What are you reading?

Yes, I'm just dipping into it, bit by bit, and I've noticed the resonances there.

I'm reading 'All bones and No Lies' By Anne Fine and 'Lolita' By Vladimir Nabokov. For me Lolita is hard to go through, it just ma..."
Hi Miss Dania,
Welcome to the group!
I'm new, too.
I agree with what you said about "Lolita." That book is disturbing on multiple levels - I guess what interested me was the way in which Nabokov tried to "normalize" the male lead so the reader didn't simply dismiss him as a monster.
It didn't work in my case.
All best,
SR

I'm going to start A Game of Thrones so that I have at least the first one done by the time the series starts.

I've actually never finished Lolita for just this reason... I would find myself constantly setting it aside because I was too icked out.
As for current reads... I had reserved
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie at the library and it just happened to become available in time for this month's group read! Unfortunately, I have been trudging through it... not enjoying it much at all. I decided to give myself an ultimatum: finish it today or abandon it. There are just too many other great books waiting patiently on my shelves!

HI Miss Dania,
I was intrigued by the "pie" book but elected to read the other one "Ghost Trap" because the setting (in Maine) appealed to me. Would you mind sharing a few words about what you aren't enjoying about the "pie" book? I had planned to add it to my "to read" list and I'm curious to know more.
No worries if you can't.
All the best,
SR

I'm also reading Hood as well as The Journal of Hélène Berr and I like all three of these so far.

Oops. My bad. Sorry, Dania!

I'm also reading Cancer Ward, which is great so far. My short story book right now is a reread, Everything That Rises Must Converge. It's one of my favorites. And, last but not least, my current non-fiction book is Necropolis: London and Its Dead. It's good but I've kind of dragged out this reading for too long and I'm ready to move on to something else.

i've started The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and i'm liking it so far. i didn't realize it was this month's group read until today, so that was a happy coincidence!

My first post here, kind of shy.
I finished

I finished The Goodbye Quilt yesterday. I saw it being advertised here on goodreads. It is an easy read and I think any mother and daughter can relate to and enjoy it.
I started The Ghost Trap today.
Hope to see you on the discussion board for Ghost Trap.

I just finished "Lincoln, an illustrated biography" which I very much enjoyed and am starting another NF called "Mindset". Will have to look for the author of this one later. : )
Hope you enjoy it here.

Hi Eden! I don't have any of Maya Angelou's books but she is definitely wonderful. Her poem, Still I Rise, is one of my favorites.

Today I started

These were easily my favorite 2 books that I've read so far this year!!!!
I'm reading Misguided Angel my Melissa de la Cruz.

I did end up finishing the pie book... Looking back, I believe I can spot a few of the major reasons it didn't work for me. I didn't find the narrator particularly engaging... I found her annoying and unbelievable at times, and some of the topics she was most interested in (i.e. chemistry) are not things I am much interested in, so the detail spent on them was a bore (just to me personally).
I also found the mystery itself to be a bit slow to start... it just didn't grab me the way I want mysteries to (and they usually do, even very poorly written ones!). I rarely abandon books, so I did finish it, but I would not particularly recommend it.
I'm sure others feel differently, though... so maybe amble over the the group discussion to get a better idea of whether it would be right for you!

Now I'm starting The Insider which I won through the First Reads giveaways. Looking forward to it.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for this! I appreciate it.
All best,
SR

Let us know how you like it when you're done, Lisa. :) I have had it sitting on my bookshelf for a couple years, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Hope you enjoy it. :)

Andrew Kaufman's stories sound very interesting. I marked his other work, All My Friends Are Superheroes, to read. Thanks for mentioning this author.

Am still continuing Hood and also The Wise Man's Fear

I'm new to the group and this is my first post.
I wanted to introduce myself and say hello.
I'm stuck in the past, I think, because I'm currently reading "The Girl with the Dragon ..."
when it comes to books, it is almost impossible to be stuck in the past. there is just so much good stuff to read and re-read. I have yet to read the millenium trilogy, i started one three times but never got to finish it. I have watched two of the movies though and loved them. I mean to read them someday though.
The great part of goodreads is there is alwasy someone who can talk to you about whatever you are reading.

I loved that one, hope you enjoy it too.
I just finished Hood I liked it. I thought it was a really good version of Robin Hood and a fun read. I'm currently still continuing with The Wise Man's Fear

A Simple Government: Twelve Things We Really Need from Washington and Evil Plans: Having Fun on the Road to World Domination.
Mike Huckabee's A Simple Government brings to light some interesting facts and figures using some helpful illustrations that certainly impressed on me the gravity of the threat to our nation posed by our trade deficit.
Evil Plans is an interesting book that has been serving to help motivate me as I seek to buck the odds and make it as a budding novelist.
I recommend both books.
