Maureen (maureenokeefe) | 3 comments Reading "Wolf Hall" for my book club. Very interesting..

message 18907: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Over the weekend finished:

The Age of Innocence - Edith Wharton
The Old Man and The Sea - Hemingway
Deafening - Frances Itani
Black Beauty - Anna Sewell

and am currently reading Rabbit, Run by John Updike.

I really loved all four of these book. Rabbit Run is leaving me a little non-plussed. I'm just hoping to finish it soon to move on to something with hooks in it.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Starting something I just got out of the library - Roman Life: 100 B.C. to A.D. 200. Looks very cool, highly illustrated, with a CD-ROM tour of the House of the Vetii in Pompeii. Different tours if you tell it you're a slave, client, member of the family, etc., apparently.

Samuel | 1 comments The Book of God and Physics: A Novel of The Voynich Mystery

Extremely interesting, and very factual based. However, I am getting a "Da Vinci Code" vibe to it.

message 18913: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Wolf Hall's a cool book.

Susanna, that sounds cool too! I love the sorta virtual tour bit. I keep waiting for someone to put together Flash walkthroughs of various landmarks on the web; kinda surprised it hasn't happened yet.

Samuel, the Voynich manuscript is fascinating huh? Does lend itself to Da Vinci Code-esque conspiracy theories though. You'll have to let us know how it turns out.

message 18914: by Carol (new)

Carol Alex have you read Thieves World-Claire Sterling? I am reading it now.

message 18915: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Nope! Fantasy / sci-fi's usually not really my thing. I like the anthology idea though, that's neat.

message 18916: by Carol (new)

Carol I don't think it is sci-fi. It is about the mafia and the Columbia drug cartel combining forces and creating a global cartel along with Japan, Russia etc. It is suppose to be true.

message 18917: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Ha! Wow, did I find the wrong Thieves' World. You meant Thieves' World: The Threat of the New Global Network of Organized Crime. Well, that sounds considerably more up my alley. Very interesting. Let me know how you like it when you're done.

Great book Bridgit! I loved this novel so much. I met Frances Itani at an authors event and she is adorable and was very generous with her time - we talked about writing for nearly 30 minutes. I have her novel Remembering the Bones, which she signed for me that evening, waiting on my book shelf. I'm scared to read it as I don't want to spoil my perfect Itani moment! LOL!!

Howdy goodreadians! everyone seems to be reading some great books out there.

I am still making my way through Banned for Life - even though it is taking me longer than usual (due to my life, not due to the novel) I am sooo wrapped up it! I cannot keep myself from thinking about when I will be able to pick it up again.

Check it out, if you havent already. Im a little more than halfway through, and it has been amazing since page one!

message 18921: by Carol (new)

Carol Hello moderati, Banned for Life sounds appealing.

It was REALLY a wonderful read. I love/hate that feeling though - when you have read something by an author that you just LOVE, and are scared to read anything else by them becuase you just know they are gonna mess it all up and make you possibly fall out of love with them...

Well - technically one was an audio book, so that wasn't 'reading'. and AofI and BB were e-books that i was reading at work for at least 2 weeks and just finished this weekend. Deafening was the only 'book' I read.

message 18926: by Bridgit (last edited Mar 30, 2010 08:09AM) (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Forgot to mention what I am reading now - started a collection of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald. So far, they are REALLY good.

Have also gotten through the first chapter of The Bone People by Keri Hulme. This won the Booker prize and is still relatively unheard of in the US I think. Its from a New Zealand author. One chapter in and I am already thinking that I could be blown away by this book. Getting antsy sitting in my chair at work waiting til when I can crack this open again. . .

Has anyone else read this ?

message 18927: by El (new)

El Bridgit, I had a couple different experiences with that book. My freshman year in college, it was one of a handful of books from which we had to choose. I remember one girl specifically who chose it, and I remember her telling me it "changed her life". So I chose it and couldn't get through the first few pages, so I quit and went with The Shipping News instead. I hated that one too, but my professor said it was too late to change - I was like, "Seriously? I'm like the fastest reader ever." Alas, she wouldn't budge.

In any case, I was always sort of intrigued by the Hulme book and told myself since that girl Kacie really dug it, I should check it out. I mean, she was cool, so that must mean the book is cool, right? I graduated college in 2000 and never read it. I finally picked a copy up when I worked at Half-Price Books a few years ago (I took care of the Fiction section, so I kept stumbling across the book), read it, and wound up giving it 3-stars. It was good, I was glad I finally read it. But it didn't change my life. I was made at that Kacie chick for a long time after that. She led me astray.

I'll be curious to see what you think of it now. :)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I started reading The Kite Runner last night, but then Beaded Hope came in the mail and since it's a First Reads win, I decided to read it first. I'm anxious to get back to The Kite Runner, though.

message 18929: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Aw, I misread that as "Bearded Hope" and thought it might be a biography of Kevin Youkilis. I was so excited for a split second.

message 18930: by Carol (last edited Mar 30, 2010 09:40AM) (new)

Carol Several of my friends read it , and I have not as yet read it. It is a book I want to get to soon. I missed a few posts I was talking about The Bone People.
