Mahum: Winter Garden is about the lives of two sisters and their parents. The mom is Russian and has never shown any maternal instinct whatsoever to her children. The Dad loved them unconditionally and showed his love often. The story line is about why the mom is the way she is. I am going to finish it and maybe my opinion will change. I hope so. I loved Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.
I am currently reading Nineteen Minutes. It is pretty good so far. I have read Mercy and My Sister's Keeper in the past. Any other Jodi Picoult recommendations?
I finished THE LACUNA by Barbara Kingsoliver and gave it 2 stars. It was a very hard book to get into. Now am going to try again THE GIRL WITH TEH DRAGON TATTOO. Could no really get into it before.

I really liked Handle With Care and The Perfect Match by her also. And Change of Heart...I love her books....can't wait for her new one to come out on March 2nd!
Finished The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O' Farrell and thought it was a great book and a page-turner, but the ending just fizzled out a bit.I've just picked up 3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows by Ann Brashares. I loved The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants series in high school, so I have high hopes for this one.
Brooke wrote: "I am currently reading Nineteen Minutes. It is pretty good so far. I have read Mercy and My Sister's Keeper in the past. I'd like to read more by her.
I always feel like there's some big ethical question which she leaves for her readers at the end of her novels, never answering it. However, in some cases it almost seems like instead she'll make very strong attempts to manipulate readers' emotions (okay, so I'm mainly thinking of My Sister's Keeper here), so I have a like/dislike relationship with her work (I would say love/hate but that's a bit strong).
Just finished Naked by David Sedaris, which I found alternately hilarious and tedious. Am now reading The House on Mango Street and Twilight to cleanse my palate before doing the Picture of Dorian Gray for the group read.
Just finished A Circle of Souls by Preetham Grandhi! Starting Rabbit: Chasing Beth Rider by Ellen C. Maze!
I just finished A reporters life by Walter Kronkite. I'm now reading Venetia Kelly's traveling show by Frank Delaney. His book Ireland was one of my favorites.
I'm still reading and enjoying The 19th Wife. Its a slow read for me (didn't get to read this past weekend) but its not because its not pulling me in. There are two storylines in the book, one about the founding of the Morman Church and polygamy (and how, even though the early church practiced polygamy, they no longer endorse it in any way)----the second storyline is about a modern day sect that has broken away from the original Morman church and a murder mystery in this sect. Its very good and educational about the foundings of the Latter Day Saints church.
I finished The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detectiveand I really really liked it. She made constant references to Poe, Dickens, Collins etc., all of whom are favorite authors of mine. It was very interesting to see how a true crime influenced many Victorian mystery writers.I am now beginning Breakfast at Tiffany's!
Oh cool, Lori Ann! I put that on my reading list, probably thanks to you, but then someone else said they didn't love it so I decided to wait to hear how you liked it. I love the subject.
Alex wrote: "Congratulations! I get such a feeling of accomplishment after I finish an intimidating read like that.I didn't love the His Dark Materials trilogy - or make it through the whole thing - but hope..."
Thanks :) I do feel like I have accomplished a great deal by finishing that book. And I don't think its gonna be one i will ever re-read lol.
I finally got started on the Dark Materials Trilogy and so far I am really enjoying it altho that could always change.
Finished Sea of Monsters and the Art of Racing in the Rain. Loved Sea of Monsters....can't get enough of Percy Jackson books at the moment. I liked the Art of Racing in the Rain, but didn't love it.Now onto The Titan's Curse!
Brooke wrote: "I am currently reading Nineteen Minutes. It is pretty good so far. I have read Mercy and My Sister's Keeper in the past. Any other Jodi Picoult recommend..."Hi Brooke,
I've got and read all of Picoult's books, there is only a couple that I wasn't too keen on. Handle With Care is very good...The Pact is another that sticks in mind.
Hope that's some help!
I just finished reading the new book by Nancy Pickard, "The Scent of Rain and Lightning." It was a very good read.
Right now, I have about 3.In My Hands (a Holocaust Memoir)
The Girl in the Red Coat (another Holocaust memoir)
Cherishing Our Daughters
Just finished reading Saving Ceecee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman. I really, really liked it. Gave is a 4.5. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It is everybit as delightful as The Help, but different.
Jessica wrote: "I am reading The Alchemyst by Michael Scott."I totally loved the Alchemyst! My son and I both read it and the sequels and are patiently waiting for
The Necromancer in May. I hope you enjoy The Alchemyst!
I started Alice's Adventures in Wonderland / Through the Looking-Glass and was immediately disturbed by the foreword of the book. I am reading it before I go to see the movie. Sort of as a refresher.
Jenna wrote: "Finished Sea of Monsters and the Art of Racing in the Rain. Loved Sea of Monsters....can't get enough of Percy Jackson books at the moment. Oh good! I have this waiting on my Kindle.

Mercy was my least favorite. I loved Salem Falls, The Pact, My Sister's Keeper, and Perfect Match. Plain Truth was also very good. I have her new one on pre-order.

I'm currently reading A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick.I can not say that much about it.I'm only at Chapter 4. Strong opening and really enigmatic. I'm really looking forward to see what happen next.
I've been struggling lately---just haven't hit on a book that really sucks me in. I've abandoned Sarum, read High On Arrival (actually that did suck me in, but was over too quickly) and am now plodding through Speaks the Nightbird, which is good but sort of slow, and too easy to put down. I long for a book that will completely engross me! Luckily I have a ginormous TBR pile...
Last night I finished 3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows by Ann Brashares and I loved it. I thought it was a real sweet YA story. Now I'm reading Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. I'm only in the prologue, but so far it's interesting.

Linda wrote: "Jeane wrote: "I am reading People of the Book and The Book Thief."Jeane:
What a great combo. I loved both books. Enjoy!"
It was by coincidence Linda but they really matched perfectly. I finished People of the Book in the weekend and i love it. It is really so good and fresh, interesting. Still reading The Book Thief which has a very original approach to nazism, WW's, Hitler.....and I am still very curious about what the story will be and how it will go becasue I forgot what the summary said and now I don't want to know because it makes the book even better!
Lori Ann wrote: "I just finished The Reader it was quick and enjoyable. I am now starting The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective!"
I thought this would be very interesting and in the beginning it was. But after a bit it kept repeating and going on and on....

My boyfriend said that it would probably not follow the story.
Hey, I am new to the group. I am reading 'Small Island' by Andrea Levy, I am enjoying it so far! :-)
Hey Jenny go on over to the newbies corner and introduce yourself. . You will get a warm welcome. Welcome and enjoy yourself.
Jeane, sometimes I think my wife puts too much thought into whether books are chick books or boy books. She also refuses to like The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay because she says it's a boy book. *shrug* She's so sexist. Also, re. Dante's Inferno: yeah, I heard the game doesn't follow the book at all. Which is a shame, because a perfectly good game could be made that did follow the book.
I just picked up Little Bee at the library. I will start it in a couple of days. I want to finish The Case Has Altered .
I finshed the amazing Let the Great World Spin - 5 stars. I am now re-reading Chocolat before I start The Girl with No Shadow: A Novel.
