Petra I just finished Still Alice. What a wonderful book! Touching in so many ways. She was a brave lady and I loved the ending.
In many ways, Alice's struggle with Alzheimer's reminded me a lot of my Mom and her struggle with Cancer. Not the same disease, for sure, but many of the struggles to maintain one's life patterns and one's "self" were the same. I wanted to hug both my Mom and Alice many times throughout the book.

Hi Stephanie, how is the Gemma Doyle stories.. i have my eye on the books at the bookstore yesterday, but wasn't sure if it's worth to buy..

message 22554: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) This evening after dinner I curled up with a Christmas CD (yes, in September!), a cup of mint hot chocolate, and Tim Slover's The Christmas Chronicles: The Legend of Santa Claus. I found myself immediately drawn into Slover's lyrical prose, even reading sections of it aloud. What an amazing and wonderful story! This is definitely one book I will read again.

message 22556: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) I just finished Joe Hill's Horns and have epic love for said book. So, no pressure there for the next book to be awesome, much. :D

I think next I'll start Vikas Swarup's Six Suspects since it's due back in the library in about a week. After that, probably back to re-reading the HP series.

I really enjoyed the first book. It was an easy read so I sailed right through it. I've just started the second book now. I don't regret buying them. I read some reviews complaining the characters were one dimensional but I didn't think so at all. I really liked Gemma and I thought the characters were accurate depictions of sixteen year old girls. If you're into YA fiction I say go for it.

Paula | 1098 comments Kristin, so glad you were enjoying "The Art of Racing in the Rain". I loved that book!

message 22559: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments Erika, glad to see you're enjoying "Garden Spells". I've enjoyed all three of her books, they are light and fun reads I think.

message 22560: by El (new)

El I started Rudyard Kipling's Kim last night. I'm not terribly far into it yet so it's hard to say how I'll feel about it, but I'll give it a fair chance.

I read this book one or two years ago and wasn't really sure of it at the beginning but ended up really enjoying it.

Awesome, I just requested Horns from the GR book swap. Now I'm even more excited!

I finished The Slap last night (finally). It wasn't the worst book I've ever read, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Today I'm starting Persuasion. I have high hopes. Still reading and enjoying a few stories per day from The Mammoth Book of Modern Ghost Stories: Great Supernatural Tales of the Twentieth Century.

Kristin (kgansor) | 310 comments I finished The Art of Racing in the Rain today. I loved it... I did cry at the end even though I knew what was going to happen.
I would defiantly recommend this book to anyone who hasn't read it yet. I cant believe I found this at the book sale for only a dollar, perfect condition looks like it came straight out of the bookstore!
And aside from the ending being sad.. I also loved it.. it was very well done.

I love that book with all of my heart. It's one of the best books I have ever read. I am trying to get someone to go see the movie with me so I don't have to go alone.

Cait wrote: "Today I'm starting Persuasion. I have high hopes."

I really enjoyed it. I found it to be both more mature and more emotional than Pride and Prejudice. I hope you like it. :)

message 22568: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) Am still stalled in both A Room of One's Own and America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction. Maybe I need to read something fun and palate-cleansing?

message 22569: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Hollyberry | 60 comments Two of my top three favorite writers of all time are Rudyard Kipling and Lucy Maud Montgomery. I try to make everyone read Kim, but the short stories and the poetry are the best things he did. The trouble is that there isn't a comprehensive short story collection. Every one in print leaves out several of my favorites. :( At least I have
Rudyard Kipling: Complete Verse.

message 22570: by El (new)

El Ruby, I did wind up enjoying Kim, but it did take a while. I finished that yesterday and have moved on to Kipling's The Day's Work. I haven't even finished the first story yet, but from what I gathered from the Introduction I think this one will definitely interest me.

I'm glad to hear you liked it so much. It's definitely an interesting concept. I've been meaning to read it for a while and once I realized the movie was coming out I figured I'd better get to it. I always prefer to read the book before seeing the film. Good luck finding someone to go with you.

Michelle I held out on Catching Fire until Mockingjay came out and have now raced through Catching Fire and am about halfway through Mockinjay.

I'm also partway through Beat the Reaper, which I know got raves but I somehow just can't get into very well.

Patricia, I read Alice while I was on a very long holiday in Italy and would be reading a book of 800 pages in one week. This book however (which my boyfriend thought I would like) took me almost a month because I really didn't like it and thought it was pretty stupid. I dragged myself through it and it isn't even long.

Paula | 1098 comments I was talking to a person running a coffee shop at a doctor complex today while waiting for my daughter. We were talking about books because I had one with me and she had one on the counter. She had also read "Racing in the Rain" and loved it also. The hour I waited for my daughter went by very quickly!

message 22593: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (kgansor) | 310 comments Marti - I have a feeling you'll love the book also, I don't think i've seen anyone write anything bad about it.
I will say that some of the chapters I thought were a bit boring, but they're so short that it doesn't even matter.

message 22594: by Regan (new)

Regan | 19 comments I am currenty reading, The Ode Less Travelled, Frankenstein, Bless Me, Ultima, and The House of Spirits, which I am loving and should be done with tonight :D

message 22595: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Catie, I have that noted. I'll make a double feature of it. Thanks!

I loved Never Let You Go as well, and am dubious that the movie can work. And I agree, it's something best read with no idea what you're getting into.

message 22596: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I always comment on other peoples' books but forget to mention what I'm reading. I'm reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which seems appropriate since it's Banned Book Week. It's monumentally good.

message 22597: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (kgansor) | 310 comments I just finished The Society of S (Ethical Vampire, #1) by Susan Hubbard , I started Nutcase (A Kate Holly Case, #2) by Charlotte Hughes the other night before bed and made it 20 pages in..
