shows. I just finished it and I can see where it's not everyone's taste in books but I enjoyed it.

I never think it will be like that because it doesn't look it are great books, but every time he just manages to do it!

My husband and I reall like this series Renee. Glad to see you are also.

Your comment about animal abuse is one I agree with completely. If I had known what the book was about in parts I'm not so sure I would have read it. I still enjoyed the writing but some parts did make me cringe. Animal and human abuse are not things I would deliberately chose to read about but that part wasn't apparent until I had started to read the book.

I recently read Mudbound too. I really like it.

Trina, how is 11/22/63 going? I've been curious about it.
I just finished Twenty Wishes. It was a good, light read. I've now read every single book in my physical TBR stack. Sounds like a trip to the library to me!

Amazing book with a twist!
Glad to see you like these books as much as I do! : )

Loved this book!"
Jeane- I'm just starting this as well. :) Hope you enjoy it, we'll have to chat when we're both done.
Paula- Glad to hear you loved it!! :)

I also loved it. Couldn't get over how much I learned about the sport of horse racing.

I'm reading Maine on my Kindle right now!
