Amalie I begun to read Lajja by Tasalima Nasarina I find the part I read so far is pretty sensitive. The novel follows a Hindu family living in Bangladesh in the early 90's Lajja (means shame) is a respond from Nasrin, who is auch a wonderful woman by the way, to anti-Hindu riots which erupted in parts of Bangladesh. The book subtly indicates that communal feelings were on the rise, the Hindu minority of Bangladesh was not fairly treated.

P.S. This was a banned book, I hope it's ok to talk about banned books at The Next Best Book Club. (I'm new to the group)

To those who read The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. I read that novel a few years ago and found it very sad. I was kind of expecting something sad to happen, but the turn of events really surprised me.

I can suggest other novels about knitting, in case anyone is interested.

It is amazing to me how many books he wrote that I'd never even heard of. I finished The Power and the Glory, though I recall liking The End of the Affair better - hopefully it won't take me 5 years to get back to Greene again!

For now, I am on to You Know When the Men Are Gone. So far, I am really impressed with this new author. I hadn't expected to like it as much as I have (I've heard only good things, but the subject matter didn't really grab me) - the writing is great and the stories pack a real emotional punch.

Poison Study, House of Many Ways, Fallen, and now I think either Fairest or Charlie Bone and the Hidden King. I'm not sure if I want boyish adventure or another love story. I've enjoyed all of them so far so I'm hoping to keep up the good reads streak :) .

Ohh! Please let me know how The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest is. I just recently finished The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and loved it. I'm eager to start the second and third, but needed to take a breather and read something short.

Anyways, I'm currently reading One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. I was desperately in need for a new series, and grabbed this. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

message 24295: by Betsy (last edited Feb 27, 2011 07:40AM) (new)

I thought it was a gripping tale, with engaging characters.I liked the strong but diverse woman characters who created lives outside of role boundaries of 1940 America and Europe. The theme of truth and discretion were as relevant then as they are today.
