I also recommend The Professor and The Madman. It was interesting.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell was really good in a magical, meandering, historical way.

Petra I finished The Children's Book and highly recommend it. It's a detailed look at Victorian and Edwardian England from about 1890-1919. The characters and story are well plotted and with the mysteries and secrets surrounding them, the book was captivating. Also, the discussion on this book was superb. Thanks to those who participated.

I'm now reading Ironweed and listening to Around the World in Eighty Days during my commutes. I'm really enjoying the adventures of Phileas Fogg.

message 23311: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I loved Around the World! I love pretty much all Jules Verne.

Hey Rachel - yea, I can tell it may be a sad story - especially since its a child - Im not very far in and this is only the 2nd book of hers that I've read. Once I get into it, I have a feeling I won't be able to put it down.

Gabriella (stardust_126) | 429 comments i am reading high on arrival by mackenzie phillips. i never heard of her until she came out with this memoir. i am liking it so far, it must have been hard for to write about such personal, devastating matters but i appreciate her doing that (although i don't think everyone should come out with a memoir of their lives,it just seems like a lot of people are doing that these days) and sharing her lessons with us. no doubt this is going to be a book with a lot of sad moments in it.

BirdiesBookshelves I just finished It's Kind of a Funny Story and loved it. I would recommend it to anyone! I am just starting Tender Morsels and it is pretty dark so far. I have heard really good things about it though and have high hopes.

Sigh indeed. I finished it Tuesday and was tempted to turn it over and read again. I tried to make myself stop reading so much of it, but I couldn't help but want to know how it ended. I can't wait for more Morton! Now I am onto something light, dependable, and holiday themed, A Fatal Feast Murder, She Wrote A Fatal Feast (Murder She Wrote) by Jessica Fletcher

I read It's Kind of a Funny Story last year and I loved it as well. Glad you enjoyed it. I just finished The Gates by John Connolly and thought it was just okay. I enjoyed it a bit while I was reading it, but once I put it down, I had no real desire to pick it back up. I ended up giving it three stars.

Now I'm going to start Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll since I've never read it and the only film version I can even semi-remember is the one with Johnny Depp. Hopefully I like it.

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) Just finished Inkspell and really ejoyed it. Am looking forward to reading the last one in this trilogy.

Almost half way thru The Moonstone and altho I like this one it just seems to be going over the same facts. Nothing new seems to be really going on. I'm not liking it nearly as well as The Woman in White

Petra! I miss you and Kitty! It's been SO quiet the last couple of days. I am still letting the Children's Book settle in before I make some lingering comments as I read other books. We had a great group discussion and I to appreciate every one's participation :o) BTW, I also want to read Ironweed. How is that book going?

message 23327: by Petra (new)

Petra Tracy wrote: "BTW, I also want to read Ironweed. How is that book going? ..."

Gritty. Very gritty. Life on the streets is brutal and unpleasant and this book makes it real. The writing is beautiful; the subject matter not so much. Add to that hallucinations that the main character, Francis, is having but the reader isn't always aware of and it's gritty.
That's all I can say about it yet.

PS: don't fret. We'll have more book discussions one day soon. It was a great discussion!

I've just received this book. For some reason I expected the book to be physically lighter than it is. It will have to wait a bit as I have some others needing more urgent attention.

message 23331: by Petra (new)

Petra I finished Ironweed last night. A very interesting look at life on the streets, complete with personal guilt and addiction.
To counterbalance the grittiness of Ironweed, I started Practical Demonkeeping. So far, I'm enjoying the quirkiness and subtle humour.

message 23334: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads I finally finished Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women today & posted my review. I might put everything else on hold & curl up with the lovely copy of Little Women, Little Men, & Jo's Boys that my Nana bought me when I was little. That should tide me over until my next BookSwim order comes in & I can start on Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet. I am a huge Monet fan, so this one is highly anticipated.

Madeline | 293 comments Still reading Brideshead Revisited and I've just reached a point where I'm feeling very sympathetic of the characters. I wasn't expecting to actually be drawn into this book. It's the films fault. I felt unsympathetic throughout watching, but the writing brings them into a whole new dimension. It's rather like having a private conversation with someone you really care for but haven't seen in years.

I have finished the Hunger Games series and I really enjoyed the premise and the books. Although the last one was not one of my favorites, the first two were awesome!!!!!!
