What are you reading?

Does it bother you to read a predictable ending? It's always a funny conundrum, I think: editors want you to give readers the "satisfying" ending they expect, but then readers are dissapointing that it's predictable. I'm curious as to your personal view...

What did you think of The Passage? I wanted to love it, but after about 200pgs, I was so bored, I put it down...yet my husband is plowing through and enjoying...

Im sorry to hear you are impressed with TBoLT. I really liked that one a lot. I think you should totally get started on ROOM. I loved that book. I can't say enough good things about it!!!

I also finished reading The Witch of Portobello which I found to be interesting... much better than The Alchemist in my opinion.
Now I'm on to Possession by A.S. Byatt. I've been wanting to get to this one for awhile so I'm hoping for good things!

I also finished ..."
Oh, Possession is fantastic! Just don't schedule anything important during the time you think it will take you to read it. You might be mentally elsewhere for a few days!

Our neighborhood book club will be doing The Art of Racing in the Rain, which I've heard fabulous things about, so am looking forward to that one.
I'm enjoying It's Not PMS, It's You! like bites of chocolate that make me laugh. I had not expected all the crazy literary references. The juxtaposition of that, and the zany humor is a very light and fun mix. I've enjoyed it as a 'soundbyte' moment kind of book, for those harried seconds I needed a lift - hoarded it that way - and am nearly done. I plan to read it again.

That is my favorite out of all her books. I hope you enjoy it!

Lori Ann, my library doesn't have any copies of the second book. I'm going to have to find it another way (or skip directly to the third, which isn't a great option).

I'm going to second the Possession recommendation. It's one of my all-time favorites. The first hundred pages or so are pretty boring, but the rest of it is absolutely thrilling.

I loved the Little Book! It was a great read with lots of historical references that were extremely interesting! I highly recommend it!

I liked the Passge, but there were some inconsistencies that left me with alot of questions. I hope that the rest of the trilogy clears some of that up.

Do..."
Well, one reason I thought it would have a bit of a twist at the end is because the other book of hers I read (Fingersmith) also had some twists and turns. I sort of guessed in what basic direction the twist would go although I didn't know exactly how it would play out (if that makes sense). There were several alternative ways it could have gone with the end being basically the same. I really don't like predictable endings - that is why I rarely re-read a book - if I know the ending it just doesn't hold interest for me.
OK, so if you like to camp in the woods, steer clear of this bad boy - I just finished The Wilding: A Novel and loved it, even though it's ruined the woods for me for awhile. Check out my review if you like -

Now I am about to start Hater by David Moody. This is supposed to be an end-of-the-world zombie like sort of book! Hoping it's good and gory!

Very sad, but very wonderful. So glad I read it! Will never forget the characters.

Happy to see that you liked it. It looks like a memorable book.

Enjoy! Still didn't read that one.

I waaaaaaant that one!

I also started Lisey's Story. Yes the writing is very elegant and accomplished but Lisey is soooooo boring.

I really enjoyed this book. I do think she got carried away with the descriptions at times and there were probable a few characters that were not necessary. Still, I couldn't put it down at times.

I gave up before the first pages - should I try again? I liked her The Children's Book

Try again! I gave up once too, because the beginning is pretty boring, but once the story really gets going it's one of the best books I've ever read. I need to read The Children's Book. I've heard good things, though apparently it's harder to get through than Possession.

Unfortunately I love camping, so I might have to skip this one.

I don't think so, it has more of a plot than Possession so it catches you easier/earlier, but it's got a lot of characters and it get confusing and a bit boring. Though it's a really lovely book, well worth the effort.
I'm struggling with Another Country by Baldwin for my English Lit course. I really wished they had picked another book to get for the start of the course because I'm really not into books about racial conflicts.
Thanks Alex. Yeah Devil's hole was the shit when i was younger. I havent been back there in ohhhhh 16 years or so... And now fat chance of that ever happening :)

Lori, I really liked the idea for The Book of Lost Things but just couldn't get into it. I'm about 3/4 done with Room now and it's fantastic! The choice to have the five year old as the narrator definitely makes the story.

I've read four of her books so far and S&S is definitely my favorite after Pride & Prejudice. Hope you enjoy it.

I finished Inanna, Lady of Largest Heart : Poems of the Sumerian High Priestess Enheduanna, which was excellent and am now doing a quick read of French San Francisco, my co-worker lent it to me and its interesting. She's a French San Franciscan herself so that's cool. Next I think I'm going to pick up One Good Knight. It's been on my shelf for awhile and after all this non-fiction I'm in the mood for a little fantasy.

I've now moved on to reading I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak.. Heard so many good reviews about this book..

Are you enjoying the story Beth? Catching Fire was my favorite book of the series.

I've now started Island of the Sequined Love Nun and am listening to The Golden Mean, which I'm really enjoying but wish I knew more about Aristotle and Alexander The Great.
