I have just been reunited with my copy of
The Children's Book, however I am 3/4 of the way through Peony in Love so I will have to finish that first. I'm anxious to get going though so I can join the discussion in the spoiler thread!

I don't know it is on my to-be-read-list. I was thinking of next year sometime, to try and get to it.

We'll be waiting for you in the Spoilers thread.
I've got Peony In Love on my bookshelf, too. I enjoyed the 2 Lisa See books I've read.

I didn't care for it either. I think I skimmed the last part of it.

I didn't care for that one either.

I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan but really didn't like Peony in Love. The 'starving ghosts' just didn't do it for me. I wonder which one Shanghai Girls is more like (if any)?

message 23256: by Claire (new)

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I finally finished Dracula by Bram Stoker and I REALLY liked it. I thought the last 50-75 pages drug on a bit but overall it was a great novel. Not sure whats up next but I'll see what is calling out to me from my bookshelf.

The movie was really good. I finished Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King. Now I'm trying to finish The Wolfman by Jonathan Maberry.

message 23263: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Mystic River and while I thought it was good, it's not my favorite of the three Lehane novels I've read. Now I'm starting The Gates by John Connolly. I have high hopes for this one as I adored The Book of Lost Things. We'll see if this one is as good as that one.

Alisha, The Gates is not quite as good as The Book of Lost Things, but then again, it's totally different, and absolutely totally enjoyable!

message 23271: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Alex wrote: "Was that Dexter of the Showtime Dexter series, Susanna? My wife likes those books."

Yep, the latest addition to that series. I've only watched the first season of the TV show but I liked what I saw and I've been meaning to watch more. It just seems the books get to me sooner than the show, heh.

message 23272: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Jane, haven't seen the movie, sorry.

Susanna, we watch the show; Kirsten tells me it deviates considerably from the book. The show goes downhill after the first season in my opinion, but it's still okay.

I finished Still Alice by Lisa Genova this morning. It was a powerful read. . . especially if you know someone who's suffered from Alzheimer's! I'd recommend it Laura but keep tissues handy just in case.

I'm going to move on to The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. by Sandra Gulland tonight. A coworker recommended this trilogy to me years ago and I'm finally getting to it.

Lindz (miss_bovary00) I am still reading 'vanity fair'. I feel like I am just finding my feet with the novel. Thackeray's tapestry is defently rich and vibrant.

I absolutely LOVED it! So happy I finally read it. Did you see the movie?

message 23282: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Also: I suggest The Professor and the Madman. I did a compare on us to find books on your to-read list that I could recommend; I haven't read this either, but I'm dying to.

message 23283: by Sasha (new)

Sasha And woops, we were writing at the same time...no, I haven't seen the movie. I'm leery of it because I don't feel like the book will translate all that well to film. Have you seen it?

I've heard good things about that book! And no, I haven't watched it either. I'm scared too but ultimately will probably end up doing so.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell was really good in a magical, meandering, historical way.

message 23294: by Petra (new)

Petra I finished The Children's Book and highly recommend it. It's a detailed look at Victorian and Edwardian England from about 1890-1919. The characters and story are well plotted and with the mysteries and secrets surrounding them, the book was captivating. Also, the discussion on this book was superb. Thanks to those who participated.

I'm now reading Ironweed and listening to Around the World in Eighty Days during my commutes. I'm really enjoying the adventures of Phileas Fogg.

message 23295: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I loved Around the World! I love pretty much all Jules Verne.

Hey Rachel - yea, I can tell it may be a sad story - especially since its a child - Im not very far in and this is only the 2nd book of hers that I've read. Once I get into it, I have a feeling I won't be able to put it down.

Gabriella (stardust_126) | 429 comments i am reading high on arrival by mackenzie phillips. i never heard of her until she came out with this memoir. i am liking it so far, it must have been hard for to write about such personal, devastating matters but i appreciate her doing that (although i don't think everyone should come out with a memoir of their lives,it just seems like a lot of people are doing that these days) and sharing her lessons with us. no doubt this is going to be a book with a lot of sad moments in it.

Sigh indeed. I finished it Tuesday and was tempted to turn it over and read again. I tried to make myself stop reading so much of it, but I couldn't help but want to know how it ended. I can't wait for more Morton! Now I am onto something light, dependable, and holiday themed, A Fatal Feast Murder, She Wrote A Fatal Feast (Murder She Wrote) by Jessica Fletcher
