What are you reading?
Not yet, Carol. I'm about halfway through King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa. Then it's on to The Prince.BTW I saw that link you posted elsewhere about the Texas board of education. Good lord.
Brooke wrote: "I am currently reading Middlesex. I am only over 100 pages into it. I am curious to what everyone thought of this one!"Brooke, I thoroughly enjoyed every page of Middlesex. It's so textured and layered. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on the book once you're done.
Just finished Saving Ceecee Honeycutt: A Novel. 5 stars from me & one of the best books I've ever read!!!~
Shona wrote: "I'm reading Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle. It's the true story of a man, part missionary, part linguist who lives with an Indian tribe cal..."Thanks for sharing this one Shona! It looks like one I would really enjoy!
I have started One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd. I think I may have spoiled it for myself by reading a negative review before I started. I hope not. I am enjoying it so far, but I'm not very deep into it, yet.
After the history book and the super strings book I am planning on reading a book about the H bomb. I will get back to reading novels eventually have pre-ordered Solar by Ian Mcewan and can't wait to get that book !!!
What's this super string book? I've read The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory. On my list is From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Time, sortof related. I dig that stuff.
Chantelle wrote: "Tracy, it's a great book. Don't let the negative review stop you."Absolutely - Enjoy the book...
Just started
Daddy Was the Black Dahlia Killer: The Identity of America's Most Notorious Serial Murderer--Revealed at Last by Janice Knowlton.
Susanna wrote: "The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane"Strange book which was ok for me. I liked the history , but I wish she would have dwelt more with the historical aspects.
Just finished The Writing on My Forehead: A Novel by Nafisa Hajiand am now back to reading The Threadbare Heartby Jennie Nash.
Tracy wrote: "I have started One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd. I think I may have spoiled it for myself by reading a negative review before I started. I hope not. I am enjoying it ..."I read this and really liked it. I hope you will enjoy it too.
Mary wrote: "Chantelle wrote: "Mary said: I'm reading Wench: A Novel and am not loving it. Mary, that's on my TBR list...can you give me some info as to why it's not grabbing you?"
I'm not sure, Chantel..."
I just finished Wench and I liked it. Part I or the first 80 pages it is a bit confusing - too many characters/stories to follow. Part II mainly focuses on one character (Lizzie) after that the book really picked up for me.
Jamaie wrote: "Just finished Saving Ceecee Honeycutt: A Novel. 5 stars from me & one of the best books I've ever read!!!~"The library is holding it for me, picking it up tomorrow so I need to finish Winter Garden tonight!
I am still reading The Screwtape Letters. I am also reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for a buddy read. I am listening to Firefly Lane.
I started yesterday "Watermelon", by Marian Keys. It's the first book I read from this author and I'm loving it!
Chris wrote: "I did like the ending, I think the sequel should be good, the secret speech. Ha..."I didn't even know there was a sequel, have to add that to the queue!
As if I didn't have enough going on, I decided that I would concentrate on reading The Girl with Glass Feet.
Intriguing so far...
Karen wrote: "Finished Friday Night Knitting club--and I am now readingDying to PleaseLinda Howard"
If you liked FNKC, I think you shouold read the 2 sequels, both very good also.
Just finished The Postmistress by Sarah Blake last night and gave it a 5. I loved the way it was divided between America's pre-entry into WWII and the early war in Europe. I recently read, No Ordinary Time by Doris Kearns Goodwin, the story of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and our entry into WWII. The Postmistress reminded me of the feelings expressed on both sides and the lack of understanding (and personal agendas) between the U.S. and Europe at the time.
read Siddhartha in one sitting yesterday. Today I've started By the river Piedra I sat down and wept
I just finish Bloodroot by Amy Greene which is a great book that is dark but I was totally transported even after I got done reading it. It is her first book and she seems to be a very interesting person. Bloodroot
Also I finish Everything Matters!: A Novel which is one of the smartest books that I have read in a long time.
I finished my re-read of Chocolat and will now start Saving Ceecee Honeycutt: A Novel. Many of y'all have loved this so I am really looking forward to it!
Just started Go Down Moses, for a group read in another club. I forgot how funny some of his books are.
carol (akittykat) wrote: "Just started Go Down Moses, for a group read in another club. I forgot how funny some of his books are."Yes Have you read it.. I am just starting it. Uncle Buck is caught by Miss Sibbey
I'm reading The Lady in the Tower by Alison Weir. It's about the fall of Anne Boleyn. I really enjoy Ms. Weir's books, she seems to be a meticulous researcher and whenever possible quotes directly from the papers and letters of witnesses to the events she is describing. She also doesn't go in for any baseless speculation (which can be frustrating in her books about historical figures of whom little is known---Eleanor of Aquitaine for example).Having recently read Wolf Hall, I'm finding Ms. Weir's frequent referrences to Thomas Cromwell especially interesting. So far Ms. Mantel's fictional characterization and Ms. Weir's historical portrayal seem to match up quite well.
I finished Dime Store Magic By Kelley Armstrong today really enjoyed it starting her book Industrial Magic next
I finished After Life by Jaron Lee Knuth and thought it was just okay. There were some good zombie moments, but overall I thought it could've been better. Now, I'm at a lost as to what to read. Too many choices. I'm just going to watch a couple of zombie movies and then get back to it.
Just finished 'Shutter Island' and it was a great read!! I really enjoy Dennis Lehane, especially 'Mystic River' and 'Gone, Baby Gone'.Tomorrow I'll start 'The Dante Club' by Matthew Pearl.
Nearly finished Super Strings and already making a start on the story of the H bomb and the next one after that will be Revolution 1989 the fall of the Soviet Empire. Boy I read some FUN books don't I ?
Ana wrote: "I started yesterday "Watermelon", by Marian Keys. It's the first book I read from this author and I'm loving it!"I enjoyed Watermelon when I read it a few years back. M.K. is good for a "brain candy" for me.
I'm currently read The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. i started reading it last night after it had been sitting on my bookshelf for about 8 months. I figured now was as good a time as any to finally read it.
I'm back to reading The Postmistress by Sarah Blake and am having a really tough time putting the Kindle down...even when it's going on 5am, BUT I have to say there are some parts just achingly sad and I fear there may be more and more substantial sadness to come. Fingers are crossed that I am wrong as I need a good happy or at least satisfying ending.
Jeane wrote: "Ann from S.C. wrote: "Just finished THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and loved it! I am waiting for the next one in the series to come in from th library. Now I am reading FORD COUNTY by John Grisho..."Hi Jeane,
I read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and loved it too. I read The Girl Who Played With Fire (2nd book) and didn't love it as much. It's still very good, but I think Lisbeth Salander is a more interesting character when there's more mystery surrounding her. One of my favorite aspects of the first book is that while she's an integral part of the story, she's an enigma. Her motivations are unknown, so they're fun to think about. When you get into the second book, let me know what you think.
Matthew wrote: "Just finished 'Shutter Island' and it was a great read!! I really enjoy Dennis Lehane, especially 'Mystic River' and 'Gone, Baby Gone'.Tomorrow I'll start 'The Dante Club' by Matthew Pearl."
Matthew...I'm curious about how you like the Dante Club. I picked it up at a book sale a few months ago because it sounded interesting, but I don't know anyone who has read it.
A find of mine in Ireland raved about The Dante Club, but I never read it. Let us know what you think, Matthew!
Jenna wrote: "Matthew wrote: "Just finished 'Shutter Island' and it was a great read!! I really enjoy Dennis Lehane, especially 'Mystic River' and 'Gone, Baby Gone'.Tomorrow I'll start 'The Dante Club' by Mat..."
I'll keep you and F1Wild posted on what I thnk about it for sure.
I'd be interested in thoughts about The Dante Club, too. I read Matthew Pearl's The Poe Shadow: A Novel and wasn't impressed. I'm currently listening to Haunted and don't know what to think about it. The personal stories of each character are interesting and show how damaged these people are. The "present day" story is so weird and unreal and bizarre.
I've started reading Dracula. I'm not far enough along to say much more than that but it has an appealing writing style. Very gothic and phychologically thrilling.
Finished The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane last night. The concept was better than the execution.

I also read Bloodroot. I found it got better as it went along. Worth picking up at library.
Mary wrote: "I finished my re-read of Chocolat and will now start Saving Ceecee Honeycutt: A Novel. Many of y'all have loved this so I am really looking forward to it!"I just finished Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. I loved it. Somewhat like Secret Life of Bees. Will recommend for bookclub.

Alex are you reading The Prince-Niccolò Machiavelli? I just started The Prince Of The Marshes and other occupational hazards of a year in Iraq. It appears to draw on The Prince.
