I'm reading "The Inconsolable" by Kazuo Ishiguru. It's a strange book, the author dares to do things like change point of view (the book is written in first person but tells what is in other people's minds) Interesting.

Am readingThe Vanishing of Katharina Linden in ARC format...so far so good. A "missing child" story with a smart, witty 11-year-old protagonist. Reminds me of The Little Friend , but this story is set in Germany, not the American SouthJ

Bridgit, did you see the Lost references in there? The room under the ground that was like a bunker with a little door that would produce your every wish? Very similar to the room that Ben took Locke to when he wished for his father to appear.....
I especially loved how he explained the multiple reflections of a person in the mirror as it being reflections of them successively younger...
And the way a person can absorb part of the bike or visa versa to the point where they take on similar appearances and personalities.
Or the way he described a road as only running in one direction, so that at times, people are taking roads in the wrong direction....
I could go and on...

The mirror analogy was one of my favorite parts!
I've been working a biography of Nathanael West...so everything's had to do with that. A few awesome surprises have been Fitzgerald's The Pat Hobby Stories. The whole cycle (for which he was paid $4,500)and the last of which were published after he died. I found them, like the best of West's work on Hollywood, funny, biting, sad. Also, because West was interested in Arthur Machen, I've been reading his The Great God of Pan and The Hill of Dream...turn of the century science fiction...wild.
just finished Dead in the Family. not bad, but not fabulous. back to Pillars of the Earth tomorrow. i'll get through that, i swear!
It is my busy time of year so the reading needs to be light and easy... I am reading A Good Yarn and the Summer on Blossom Street. I am about 1/3 through the first one.Linda and Linda, I felt the same way about The Reliable Wife. I did feel like I was being dragged in and I really wanted to finish the book.
I'm reading The Unsung Heroby Suzanne Brockmann. It has been on my shelf for awhile, but I started it today while on the eliptical (thanks to my awesome book holder).
Alex wrote: "I'm reading Holy Warriors: A Modern History of the Crusades. Been looking for a while for a good history of the Crusades; at about a third of the way through, I think I've chosen ri..."Alex, I realized the only Peter Pan I knew was Disney and that's not too reliable. I thought I should check out the real thing and so far I'm really enjoying it.
Lori Ann wrote: "Oooo Melissa I'm reading Peter Pan right now also!"
Lori Ann, are you enjoying Peter Pan. I'm having such fun reading it.
There is a live action movie that follows the story pretty well. I don't remember when or where I found it, but it a lovely movie.

I'm reading The Lost Tomb: In 1995, an American Egyptologist Discovered the Burial Site Of the Sons of Ramesses II--This Is His Story by Kent R. Weeks.
I'm reading Winterkill by CJ Box right now. Slow start but really good after you get past about page 80. The next book will probably be either The House of Riverton or The Serpent's Tale. I can't decide, I'm really anxious to try them both.
I have been absent for a while, but am chiming in again :)I'm working on several books right now. I received Under the Dome for Christmas and started it a few weeks ago. I'm only 200 pages into the 1100 total.
Also, I just started Reading Lolita in Tehran for book club.
I always have an audio book going in the car too. I'm getting to the end of The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History which has been really interesting and eye-opening.
How ya likin' Under the Dome? My wife dug it; my other friend thought it was just okay; I started it and lost interest, but that wasn't really its fault. I was distracted by some other book.
Hi all. Just joined the group so 1st time post here...i'm about 200 pgs into The Black Minutes by Martin Solares. Really enjoying it so far...at times the translation is a little off but so far so good!
I just finished The Red Tent and I loved it! I thought it was such a beautiful book. It's definitely one I see myself re-reading. Now I'm reading Dracula. So far I'm enjoying it and am finding it easier to read than I thought.
Let's see...I'm currently reading Mansfield Park (Jane Austen), Timeline (Michael Crichton), Inkspell (Cornelia Funke), The Journal of Curious Letters (James Dashner), The Golden Spiral (Lisa Mangum), The Pickwick Papers (Charles Dickens), Our Mutual Friend (Charles Dickens), The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain (Mark Twain), Mr. Darcy Presents His Bride (Helen Halstead), Colonel Brandon's Diary (Amanda Grange), Happenstance Found (P.W. Catanese), and Charlotte Gray (Sebastien Faulks).
Alex wrote: "Eden, how do you like it? It looks...weird. That's a very long title."The title is really long. I'm not very far into it, about 33 pages. But it is very good.
I just got finished with a couple of books - the best was Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War. I wouldn't normally pick up a book about the Vietnam War, but it had gotten some excellent reviews so I thought I would give it a chance and I have to say it was incredible. Definitely a 5 star read for me.Just started Little Bee.
Also have started compiling my list of what I want to read over the summer. We should have a thread of everyone's summer reading lists :)
Nowhere to Run newest from CJ BOX, not really enjoying it so far, about 60 pages in Fire a GREAT story, a companion novel to
book:Graceling|3236307] but they are stand alones
Eternal a very different take on vampires and how they came into existence, has a guardain angel too
I hope not too! Considering that I've got almost 1500 on my TBR list, with more added all the time, I should be good for awhile yet! :D
I just finished Ben Tanzer's book Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine... It's a fun inside look at a dysfunctional relationship.
About to start David H. Burton's eBook The Second Coming.

Natalie wrote: "Has anyone read "lesssons of Terror" by Caleb Carr?I've read it twice and think he has something worth reading about the history of terrorism. However, I can't figure out what his point is. anyone ..."Natalie,
I have added this one to my TBR. I am a fan of his writing. I will let you know what impressions he has left on me once I have finished. it.
I'm currently re-reading book four in Lynn Viehl's Darkyn series: Night Lost. I think this is my third or fourth time through the series and I still can't keep all of the characters straight. The newest book (Kyndrid series) comes out next month, so I have to be ready for it!BTW, I am new to Goodreads although I joined a long time ago. I just never participated until now.
Lori wrote: "Elaine, thanks for participating now! You have no idea what you have been missing :)"Well, it's not like I need help adding to my TBR stack! -grin- I am a school librarian in "real" life and can't keep up with the YA books I need/want to read. Now that summer break is almost here, I plan on concentrating on my books.
I'm struggling with "Inconsolable" about a renown musician who comes to a town in Europe. It just goes on and on with people he doesn't know "or remember" who apologize but "would he mind doing this or that" 3/4 way through and it doesn't come to a point. Picked up "Italy in Mind", a series of essays written by Lord Byron, Mary McCarthy, etc. I'll be thee next month so figure its worth reading.
Lori wrote: "I just finished Ben Tanzer's book Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine... It's a fun inside look at a dysfunctional relationship.About to start [author:David H. Burton|1216..."
Wait!!! Someone wrote a book about me and my ex????! Good to know!!
Natalie, Italy in Mind sounds very interesting. I'd like to hear how it goes for you. I love reading about a place you're soon to visit! One of my favorite things to do.
Alex wrote: "How ya likin' Under the Dome? Hi Alex,
I'm liking it ok, but it's got so many characters to keep track of and since it hasn't been an exclusive read for me, I keep having to remember who everyone is. I'm going to keep plugging along - it's just so daunting trying to hold up that big ol' hardback while reading in bed. I keep considering buying it for my Nook, but haven't broke down yet :)
Ah yes. Tomes like Under the Dome are made for e-readers. I let my wife borrow mine just to read it.

I just picked up She's Come Undone. I'm a little nervous that it's an Oprah Bookclub pick. I hope it's not lame.
