Petra I just got back from a few days of visiting my step-dad. While away, I finished reading Coffee: A Dark History (interesting in parts; dry in parts) and Crocodile on the Sandbank. I really enjoyed Amelia Peabody and will be reading more of the series.
I've now started Island of the Sequined Love Nun and am listening to The Golden Mean, which I'm really enjoying but wish I knew more about Aristotle and Alexander The Great.

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) Finally finished Wuthering Heights and I loved it. Just started on Hounds of the Baskervilles, it seems like a fun, easy read.

Does it bother you to read a predictable ending? It's always a funny conundrum, I think: editors want you to give readers the "satisfying" ending they expect, but then readers are dissapointing that it's predictable. I'm curious as to your personal view...

What did you think of The Passage? I wanted to love it, but after about 200pgs, I was so bored, I put it down...yet my husband is plowing through and enjoying...

What to start next?

Lori Ann | 105 comments Petra I just finished Crocodile on the Sandbank as well. My library only has the audio version of the second book so I've been dying to get to a bookstore to buy it.

I also finished reading The Witch of Portobello which I found to be interesting... much better than The Alchemist in my opinion.

Now I'm on to Possession by A.S. Byatt. I've been wanting to get to this one for awhile so I'm hoping for good things!

Oh, Possession is fantastic! Just don't schedule anything important during the time you think it will take you to read it. You might be mentally elsewhere for a few days!

message 22415: by Janny (new)

Janny (jannywurts) | 142 comments Finished Deceiver, which I loved. Just started Anathem, which is rivetingly different, so far. I'm enjoying the thought provoking complexity.

Our neighborhood book club will be doing The Art of Racing in the Rain, which I've heard fabulous things about, so am looking forward to that one.

I'm enjoying It's Not PMS, It's You! like bites of chocolate that make me laugh. I had not expected all the crazy literary references. The juxtaposition of that, and the zany humor is a very light and fun mix. I've enjoyed it as a 'soundbyte' moment kind of book, for those harried seconds I needed a lift - hoarded it that way - and am nearly done. I plan to read it again.

Lori Ann, my library doesn't have any copies of the second book. I'm going to have to find it another way (or skip directly to the third, which isn't a great option).

I liked the Passge, but there were some inconsistencies that left me with alot of questions. I hope that the rest of the trilogy clears some of that up.

Well, one reason I thought it would have a bit of a twist at the end is because the other book of hers I read (Fingersmith) also had some twists and turns. I sort of guessed in what basic direction the twist would go although I didn't know exactly how it would play out (if that makes sense). There were several alternative ways it could have gone with the end being basically the same. I really don't like predictable endings - that is why I rarely re-read a book - if I know the ending it just doesn't hold interest for me.

OK, so if you like to camp in the woods, steer clear of this bad boy - I just finished The Wilding: A Novel and loved it, even though it's ruined the woods for me for awhile. Check out my review if you like -

Now I am about to start Hater by David Moody. This is supposed to be an end-of-the-world zombie like sort of book! Hoping it's good and gory!

Try again! I gave up once too, because the beginning is pretty boring, but once the story really gets going it's one of the best books I've ever read. I need to read The Children's Book. I've heard good things, though apparently it's harder to get through than Possession.

I don't think so, it has more of a plot than Possession so it catches you easier/earlier, but it's got a lot of characters and it get confusing and a bit boring. Though it's a really lovely book, well worth the effort.

I'm struggling with Another Country by Baldwin for my English Lit course. I really wished they had picked another book to get for the start of the course because I'm really not into books about racial conflicts.

Lori, I really liked the idea for The Book of Lost Things but just couldn't get into it. I'm about 3/4 done with Room now and it's fantastic! The choice to have the five year old as the narrator definitely makes the story.

Madeline | 293 comments I love Amelia Peabody. All this talk of Crocodile on the Sandbank is getting me nostalgic.

I finished Inanna, Lady of Largest Heart : Poems of the Sumerian High Priestess Enheduanna, which was excellent and am now doing a quick read of French San Francisco, my co-worker lent it to me and its interesting. She's a French San Franciscan herself so that's cool. Next I think I'm going to pick up One Good Knight. It's been on my shelf for awhile and after all this non-fiction I'm in the mood for a little fantasy.

I've now moved on to reading I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak.. Heard so many good reviews about this book..
