Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments I've just finished Incarceron. It was excellent, probably the best book I've read this year. I am itching to get my hands on the sequel.
Meanwhile I have started The Marriage Artist which is an ARC and the e-book of Drummer Boy which was sent me by the author for review. I bumped them to the top of my TBR list in order to get them reviewed in a timely manner.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I just finished Breaking Night: A Memoir by Liz Murray which was a library-thing win. I gave it two stars since I really didn't like it much. Now I'm going to start Naomi's Room. There have been a few people who've said that Naomi's Room was the scariest book they've ever read. I'm hoping this is true because I need something to scare the crap out of me to get in the Halloween mood.

Still working on Dracula by Bram Stoker and am really liking it. Very creepy.

I loved The Shack.

The Forgotten Garden!!! My absolute favorite novel!

message 22955: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I can't decide what to read next. I always keep a book in my purse or in my car to read on the go. So here are a few small paperbacks I have, any suggestions?

The Magicians Assistant
Their Eyes Were Watching God
The House of Sand and Fog (I've read 1/2 of this)
The Pilot's Wife
A Map of the World
Like Water for Chocolate
Revolutionary Road
The Reader
The Hours
The Things They Carried
Before You Know Kindness

I was thinking The Magicians Assitant, I read reviews and seems it's either love it or hate it.

message 22956: by Marti (new)

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments Patricia - The Pilot's Wife would be my choice.

I loved the book The Scent of Rain and Lightening!

I am reading The Other Family... it has slowed down for me a bit 8>(

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Wilde Ride this morning. it was ok, i was hoping for better. i liked the other 2 they wrote together, but this one wasn't as well done as those were for some reason.

not sure i'm starting next, it will either be The Girl Who Played With Fire for my november book group meeting or A Private Hotel for Gentle Ladies.

message 22958: by Mark (new)

Mark Rayner (markarayner) | 49 comments I'm a few chapters into an Italo Calvino book: The Nonexistent Knight and The Cloven Viscount. My reading slows immensely when writing a lot though, and I've just finished the draft of a new novel, so I have no idea when I'll finish. (Probably some afternoon I'll rip right through it -- love Calvino.)

Linda-Very much enjoyed this book on many levels. Really felt like I got to know the Linder family and the town of Rose Kansas. In fact Nancy's "real life" character development made me feel as if I was one of the Linder neighbors, it was that good :o)I also liked the authors description of Testament Rock and the mysterious nature of it's sentiment rock and and the shifting clay earth surrounding it. Also the role the rock area plays into the mystery of the book.

I really also enjoyed Jody's relationship with Collin. The relationship was so healthy despite the tragedies that the both had to endure. Great book from many aspects.

I loved their Eyes Were Watching God, but it was assigned for school, so I see it as "that kind of reading", if you know what I mean.
I do love the Pilot's Wife as well, but my pick would be The Things They Carried. Also a book assigned in High School, but man, did I love it!
I have some of the same titles on my TBR list, so it looks like you have some great options! Good Luck!

The House of Sand and Fog was good but a little depressing. And the main characcter was irritating in her passivity.

I would recommend The Magician's Assistant. It is a quiet gentle book and kind of sad but also hopeful at the end.

message 22965: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Thanks! I'm finishing The Shack tonight so I'm going to read The Pilot's Wife at home and take The Magician's Assistant on the road with me. Someday I will finish The House of Sand and Fog, it's one of my favorite movies.

Rachel | 310 comments I just started Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry.

message 22967: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 185 comments I finished The Women by T.C. Boyle. I thought it was interesting and all the more tragic how Boyle told the story of Frank Lloyd Wright's love affairs backwards - starting from FLW's last love later in life and making his way back in time to FLW's original wife.

In the morning I'll move on to Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho.

message 22968: by Linda (new)

Linda Just started Bury Your Dead by Louise Penney. Love this series about Inspector Gamache! I'm also reading Thereby Hangs a Tail by Spencer Quinn, another good series narrated by a dog named Chet.

Katrina | 65 comments Rereading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3) by J.K. Rowling along with 4,5,6 and 7 to get me all prepared for the movie!

As soon as I am about 1/2 way through with HP3 I am going to start Circus of the Damned (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #3)

Bummer. I'm stuck in the world of mediocre books! Oh well, at least my expectations are in check for this one. I will just have to pick something wonderful for my next read to wash the taste of blah books out of my mouth.

Now you might like it. I should not have said any thing. I am sorry if I spoiled it for you. I read The Bone Peoplewhich I thought was good.

I also read the mammoth The Children's Book if you like history along with Victorian culture leading up to and the end of WWI , you might like it.

message 22976: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) I finished Eat That Frog! 21 Great ways to Stop Procrastinating by Brian Tracy and Murder Uncorked by Michele Scott. Both were OK books.

I'm not sure if the third one is available yet but I'm sure I'll be getting it for my kindle soon if the price isn't too high. I love how Chet sees the world.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished The Summoning and it was pretty good. Not amazing or anything, but not a bad fluff read. Now I'm going to start Hell House. I've never seen the movie and the only thing I know about it is the basic premise, so hopefully it's creepy.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished A Private Hotel for Gentle Ladies from Ellen Cooney tonight. it wasn't bad, but it wasn't that great. it lost some steam near the end, and had one of those pick-your-ending things going on, but it was worthwhile reading.

i'll start The Girl Who Played With Fire tomorrow, and hopefully i'll be able to get to the library to stock back up on my book pile.

Madeline | 293 comments Finished Pirate Latitudes today. It was a crazy amount of somewhat silly but fufilling fun and I read on wiki that they are going to turn it into a movie, not surprised at that. It ought to be a good blockbuster adventure type. Now I'm starting Tam Lin at the recommendation of my sister.

Even Angel's Game let me down by ending badly after a brilliant start.
But then I read The Girl Who Played with Fire, which was excellent, and Incarceron, which was even better, and now all is right with the world :0)

I liked it. It's a little "deep" in the sense that it tells the story of Veronika who unsuccessfully tries to commit suicide and finds herself in a mental institution. She learns that her attempt at her life irrevocably damaged her heart so she only has a few days to live. This all causes her to reexamine herself and asks questions like "what does it mean to be 'crazy'?, what's the purpose of living?", etc. It only took me one day to read (I have a long commute). Reminds me a little of a modern day Siddhartha. Not sure if you read that.

For all the people suffering through mediocrity, I highly recommend Goodreads Author Batt Humphrey's Dead Weight.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Finished Coriolanus. One of the more difficult of Shakespeare's plays that I've read. Very political, lots of jawbreaker words that didn't catch on.
