Rachel | 310 comments I love Duma Key.

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 73 comments Thanks for the suggestions Susanna. I'll see what Penguin has to offer :)

message 25953: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments It's a Stephen King novel, a ghost story so, yes, it has horror elements but it also talks a lot about the healing power of art which to me made it even more powerful.

message 25954: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments I think it's one of his more "literary" books. The ghost story is pretty creepy, I think you'll enjoy it.

message 25955: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments I have read Blaze. I like what he tried to do with the story and making it like Of Mice and Men (one of my favorite stories) but something about it kind of falls flat for me. But I read it so long ago, I don't remember what didn't work for me. I do remember it added the phrase, "That's how I roll" to my lexicon though. :)

message 25956: by Scott (new)

Scott | 257 comments Kyle, I just read Duma Key earlier this year and I thought that it was excellent. It is more of a suspense novel than horror. I highly recommend it.

Have you read Blaze by Stephen King yet? I've heard good and bad things about it. I'm not sure if I should read it or not.

Thanks f..."

The art in Duma Key has elements of horror in it. It is used as a technique to bring out the evil and sinister. It is, as always is the case with his books, very well written and great character development. Its definitely not my favorite of his books but it was good. I agree with Scott, its more suspense than real horror.

Karen M | 1956 comments I'm just starting the classic Captain Blood.

message 25959: by Jane (new)

Jane | 221 comments I'm about half way through It's a Dirty Job by Christopher Moore. I don't think I've laughed so hard for a while. The man is totally insane!

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments Back again to Maugham, W. Somerset (I read him like 15 years ago). Now I'm reading The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham and I liked it

Are you also watching True Blood on HBO? If so, what do you think of all the changes from book to show?

One of my favorite C Moore novels!! Loved this one!

I'm reading Touch and Go by Thad Nodine. This one is from Unbridled Books and I really like the way it is written. It's from the perspective of a blind man - who is on a road trip with his sponsors and their foster kids to deliver a hand made coffin to their dying father.

Trust me, it's one to be added to your lists!

Michael (book_nerd1991) I just finished Carry Me Across the Water by Ethan Canin , it was very disappointing. I thought it was going to great, like his previous novels.

I am about to begin Night Falls Like Silk A Novel (Eagle, Kathleen) by Kathleen Eagle

I LOVE Maugham. Re-read The Moon And Sixpence The Moon And Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham and Theatre Theatre by W. Somerset Maugham earlier this year. It had been so long since I'd read Theatre that I'd not realized the Annette Bening film "Being Julia" was based on it, although I'd loved the movie.

message 25968: by Libbie Hawker (new)

Libbie Hawker (L.M. Ironside) (lmironside) | 15 comments I just started A Fire Upon the Deep on Friday. It's great so far! I'm really enjoying the way the author lets the nature of his alien species be revealed to the reader very naturally, without telling it in an obvious, hit-you-over-the-head way. So far it's a great one!

message 25969: by Jodie (last edited Nov 20, 2011 07:13PM) (new)

Jodie | 10 comments I just finished Stasiland by Anna Funder - loved it. The Berlin wall and how it came about and what went on in GDR during the socialist regime is fascinating and Anna Funder has written a journalistic piece that reads like a story.

message 25970: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments I finished The Prince of Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafon yesterday. I LOVED Shadow of the Wind, but this one didn't really do it for me. :/

Now I'm starting Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer and it's good so far! :)

message 25976: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Just started Up Jumps the Devil Up Jumps the Devil (Deborah Knott Mysteries, #4) by Margaret Maron . I have a personal challenge this year called "batting clean-up" where I'm finishing everything I have not yet read of authors I'd already read most of. Margaret Maron is one of them. It's been a while since I read her-- I'd forgotten how much like her!

I think they are planning to make a movie based on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I haven't the book yet, but it is on my Books of Interest list. I hope to read it someday, preferably before the movie comes out.

message 25979: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Swapnil- I hope you enjoy it when you start it! :)

I've been hearing rumblings of it being made into a movie too- should be interesting!

Patricia- I'm with you on reading it before the movie comes out, that was part of why I started it now. Hope you like it when you get to it. :)

This movie looks really good and I have been wanting to read the book. Might go the watch the movie first, read the book a while later route because I don't think I can get it down any time soon. Currently reading both Neuromancer and 11/22/63.

I did finish Harry Potter because my 9y old was listening to CD in my car.... Well... I strongly believed it's the most overrated book has I ever heard... The movies (even I'm always agree what book must be first and books are better) in this case are more then enough and I would happily skipped all these enormously big books to movies only. Sure, if I would read them at 9-12 years old I would probably has a different opinion

message 25986: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Am currently reading One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. I'm probably going to be dragged to the movie in January, so figured I might as well read the book before then.

Happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating this week!

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) About 2/3 through Maybe This Time Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie . The premise doesn't really appeal to me but despite that I can't seem to put it down. I'm remembering that I love Jennifer Crusie and I cannot understand why I let so much time go by between reading her books!
