Jayme (jayme-reads) Ha, I did a double-take on that. That's not how you spell pray :p Clever...

message 23252: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) That title has caused more than one laugh. Especially as I got the other book (Eat, Pray, Love) thinking it was the group read, and then realized I had gotten the wrong one. LOL.

No, it's how you spell prey as in what you chase and eat.
It's a paranormal, shapeshifter book that's playing off of another book's popularity I think.

Actually, I still have books that were sent to me from back in April (hangs head in shame). I am reading them according to request first - then by release date if possible. So Bruno, since it doesnt release until Feb2o11 I decided to push off a bit.

I keep looking at it and wanting to pick it up .... maybe I will cave :)

message 23263: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I finished The Aztecs today (a textbook, but a good one) and started Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, which I've been really looking forward to. It'll be nice to read an actual novel. Feels like it's been a while.

message 23264: by Carol (new)

Carol Alex have you readThe Guns of August?

message 23265: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I have not, Kitty; I'm working my way chronologically through history, and I'm still around 300 years short of WWI. :) Good?

message 23266: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Gotcha, Catie. It's on the list. Might not happen immediately immediately, but it'll happen soon after O&C.

I have just been reunited with my copy of
The Children's Book, however I am 3/4 of the way through Peony in Love so I will have to finish that first. I'm anxious to get going though so I can join the discussion in the spoiler thread!

I don't know it is on my to-be-read-list. I was thinking of next year sometime, to try and get to it.

I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan but really didn't like Peony in Love. The 'starving ghosts' just didn't do it for me. I wonder which one Shanghai Girls is more like (if any)?

message 23272: by Claire (new)

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments I finally finished Dracula by Bram Stoker and I REALLY liked it. I thought the last 50-75 pages drug on a bit but overall it was a great novel. Not sure whats up next but I'll see what is calling out to me from my bookshelf.

message 23279: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Mystic River and while I thought it was good, it's not my favorite of the three Lehane novels I've read. Now I'm starting The Gates by John Connolly. I have high hopes for this one as I adored The Book of Lost Things. We'll see if this one is as good as that one.

Alisha, The Gates is not quite as good as The Book of Lost Things, but then again, it's totally different, and absolutely totally enjoyable!

message 23287: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Alex wrote: "Was that Dexter of the Showtime Dexter series, Susanna? My wife likes those books."

Yep, the latest addition to that series. I've only watched the first season of the TV show but I liked what I saw and I've been meaning to watch more. It just seems the books get to me sooner than the show, heh.

message 23288: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Jane, haven't seen the movie, sorry.

Susanna, we watch the show; Kirsten tells me it deviates considerably from the book. The show goes downhill after the first season in my opinion, but it's still okay.

I finished Still Alice by Lisa Genova this morning. It was a powerful read. . . especially if you know someone who's suffered from Alzheimer's! I'd recommend it Laura but keep tissues handy just in case.

I'm going to move on to The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. by Sandra Gulland tonight. A coworker recommended this trilogy to me years ago and I'm finally getting to it.

message 23298: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Also: I suggest The Professor and the Madman. I did a compare on us to find books on your to-read list that I could recommend; I haven't read this either, but I'm dying to.

message 23299: by Sasha (new)

Sasha And woops, we were writing at the same time...no, I haven't seen the movie. I'm leery of it because I don't feel like the book will translate all that well to film. Have you seen it?

I've heard good things about that book! And no, I haven't watched it either. I'm scared too but ultimately will probably end up doing so.
