L- I am so glad to hear that you liked Odd Thomas. The second book is just as good as the first!

Eliza - Saturday was an utter disappointment for me. The alley scene and the last 50 pages were the only good parts. I will not attempt another McEwan book due to how much i simply disliked that novel.

message 152: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I've recently read Twilight and New Moon and I'm through the first chaper of Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. I'm also working on Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury.

Cindy, Ive never read that but liked the movie, it was kinda creepy for its time. You will have to let me know what you think of the book, I would be interested to know if its good!

message 154: by Lorena (last edited Mar 23, 2008 04:44PM) (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I love Of love and Other Demons, Its that Magic Realism he's so famous for at its best. I have read most of his books as a teenager and now I'm revisiting them as an adult. It has been a good ride. I'm currently reading The General in His Laberynth, in Spanish also by Garcia Marquez.

Finally finished Mysterious Island today. I may pick up some more Verne... even tho his books seem long and technically detailed, i liked the way everything unravelled slowly, making me want to keep turning the pages....

Started to reread Neverwhere for our very first group read. I read this when it first hit paperback, so you can imagine how little i actually remember of it... haa haa. I started this afternoon and im already halfway thru...

message 156: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Hala (tamara_hala) I've been reading The River Wife by Jonis Agee and I Can't put it down. It's the best book I've read so far this year!

message 157: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Why oh why do I go downstairs "just to peek" when I drop by the library to pick up my hold books -- New Moon by Stephenie Meyer(about time, I was on the list for waaaaayy too long!) and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman for my group read.

Now I'm reading the two I just mentioned, still trying to finish P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield from my last library binge before they're due, and I just couldn't keep my hands off of Promise Me by Harlan Coben that has been staring at me from my bookshelf and crying out "Why haven't you picked me up yet, I've been sitting here for almost 6 months!! GASP!"

Thank goodness I have been able to restrain myself from stopping by B&N (and the Borders is too far away to just stop in, what with gas prices as there are and my commute already brutal at 100 miles/day...I really can't afford to add another 80 miles to the trip just so I can spend that gift card from Christmas that I can think of a hundred ways to spend...I REALLY want to go, but I must be strong and resist!!)

I really do have a problem...*L*

message 158: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I finished The Kite Runner (which was truly magnificent and I'm sorry that I resisted it so vehemently) and have started Atonement which I am enjoying so far (about 60+ pages in).

message 159: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) Lori ~ I'm reading it slowly since I'm reading a couple of other books at the same time but I'm liking it so far. I remember watching the movie when I was a kid and I really liked it, it creeped me way out. Bradbury has a very interesting writing style that I always find a little hard to get used to at first. I'm hoping to finish it this week while I'm on vacation from work. I'm also reading Neverwhere and Migraine by Oliver Sacks.

message 161: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth i'm can't wait for the next Inheritance cycle book to come out. Also the next Warrior book to come out. Does anyone know the name of the next Inheritace book.

message 162: by Celeste (last edited Mar 28, 2008 09:34PM) (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 107 comments The next Inheritance book is called Brsinger and is to be released on September 20th. i don't know about the next Warrior book. When that information falls in my lap I'll pass it along.

Oh and by the way, right now I'm reading Dragonspell by Donita Paul. It was recommended to me by my 16 year old daughter. She read the series several years ago,but still loves them. I must say, I'm enjoying the read.

message 163: by Jen (last edited Mar 29, 2008 11:29AM) (new)

Jen | 278 comments I just finished A Pigeon and a Boy by Meiv Shalev which was another book club pick and I loved it. After finishing, my husband, baby and I walked to the library to return it and the woman at the front desk told me they had Neverwhere waiting for me. YEAH! I'm so excited. I had requested it but someone else had the copy checked out at our branch so I walked in a little sad that I wasn't going to start in on the group book read yet. I'm so excited to get started and participate in the discussion.

...it's the little things.

I am reading next Trunk Music by Michael Connelly which is the 5th book in his Harry Bosch series.

I'm kinda addicted to series books and right now I am trying to get caught up with several including these two.

message 169: by Lorena (last edited Mar 31, 2008 09:56AM) (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Hello everyone I'm currently reading "the secret life of bees" (liking it a lot, very easy to read and great story line) and "Neverwhere" (which might have to wait until I'm done with Bees as my ADD gets the two mixed up in my brain). And reading Peter Pan with my daughter as a bed time story, we just read the chapter where Peter builds a house for Wendy, I just love that chapter, its so romantic in a twisted way.
-Lorena

message 170: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments No worries Scott. You could always just grab a copy of The Other Boelyn Girl if you don't find a copy of Neverwhere. :)

message 172: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I'm reading The Other Boleyn Girl - fantastic so far!!

message 173: by Anne (new)

Anne | 15 comments Hi Lori, just picked up All the Names myself but haven't read it yet. I have read Blindness, The Cave, and The Double by Saramago. I agree that his writing can be challenging (he is definitely not a "light" read) but I am always glad to have read one of his books. Its like exercise in a way, kind of difficult, but you feel good to have done it.

message 174: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Magpie -- I LOVE Michael Connelly, especially his Harry Bosch novels! Since I'm anxiously awaiting his new book this fall, I'm actually going backwards & reading the first ones I never read like Black Echo, Black Ice, & Void Moon. The Concrete Blonde was his first that I read and I was hooked from there!!

As for current reads, I'm still working on Neverwhere for the group read. I am also whipping through New Moon by Stephenie Meyer and Something Blue by Emily Giffin (I forgot how much I LOVE this series by her until I grabbed this off my shelf!) Then there's The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and P.S. I Love you by Ceceila Ahern that I have to finish this week to get it back to the library. And they have two more on hold for me when I go Tuesday...plus the other six that I got on my last visit...*sigh*...can I retire so I have more time to read??

message 175: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments OMG Katie how weird that was the first one I read as well and I hvae read everyone since, well every Harry Bosch one that is ..didn't really like Chasing the Dime .

message 176: by Alayna (new)

Alayna | 78 comments i had no idea that dexter was a book series i love the show, are the books better? did the show ruin the books (cuz shows and movies sometimes do that to books)

message 177: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments The first Dexter book is a lot like the first season of the Showtime show. But the second season deviates pretty strongly from the next book. I haven't read the 3rd one yet, I'm waiting for it to come out in paperback. Dexter is one of the few adaptations where I would say that the show is better than the book.

message 178: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) I'm reading two books right now: Embrace the Night by Karen Chance and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

I'm trying to read more of the "classics" than I have in the past. I think I picked a great one to start with - I'm really enjoying Jane so far. She's awesome and I'm only to the 4th or 5th chapter.

I try to avoid reading more than one book at a time because I prefer to focus on one and get really in to it. However, Embrace the Night came in the mail yesterday (just released) and it is an entry in one of my favorite series. LOVING it so far! :)

message 179: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Not sure if I've posted in this thread yet... don't think I have.

I'm currently reading Split Second by David Baldacci, and I'm really enjoying it. Got about 100 pages left so should finish it tomorrow. I made the mistake of reading the middle book of this trilogy first, so am backtracking with this one, lol.

Then i'll be moving on to The Book Theif which I'm reading with a YA book group that I'm part of. Sounds interesting and I'm looking forward to it.

Logan..... you said "The first Dexter book is a lot like the first season of the Showtime show. But the second season deviates pretty strongly from the next book".

The second season for Dexter is not out yet, at least for me here.. are you not in the US? It comes out this Sept if I am not mistaken.

I have read all three books before seeing the show, and I agree, the book and 1st season follow one another quite closely. I love them both the same. The book gives you more insight into the character. What drives him, what his family life was like... Niether ruin each other at all in my opinion.

Oh, as far as what Im reading, I am still fighting my way thru VALIS by Philip K. Dick. I find it very hard to get into. This must be my second week with it. (which is a LIFETIME for me to spend on ONE book!)

It's crazy and way out there. I think the main character is sckitso, double personality, thinks he saw god through a pink lazer beam. Time-space stuff is brought into play, and some movie the characters all see that totally whigs them out... Im into the homestretch now, and i cant wait to be done with it. I think I will be happy to never read another Dick novel as long as I live. From what I hear it is based on his real life experiences. That dude has some major issues! A Scanner Darkly was funny and wicked and trippy and I liked it, but this book is awful....

message 182: by Alayna (new)

Alayna | 78 comments i am currently reading Shadowmarch by Tad Williams. its a fantasy book which i normally dont read it was given to me as a birthday present and has been collecting dust on my bookshelf, but lately i felt like something different and i felt like escaping completely from reality. so far its interesting but defitnly not what i usually read.

message 183: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I am reading Brother Odd, the last book so far in the Odd Thomas series. I was suprised to read that two other books in the series are due for release--The next book in the series and a graphic novel as the prequel to Odd Thomas. I thought it was going to end with Brother Odd!

message 184: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Lori, I watched it last summer when it first aired on Showtime. You are really in for a treat when it comes out on video. Each episode just kept getting better and better. I am salivating at the thought of the third season, the show's Wiki entry says that it will be airing starting September 30. Nice to know I'll have something to watch after this season of Lost ends.

As for Valis, my friend Jack put together a Reader's Advisory Page for the book for a class he's in. It helps shed some light on the book, and Dick's mental illness. It's worth a readthrough and could help give you that last push you need to finish it:

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Logan, thanks for the extra info on VALIS. I have about 50 pages to go, the book really goes too far into wacky detail for me. If they just kept to the storyline and left out all the exgesis entries and religious theories, it would flow so much better for me. I actually like the conversations between the characters, but when Fat(Dick) goes on his rants, I get totally lost and confused. hmmmmm.....

message 186: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
BTW, Logan, I am offically a complete idiot! I went out this week and bought Dexter season 1, thinking that is the one i was watching on showtime this fall.... and so i went to the wiki thing, and NOW I SEE I WAS WATCHING SEASON 2 and never even saw season 1!!! Now i cant wait to watch the dvd set i bought!

Yeah!!!!.... and then in answer to the question above, season two follows a parallel storyline to the first and second novels... similar but not totally the same.

I cant tell you how stupid (but excited) I feel now that I realise that I have a whole season to catch up on... derrrr.....

message 193: by Renata (new)

Renata | 67 comments I'm reading "The History of Love" by Nicole Krauss. What took me so long to pick this book off my shelf of hundreds! It is really engrossing. Confusing how the characters are tied together (I'm not done yet, so not sure if I've figured it all out), but it's worth the time. Her writing style is unique (maybe just different), and I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I'm loving it. It is a very pleasant surprise since I didn't really like her previous book ("A man walks into a room").

Anyway, when I'm done, it's onto "The Other Boleyn Girl" for the group read.
