I was also disappointed in Sarah's Key and at the time was going through a run of mediocre books.
Even Angel's Game let me down by ending badly after a brilliant start.
But then I read The Girl Who Played with Fire, which was excellent, and Incarceron, which was even better, and now all is right with the world :0)

How was Veronika Decides to Die? I'm debating whether to read it or not.

I liked it. It's a little "deep" in the sense that it tells the story of Veronika who unsuccessfully tries to commit suicide and finds herself in a mental institution. She learns that her attempt at her life irrevocably damaged her heart so she only has a few days to live. This all causes her to reexamine herself and asks questions like "what does it mean to be 'crazy'?, what's the purpose of living?", etc. It only took me one day to read (I have a long commute). Reminds me a little of a modern day Siddhartha. Not sure if you read that.

"Lamb...." is my favorite Christopher Moore book so far. Hope you enjoy it, Scott.

message 23009: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I had a pretty good time with Lamb, Scott. Didn't, like, change my life or anything, but it's...the word "charming" comes to mind.

For all the people suffering through mediocrity, I highly recommend Goodreads Author Batt Humphrey's Dead Weight.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Finished Coriolanus. One of the more difficult of Shakespeare's plays that I've read. Very political, lots of jawbreaker words that didn't catch on.

message 23013: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I never have read that, Susanna. Nor am I super eager to, I have to say.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments It was interesting, and I had an intellectual appreciation for it. But yeah.

message 23018: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Hell House by Richard Matheson and though I thought it was okay, it really couldn't hold a candle to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Now I'm continuing with my semi-horror month and reading Bad Girls Don't Die.

Kristin (kgansor) | 310 comments I finished Still Alice by Lisa Genova on my flight to Florida, and started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson on my way back. I am 60 pages in and so far I am iffy on it. I like it but I am not in love with it yet, but its a long book so I am hoping it'll grow on me.

I'm loving Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. This was one of those mornings that I wish I didn't have to get off the train so I could finish it. Something to look forward to on my way home from work. . .

message 23024: by Sasha (last edited Oct 27, 2010 06:35AM) (new)

Sasha I know that feeling, Patricia. I've been known to ride an extra stop just to keep reading.

I finished The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements last night. Very enjoyable, and I even learned some stuff.

Started Cutting for Stone; I'm a bit nervous about it, because the description frankly doesn't interest me at all, but I'm a fan of Ethiopia so I knew I'd have to read this eventually.

message 23025: by Janny (new)

Janny (jannywurts) | 142 comments I finished The Art of Racing in the Rain. Thank goodness for that ending, which I loved. I also finished Anathem, which was very original and a lot of work. Next up is Little, Big. After that, definitely, I need something fun and light hearted.

tiasreads I just finished Memoirs of a Geisha. It was amazing! I gave it a five stars, something I rarely do. Now I'm reading Firefly Lane. So far so good.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I found it took a little while to get into Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and then I loved it.

Having finished Coriolanus, I'm back to This Body of Death.

"The Poisonwood Bible" was a favorite of mine too, and a few weeks ago, I heard a delightful interview with Barbara Kingsolver on the BBC. I don't know why I expected her to sound schoolmarmish, but she came across as being young and lively and not at all critical or bored or rude and snobbish.

TGWTDT will become a white-knuckle read after awhile. Just be patient. I don't know anyone who hasn't liked it yet. I say that, and I can't seem to find the time to start the 2nd or 3rd in the series.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Those are also very exciting reads.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Finished Bad Girls Don't Die and it was okay. Pretty creepy, but annoying protagonist kept it from being good. Now I'm going to start The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story by Susan Hill. Hmmm. I may be going a little bit overboard on the horror. I'm jumping at regular, run of the mill sounds and am basically a walking jumble of nerves... Oh well, October is almost over so might as well go all the way.

Joel (joelevard) Reading Jane Eyre and The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint; listening to The Invisible Bridge on audio. Enjoying all three, especially the audio book.

message 23046: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far (I'm just over halfway through). It's a lot more readable than some of the other classics I've tackled this year, including Jane Austen, whose syntax gives me a headache.
