Worst book i have read in awhile.

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) Hot Six by Janet Evanovich. I picked up One for the Money the other day to read after The Glass Castle since it's kind of emotionally strong and I want something lighthearted as a chaser so to speak. Anyway, so I decided to read all of the Plum books in the series. 5 down, 7 to go.

message 103: by Anne (new)

Anne | 15 comments Hi Cindy....I really enjoy the Stephanie Plum books too. They're an easy read and the characters crack me up (I especially love Grandma). Did you hear their making a movie based on the series?

message 104: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I've been waiting for them to make this movie for a couple of years now. Grandma Mazur is one of my favorite characters. Of course, I love all the main characters.

message 105: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Just finished "What The Dead Know", what a waste of time. Up next, "Then We Came To The End" by Joshua Ferris.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) i'm forcing my way through "the may queen-women on life, love, work and pulling it all together in your 30's" ~ not my usual type of book, but it was highly recommended to me through a goodreads friend, so i thought i'd give it a shot. i don't know ~ it's not clicking with me yet!

message 107: by Anne (new)

Anne | 15 comments I'm just about finished with "A Piece of Cake" about a woman's survival of an abusive childhood, drug abuse, gangs, life on the streets, etc. This is my second memoir this month (also read "Eat, Pray, Love", which I didn't care for much). I am not generally a big fan of such stories so I probably not going to like it as much as others will. I need to get back to some fiction.

Patricia... What was wrong with What The Dead Know? Is that the memoir of a girl who grows up in a funeral parlor? I thought that sounded like a good book, but havent bought it yet. (Maybe thats a good thing?)

I am currently reading Factotum... almost done with it. I like Bukowski, this is my third book by him, but ive noticed his novels read more like a bunch of short stories that have been tied together....

message 109: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Lori, What The Dead Know by Laura Lippman is about two sisters that go missing, and one turns up alive 20 years later. The author built the suspense throughout the book then the last two chapters decided "ok here's what happened I'm done, the end" I was so disappointed.

Opps, i got two books mixed up. I do remember reading the plot on that one.... it stinks when the ending doesnt deliever... I may not rush out to get that one, then.

message 111: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) I'm almost done with Hard Eight, about a chapter to go, so I'll be starting To the Nines later today.

well, two days ago I had started The Seven Days Of Peter Crumb... but then, while in NYC yesterday I bought Maines new book - Monster, 1959... and Peter Crumb is currently taking a backseat till I finish Monster.... I have been waiting for this one to hit the shelves....

message 113: by KHoopMan (new)

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments I'm almost done with Middlesex (I can't put it down), and then I get to choose from the pile on my bureau:

Blindness
On the Road
Cloud Atlas
Wicked
The Other Boleyn Girl
I Am Legend

Any suggestions?? I'm torn.

message 114: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Oooohhh... Blindness first.... you MUST read that. Thats one of my all time favorite novels. and then I Am Legend... did you see the movie yet? I hope not, the book is sooo much better. You should read that before seeing the movie so you arent tainted by the changes....

message 115: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich

message 116: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) Finished Ten Big Ones last night and started Eleven On Top before I went to sleep. I'll probably finish it tonight or tomorrow and start Twelve Sharp as soon as it's done. I don't usually read quite this fast (close though) but when I'm reading a series, especially a fun series like this, I tend to plow through it like I have nothing else to do. Meanwhile the laundry is threatening to escape from my room down the hallway.

message 117: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Cindy .. you sound just like me. When I find a good series, I cant finish them fast enough. Although, when i get to the end of it, im always depressed that there arent any more. How many books are in this series... it seems as though it never ends???

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Monster,1959 was a really great campy, scifi twist of a novel. The Seven Days of Peter Crumb was borderline gorey, but still an interesting read. then I read The Good Fairies of New York... OHMIGOD what a waste of time and money. I forced myself to read it. It was awful.

Now I am reading Gils All Fright Diner by A Lee Martinez. Almost 100 pages in and I really hate putting it down. Its a fun vampire/werewolf as the good guys novel, reminiscent of Moore and Adams in its goofiness... I may have to pick up more by this author. Has anyone read anything by him before that can suggest which I should read next?

message 119: by Blujbird (new)

Blujbird Twig | 12 comments I just finished "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. Hard to believe he won a Pulitzer for this piece of shit.
I read others by him that are great sweeping landscapes of starkness, pain and stifled emotion.
But this one, ugh, I didn't feel a thing. And the ending? Jeeze, a Pulitzer? I'm sorry but I just don't get it.

message 120: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Ouch Blujbird, thats one of my all time favorite books. Guess its not for everyone, tho, huh? Im the opposite of you too... I really really liked The Road and never had an urge to read any of his other novels as they all seem a little too country-ish and cowboyish for me.

message 121: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments I'm reading "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle and "On Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan. McEwan's book is for a book club and I'll admit that I wouldn't have picked it up on my own but I love his writing. I will definitely pick up more from this author.

message 122: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Hala (tamara_hala) I'm reading:

1. My Lobotomy by Howard Dully
2. Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription: Notes and Asides from the National Review by William F Buckley
3. His Dark Materials Book III: The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman

I tend to read different books at different places... one at home, one at my boyfriend's, one at work. And I also usually have an audiobook going as well, eek!

message 123: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I'm currently reading The Haymakers by Steven Hoffbeck (for school) and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen; I'm also listening to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer on CD. I just finished Northanger Abbey by Austen and really loved it and I'm enyjoying S&S so far.

Wow Tamara... I dont know how you handle all those books at once. Im a one-book-at-a-time kinda girl myself...

Im currently reading The Testament of Gideon Mack.. Its an interesting novel about a minister who doesnt believe in god, but ends up believing that the Devil saves his life.. then he disappears and all that is left of him is this so-called testament of his life. I'm liking it so far. Its heavy on his background... im about 100 pages in and there is no real suspense yet, but i am very hopeful.

message 125: by Beth (new)

Beth (bethwerling) Oh Blujbird, that hurts me--I LOVED "The Road." But, as has been said, not everyone likes the same things. I for one did not like AT ALL the new Oprah's Book Club book by Tolle and I've heard so many raves about it. That didn't get that book at all.

message 126: by Jodie (new)

Jodie (jodiemill) | 44 comments I'm currently reading Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald. It's about a girl from Iran who comes to America to find a husband. I just started it and it's a little slow going, but I'm keeping a positive mindset about it.

message 127: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Hi all, I just joined this group and I have to say, Lori, I am blown away by how fast you read! Gosh, I wish I could get through all of the books that I am trying to read as fast as you seem to tackle yours! I'm jealous! Sadly, I have very little time each day to read...I squeeze in as much as I can but between work, my commute to and from work, the gym, chores, and errands, I don't have much left!

That having been said, here's what I'm reading right now: The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory (I'm only two chapters in but I like it so far), The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield (got me from the third page), P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern (another one that got me hooked by the first chapter), Double Cross by James Patterson, Scavenger by Tom Savage, Death du Jour by Kathy Reichs, Without a Map by Meredith Hall (she's my mentor), Never Give Up by Tedi Bruschi (I love Tedi!!), The Curse of the Singles Table by Suzanne Schlosberg, and Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner.

I just finished Twilight by Stephenie Meyer earlier this week. I wasn't very excited about reading YA stuff since I'm well past that age, but I've heard so much about it I had to see what all the fuss was about. It took me about 150 pages to get into it, but then it flew. I'm looking forward to reading the other two books in the series (along with completing the ones I'm working on listed above) over my vacation next week...finally some down time to do nothing more than sit by the pool with a good book!!

Happy reading everyone...and keep the suggestions & comments coming! I enjoy reading what everyone else is checking out!!

message 128: by KHoopMan (new)

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments I've decided to switch gears from the heavy-handed reading. I just read a few Flannery O'Connor stories, now I'm going to read A Wrinkle in Time. I know I liked in the sixth grade, and it's on the 1001 list, so hopefully I breeze through it this weekend. After that, I told some girls at work that we'd read Saturday by Ian McEwen. I haven't read any of his work- I just hope it's not as depressing as my last read (Blindness by Jose Saramago). Have a great weekend everyone!

Katie, I only work three days a week, and the kids are in school for most of the day during the week... not to mention that i put off house chores for as long as i can stand to... Shame on me! I actually get jealous of quite a few people in here who read twice as much as me... So its funny you say that!

How the heck are you reading so many books at the same time? I wouldnt be able to keep the story lines straight!

message 130: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) I usually don't read multiple stories at once, but I have been for the past week. But they are very different stories and I am not able to confuse the plots.

I am currently reading Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech and The Diary of a Young Girl

message 131: by Anne (new)

Anne | 15 comments Just finished The Cave by Saramago and am now reading Come Back which is another memoir. Don't usually like memoirs those this is my 4th this year....damn.

message 132: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Eliza - When you finish "Saturday" please post what you think. I just finished reading On "Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan and loved his writing. I'm interested in reading more.

Veronica - I read "Walk Two Moons" a couple of years ago with my daughter and we really enjoyed it. It has a few interesting twists in it.

After finishing Chesil Beach, I picked up "Gods in Alabama" by Joshilyn Jackson. I saw it on the summer reading shelf at Borders last year and just picked it up from the library. Going to the library is a recent adjustment for me and I'm still not sure how I feel about it...

Jen, if this helps at all, I read Saturday when it came out and suffered for three weeks with it. It was a tough book to get into for me. Really long and drawn out and slow paced. But i persevered and was glad to hit the last 50 pages, as that was the huge climactic event... but boy boh boy, he could have easily chopped out about a hundred pages and the book would have been better.

Angel, how was The Cave? I have picked that up and will be reading it eventually... (I have a few other novels to read before i get to it)

message 134: by Anne (new)

Anne | 15 comments Hi Lori, I really enjoyed The Cave but his books definitely require a little more focus and effort. I like reading these kinds of books in between "lighter" fiction...its kind of like exercise, a little tough but you're always glad you did it :)

Jen-I read gods in Alabama, and her second novel Between, Georgia. I found them both very entertaining and see that she has a new book out. Will be picking that up when it comes out in paperback.

I finished Testament of Gideon Mack last nite -- a good storyline, just takes forever to pick up and get running. (Bout 250 pages actually.) the last 100 pages flew. Quite a rewarding read towards the end. Not an easy, breezy read by any means. Took me about 6 days, and thats a long time for me!!!

Currently started The Mysterious Island. This is another not-so-easy-read. Its a huge book by my standards, and the writing doesnt flow off the page, so I expect to work at this one as well. Very excited to have started it tho, as I am a LOST addict, and this novel has influenced the show in many ways.

message 136: by Magpie67 (new)

Magpie67 | 33 comments I am currently reading Killing Critics by Carol O'Connell. It is the third book in the Mallory series. I'm enjoying the highly intectual prose by this author.

I just finished reading:

Pieces of My Sister's Life by Elizabeth Joy Arnold and I was disappointed in the writing style and that it lacked the depth on so many emotional levels.

Also, I completed The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and what an eye opener that was. Soooooo different from the movie. I enjoyed it because I love the imagination that anyone has to create a different world. Fun!

Theresa (tsorrels) Blujbird, I congratulate you on finishing The Road. I got three pages in and gave up. Totally not my type of book, apparently.

I'm currently reading three books:

Lunch Break/Home: Crimson City by Liz Maverick

Bedside (because it is too big and bulky to lug around): The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano

Online (it's free for a month which is awesome because it gives me something to do in the downtime at work): American Gods by Neil Gaiman

Cheryl S. | 22 comments Hi Red--I'm a James Lee Burke fan too and have read Tin Roof Blowdown and liked it very much. I'm always amazed at Burke's ability to come up with new ways for Cletus to get Dave in trouble--although he seems to find plenty of trouble on his own.

alicia grant (shesha556) I am reading The Witch is Dead by Shirley Damsgaard.I really enjoy this series it the latest and very good.

message 140: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I'm finishing A Prayer for Owen Meany and starting Odd Thomas (finally). I meant to start Odd Thomas like a month ago, but things have been out of control here lately so reading time has taken a severe hit. Never has one book taken me so long to finish. Looking forward to the Odd Thomas series though.

message 141: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Lori -- I probably asked before, but I've seen some of your posts in other groups and I know how much you get to read every day (I'm so jealous!!) so I was just curious how you chose the books that you are reading. They seem to be all over the map genre/author-wise so I just wondered. I've been trying out a lot of new authors & even genres since I joined Goodreads but some of the things you've read I've never heard of. How did you discover them? Have they all been worth it?? Like I said, I was just curious:)

Okay, as for what I'm reading, I've been so excited to have tons of reading time during my vacation (and I have the sunburn already to prove all of those hours sitting by the pool with a good book!) I've read three books in three days and right now I'm working on Naked in Death by J.D. Robb (not feeling the futuristic aspect of this but I'll truck through...I almost never leave a book I've started unfinished even if I have to force myself to read it!) and I've just started The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory and Being Committed by Anna Maxted. I took out two more from the library down here, so I've got four days to finish them all before I go back home to cold New England!! Wish me luck:)

Katie,
I get my books from a bunch of different sources. I am currently obessesed with wanting to read the books that appear on or are linked to LOST (you may have seen my post on it.. hee hee), so I am currently buying books and reading off that list for the time being.

I have also just looked at the books that other members (here and on myspace) are currently reading or highly recommend and if they look good, I swing into the store and read a page or two to see if its my cup of tea. Another way, when Im running out of books that interest me is to check out the new reviews here. Sometimes i find some books i would never have picked up - or novels i never even heard of- through this site. And they turn out to be great reads. Also, if you check out the books youve read on this site or bn.com, it will tell you what other books are similar, or other books people bought when they bought that book...even though it can be time consuming, you tend to run across some really neat things...

My least favorite way is to just walk into Borders and start at letter A in the lit/fiction section and just browse till something pops out at me. I say that is my least favorite becuase i tend to get neck cramps from standing there with my held tilted to the side for hours checking books out.... Haa haa.

Hope that has answered your question. Im a book-junkie.. i cant help but find new ways to find great books :)

L---- Ahhh... I love Odd Thomas. You will have to let me know what you think as you go along. He is a tough character to say goodbye to when the last page of the last chapter of the last book is done :(

message 144: by Brooke (new)

Brooke I'm reading My Lobotomy by Howard Dully and The Dogs Who Found Me (What I Learned From Dogs Left Behind) by Ken Foster. I'm about to start Someone like You by Kathy Kelly for a book club.

message 145: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Lori--I am 150 pages in and the book is already working its way into my subconscious. Odd is a easy character to get into but the twisted subject of the books is starting to work its way into my dreams--I dreamed of serial killers last night.

message 146: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Lori---Wow! you were right, Odd Thomas is amazing. I can't wait to start the second book now, though my heart could just about break after the first one. My first Dean Koontz book, The Good Guy, made me want to throw the book against the wall at times and I thought of giving up on Koontz altogether...glad I didn't.

message 147: by Avanders (new)

Avanders I was very impressed with Brother Odd... I started the books out of order, but am very excited to go back and read the other 2 now!
I'm currently reading City of Saints & Madmen... though after all this time I am almost finished! I absolutely love the book (though criticisms do exist) and can't wait to write/post my review! :)

message 148: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) I'm reading Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

For as short as the book is, it is taking me awhile to finish it. It is a beautiful story (so far), but I've had a hard time following it. I think maybe this is because of the foreign names and because the author jumps around while doing the histories on the different people in the book. He'll be writing about present day and then, all of a sudden in the next paragraph, it'll be the beginning of another character's history.

message 149: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I'm finishing up My Ántonia today, then I have a rather long list of books from the library that I decided to get on a whim. Since the book is almost always better than the movie, I'm going to work my way through these before I view their film adaptations:

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
Atonement by Ian McEwan
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

I have plenty of books on my shelves and a 'to-read' list a mile long, so I don't know why I feel compelled to run to the library and get a stack of books as long as my arm. I think I may have an illness.

message 150: by KHoopMan (new)

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments I suffer from the same illness, Charity. I have so many books piled up in my bedroom, but I ran to the library instead. I really can't explain it.

I just finished Saturday by Ian McEwen - I didn't love it. I like to be shaken up by a book, and this story did not deliver.

Next up is The Thirteenth Tale, also a library binge, and then I will attempt to read whatever this club selects for the group read.
