message 18503: by Tess (new)

Tess | 8 comments As a newbie i had better get on topic...I'm reading Val McDermid's "A Place of Execution" after it was mentioned in my previous read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

Steigg Larsson liked to name drop his favorite authors, i've read...

message 18504: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Oberon also came from the shelter. Yeah, Blues are beautiful cats.

DH...you have your own designated hitter? I should get one of those. That'd be awesome. "See that dude yelling into his cellphone and spilling his stupid latte on me on the subway? Go hit that guy."

i tried really, but i just don't like the characters in the slightest to suffer that much...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I mentioned The Golden Bowl to my mother, one of whose fields was Victorian lit, and she sucked her breath in. LOL

Wow, then that book is most def. going straight to goodwill.

Of course i noticed on your profile that you enjoyed "Bleak House" ... yikes! My eyes glazed over re. the British legal system...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I like Charles Dickens.

message 18510: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Spent the day yesterday at the hospital with my sick hubby, so I finished Greywalker by Kat Richardson. Now I have another urban fantasy series to read.

On to In the Woods by Tana French.

message 18511: by Tess (new)

Tess | 8 comments I want to like Charles Dickens. I really enjoy George Elliot. Great Expectations was too strange for this chick in middle school.

Lyn, In the Woods is my next read.

message 18512: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Frary | 90 comments So I just finished 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and am getting ready to start 'Shutter Island' tomorrow.

I gave 'Dorian Gray' two stars because the story itself was ok, but I found some of the writing a little long-winded.

message 18513: by Carol (new)

Carol Not my favorite Orwell book.

message 18514: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Which Orwell book Carol?

I'm feeling dumb, I've never heard of The Golden Bowl. There's a lot of 5 star reviews for it here. So someone likes it...or pretends to. You guys aren't making me want to run out and pick it up though.

message 18515: by Petra (new)

Petra Dana wrote: "I have read two of these, and like them (maybe 3?) very creative...."

Dana, there are three in the Gretchen Lowell series so far. I'm about 3/4 through the second and should think about reserving the third from the Library very soon.

message 18516: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I've started reading Muriel Barbery's The Elegance of the Hedgehog. The book was recommended to me by my friend and classmate who greatly enjoyed the book. I've only started but it's intriguing so far =)

message 18517: by Shona (new)

Shona (anovelobsession) I'm reading Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle. It's the true story of a man, part missionary, part linguist who lives with an Indian tribe called the Piraha in the Amazon. I'm about half way through and I am enjoying it. A lot of the cultural aspects of the tribe that the author writes about are very interesting, although at times he repeats information. Pretty good book, especially if you are at all interested in the culture and the language of a very isolated tribe in the Amazon.

Chris Peel | 37 comments Dana wrote: I read that a few months ago and loved it. I think at the end you will be very satisfied with it.

I did like the ending, I think the sequel should be good, the secret speech. Have you read it?

Sequel I've just started A Fraction of the Whole and it seems pretty good, even if I only have to think about Stephen Kings It to remember how tedious a long book can get.

message 18520: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Ah, you meant Wilde then, Carol! I loved it.

message 18521: by Carol (new)

Carol Yes It was early in the morning I meant Wilde. LOL

message 18522: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments still no computer, but i should have one by the end of this coming week. woohoo!

anyway, i finished The Little Giant of Aberdeen County yesterday, and i was pleasantly surprised by it. it wasn't excatly what i was expecting, but i loved the main character and enjoyed the story a lot.

not sure what i'll be reading next...i currently have no kitchen and only 25% of a bathroom, and that will decrease to 0% by the end of the day today. my life is not organized right now, and i'm hating it! i need to go find a book to escape in, i think.

message 18523: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Oh man, Maria. You need a book and a flask of whiskey.

It is a sweet book, which i enjoyed. If any have YA around them, they would enjoy it also.

message 18529: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Body Double by Tess Gerritsen and it was great! Reading it really made me look forward to the Rizzoli & Isles tv show. Now I'm going to start The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King.

message 18530: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) I finished "Birthmarked" two days ago. I am currently reading for an upcoming book discussion "The Birth House."

message 18531: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I'm reading "Along Came a Spider". Very suspenseful so far.

Joel (joelevard) Melissa wrote: "Just finished reading Lady Chatterley's Lover, which I really enjoyed. Trying to decide what to start on next; Tiger! Tiger!, Rich Girl, Poor Girl, [book:..."

I just read "Tiger! Tiger!" albeit under its U.S. title, "The Stars My Destination." It's really interesting, especially considering when it was written. Parts of it are a little dated and the dialogue has a stilted quality but I liked it a lot.

message 18533: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 107 comments Just starting Wild West Women by Rosemary Neering, listening to Outlander by Diane G. on my iPod as I commute to and from work and someday I may finish the Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella, which I have as an ebook on my computer. I just never think about it.

message 18534: by Petra (new)

Petra I finished Sweetheart this morning, over coffee. I really enjoyed it and it drew in a sub-story that was in Heartsick. Although the ending to the book is somewhat far-fetched, I still enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the third of the trilogy soon.
I started Birthright: The True Story of the Kidnapping of Jemmy Annesley this afternoon. It's a bit full of detailed, background information in the beginning. I'm hoping the story will start moving ahead a bit more quickly soon.

Lori Ann | 105 comments I'm starting The Sun Also Risesfollowed by East of Eden

message 18536: by Liz (new)

Liz I finished The Iron King yesterday and have been working on Gulliver's Travels and Breaking Dawn.

message 18537: by Aleksandra (new)

Aleksandra (aleksandrakonwa) i finished "shattered dreams" by Irene Spencer. I loved it :) and reading now Kartography by Kamila Shamshie.
I totally give up on "the lost daughter of happines" :(

message 18539: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Frary | 90 comments Paula wrote: "I'm reading "Along Came a Spider". Very suspenseful so far."

It's a very good book. One of my favorite James Patterson books. Always keeps you guessing. Enjoy.

message 18540: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Hey Liz! I read Gulliver's Travels in January. I thought it sortof lost steam as it went, but it's worth it. How're you liking it?

message 18541: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King last night and even though there were a few things that bugged, I thought it was a pretty good and quick read. Now I'm going to start After Life by Jaron Lee Knuth. I'm in the mood for some zombie mayhem...

message 18542: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Started The Woman in White on audio yesterday. It's 25 hours long! I'm about 2 or 3 hours in and really enjoying it so far. I think I'm glad I'm not reading it in print though.

I also finished a couple of graphic novels: Marvel Illustrated: Picture Of Dorian Gray Premiere HC and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Both were really good. Especially the Dark Knight, 5*'s!

message 18543: by Bhumi (new)

Bhumi | 524 comments 25 hours seems like an incredibly long time. What is the average time for a decent-sized audiobook? Usually I just read the hard copies.

message 18544: by Jayme (last edited Mar 14, 2010 11:06AM) (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) They're usually about 30 pages an hour. So most books being about 300 pages long take about 10 hours.

There's my math post in honour of pi day. Happy pi day everyone!

Thanks Matthew, I'm having a real hard time putting it down (Along Came a Spider)!

message 18546: by Carol (last edited Mar 14, 2010 11:12AM) (new)

Carol I just finished the hard copy of The Woman In White. I loved it. Some of the language was a bit dated, but a good book. I ordered Moonstone to read soon.

message 18547: by Liz (new)

Liz Alex wrote: "Hey Liz! I read Gulliver's Travels in January. I thought it sortof lost steam as it went, but it's worth it. How're you liking it?"
I'm enjoying it. At times I get tired of reading all description and zero dialogue, but it's good otherwise.

message 18548: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 44 comments I am currently reading Middlesex. I am only over 100 pages into it. I am curious to what everyone thought of this one!

message 18549: by Becky (new)

Becky (munchkinland_farm) Cutting for Stone by A. Vergese

message 18550: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Brooke, Middlesex is one of my very favorite books ever. I think it's brilliant. We've debated it a bit over on the Thread of Dire Judgment, though; opinions vary widely on that one.
