Carol I figured you all needed a laugh this morning. I put Freedom on hold at the library. I am now 202 in the queue. You think I might get it 2 years from now. hahahahaha

Lori Ann, my library doesn't have any copies of the second book. I'm going to have to find it another way (or skip directly to the third, which isn't a great option).

I'm going to second the Possession recommendation. It's one of my all-time favorites. The first hundred pages or so are pretty boring, but the rest of it is absolutely thrilling.

Well, one reason I thought it would have a bit of a twist at the end is because the other book of hers I read (Fingersmith) also had some twists and turns. I sort of guessed in what basic direction the twist would go although I didn't know exactly how it would play out (if that makes sense). There were several alternative ways it could have gone with the end being basically the same. I really don't like predictable endings - that is why I rarely re-read a book - if I know the ending it just doesn't hold interest for me.

OK, so if you like to camp in the woods, steer clear of this bad boy - I just finished The Wilding: A Novel and loved it, even though it's ruined the woods for me for awhile. Check out my review if you like -

Now I am about to start Hater by David Moody. This is supposed to be an end-of-the-world zombie like sort of book! Hoping it's good and gory!

I also started Lisey's Story. Yes the writing is very elegant and accomplished but Lisey is soooooo boring.

Try again! I gave up once too, because the beginning is pretty boring, but once the story really gets going it's one of the best books I've ever read. I need to read The Children's Book. I've heard good things, though apparently it's harder to get through than Possession.

I don't think so, it has more of a plot than Possession so it catches you easier/earlier, but it's got a lot of characters and it get confusing and a bit boring. Though it's a really lovely book, well worth the effort.

I'm struggling with Another Country by Baldwin for my English Lit course. I really wished they had picked another book to get for the start of the course because I'm really not into books about racial conflicts.

Lori, I really liked the idea for The Book of Lost Things but just couldn't get into it. I'm about 3/4 done with Room now and it's fantastic! The choice to have the five year old as the narrator definitely makes the story.

message 22431: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 293 comments I love Amelia Peabody. All this talk of Crocodile on the Sandbank is getting me nostalgic.

I finished Inanna, Lady of Largest Heart : Poems of the Sumerian High Priestess Enheduanna, which was excellent and am now doing a quick read of French San Francisco, my co-worker lent it to me and its interesting. She's a French San Franciscan herself so that's cool. Next I think I'm going to pick up One Good Knight. It's been on my shelf for awhile and after all this non-fiction I'm in the mood for a little fantasy.

Rosabelle Purnama | 87 comments Just finished reading Pandora's Daughter by Iris Johansen. I had low expectation when reading this book because I didn't really like Johansen's previous books that I read, but this one has so far exceeded my expectation and I quite enjoyed reading it.

I've now moved on to reading I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak.. Heard so many good reviews about this book..

I read In Cold Blood not too long ago. I thought it was ok but i didn't find it as scary as I had heard it was.

I finished The Hounds of the Baskervilles and I thought it was a fun read. Getting ready to start The Quiet American and not really sure what to expect from this one.

Petra I just finished Island of the Sequined Love Nun this afternoon. This is a different kind of Christopher Moore book than the other 3 I've read. Humerous and wacky with a serious underside.

I'm going to start reading The Girls this evening.

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 140 comments I stopped by the library today. My boyfriend was sitting using his computer, so I had lots of time to just roam around looking at stuff. I accidentally went a little crazy. Here's what I ended up with:

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
My Antonia by Willa Cather
Little Black Book of Stories by A.S. Byatt
The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston
The Telling by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier

And I got The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and The Good Daughters by Joyce Maynard in the mail today.

Yeah. It's a good day.

Quite a lot of good finds. Unfortunately I'm a little hesitant to go to my library right now. A couple of libraries in our county have had bed bug infestations and with all the transferring between branches I'm nervous to check out anymore. I'm even considering returning the ones I've got out now but I guess I've had them for a week so if any harm was done it was already done.

Actually not sure how well I'll sleep tonight. Haha.
