What are you reading?
I read Mistress of the Art of Death and wasn't wildly in love with it either - it probably didn't help that it was sold to me as the best thing since sliced bread.I have The Serpent's Tale but haven't bothered to read it yet.
Marti wrote: "I really really enjoyed Not My Daughter. I think she really nailed the mother-daughter relationship. I think the story makes you step back and reflect on teen's having babies.... The last three ..."Marti, I agree...I have enjoyed all of Delinsky's books that I have read (and there have been many) but her most recent, While My Sister Sleeps, I read in one night...couldn't put it down!
I had started reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog but found it just too much for me. I don't know French so I was looking up probably 4 words per page as she scatters French words into the story and her sentence structure was so complex that her sentences are like 6-8 lines long. It just felt like too much work to me so I gave up after about 25 pages. I think it sounded like an interesting story but by all accounts there were many, many characters to follow and I just didn't have it in me to work that hard at it at this time...maybe later! So I am now reading Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult. I love her and this book is very good so far. I can't wait to go to her book signing in March in the Chicago suburbs, I went last year and thoroughly enjoyed myself!
Dara wrote: "I had started reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog but found it just too much for me. I've loved all of her books I've read so far. Let me know what you think of this one.
I am reading "Willow" By: Julia Hoban. It is a very good book, but somewhat long..but hey its worth it!
After finishing The Last Song and before, The Hunger Games & Catching Fire, I feel as if I don't wanna pick up another 'regular' book. It's like they set up an expectation that I want other books to have... so I'm kinda shaky on what to read next. I thought about reading Anna Karenina by Tolstoy as mentioned in the book, but it's so long and I don't think I'll have the time to read it. Does anyone know if Dear John is a really good one?
Kristine wrote: "Bhumi wrote: "I hope you enjoy The Lightning Thief, Kristine. A lot of people seem to be reading it nowadays. I read it earlier and liked it."Just finished it a few minutes ago and I really liked..."
Great. Hopefully you'll the next few books too.

its a murder mystery novel by James Patterson its about 4 women who come together as friends and through their professions to help solve the murder of newly weds..its the first in the Women's Murder Club novels.. I think there are 8 or 9 books so far..
Kathy wrote: "Dara wrote: "I had started reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog but found it just too much for me. I love JP so I doubt that I won't like it. However, there is athread on another group I am on where it appears not many of them like her much at all. I disagree...but that is the great thing, we can all like different things. It would be very boring if we were all the same!
Right now I'm reading Truly, Madly by Heather Webber, and I was suprised to find that it's actually quite an enjoyable read.
F1Wild - No, I haven't read Stolen Innocence, but it looks really interesting. It's crazy to see the extremes that religion can push people to! Thanks for mentioning it. I've added it to my to-read list. Vonney - I had heard of Under the Banner of Heaven, but never read it. Looks like I will need to pick that one up in the future as well. Thanks for the recommendation!
Bhumi wrote: "Right now I'm reading Truly, Madly by Heather Webber, and I was suprised to find that it's actually quite an enjoyable read."Oh Bhumi...I am glad to hear this. I just won this here on GR a couple days ago!
I just finished Shutter Island and really liked it. Its a real page turner. I had a few questions about it though so I'm going to start a thread on it (with spoilers) - if anyone has read it and can enlighten me on the ending, please go to the thread. Thanks.Next up is Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse).
I have finished The Eight and it was the second treaure wriiten by Katherine Neville. I still adore even more The fire, but this one came very near.
Just started Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I'm amused by it & I've only read the first chapter. It has a fast pace to it with this boy asking so many questions & Wow, the way his mind works...it's hilarious! Yes...I promise...still going to read The Help eventually..LOL
Just finished Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron by Jasper Fforde. It was AMAZINGLY creative and original...loved it, loved it, loved it!!!Now, I'm reading The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova. I heard her recently interviewed on NPR about writing this particular book. So far, so good.
I finished The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum and it was terrible. The book itself was amazing. But the subject matter and the actual events that happened were horrifying. Now I think I'm going to read The Lightning Thief.
Jeane wrote: "I have finished The Eight and it was the second treaure wriiten by Katherine Neville. I still adore even more The fire, but this one came very near."Jeane, I just bought The Eight and plan on reading it soon.

Great! Let me know what you think about it when you read it. At first, I wasn't sure whether it would be good, but it certainly exceeded my expecatations.
Jamaie, Christine, and Diane U.....I really enjoyed Not My Daughter. I thought it was one of Barbara Delinsky's best novels. It is something that could certainly happen to anyone, and the way some of the town treat's one of the mothers is just ridiculous. Let me know what you think of it once you read it.Dara-I'm reading Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult. Just wondering what you thought of it if you've read it. I haven't read Vanishing Acts yet either so curious to hear what you thought of it. I love all of the books that I have read by her. And I think that every high school teacher and student should have to read Nineteen Minutes.....my aunt thought it was too intense, but I thought that it was amazing.
Finished Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. Thought is was pretty good. Kinda dragged in some parts. Now starting Peony in Love by Lisa See. Loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan so I have some high hopes.
I just finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Now I am dipping my toe into War and Peace for a while. I will be reading this one in between some others I have on hold at the library.
Laura wrote: "Now I'm starting The Eye of the Storm by Patrick White and am..."Oh Dear! I've put The Eye of the Storm down. It was really beautifully written. And then??? My mind kept wandering. I'm not sure why and I'm not proud of it, but I put it aside (I'll definitely pick it up when my brain feels ready again) and am now reading Gold Coast by Elmore Leonard. Your mind doesn't wander reading this kind of book!
Ann from S.C. wrote: "I am now reading THE SECRET BRIDE by Diane Haeger about King Henry 8 sister Mary."I really liked that one.
I am just starting Hand of Isis by Jo Graham. I just finished her book Black Ships and really enjoyed it.
Just finished Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. It has been sitting on my TBR shelf for quite some time and just couldn't bring myself to start it. Not certain exactly why, but I finally gave in and am so glad I did. It took me by surprise just how much I really enjoyed this book. I would give it a 4.2.
I decided to put Dead Until Dark back on the shelf and am starting Strange Fits of Passion by Anita Shreve. I haven't read anything by her yet so I'm looking forward to it.
Bhumi wrote: "I hope you enjoy The Lightning Thief, Kristine. A lot of people seem to be reading it nowadays. I read it earlier and liked it."The movie of this book is due out on Feb. 12th.

Over the weekend I started to read, "Everyday Justice" by Julie Clawson. It is opening my eyes to how we are treating some people. I am enjoying it.
Stef wrote: "Started last weekend with The Angel's Game. Beginning is very promising"Love it! Please tell me your thoughts when you are finished!
Chrystal wrote: "Jamaie, Christine, and Diane U.....I really enjoyed Not My Daughter. I thought it was one of Barbara Delinsky's best novels. It is different than many of her other books in ways, but I enjoyed it. I finished Vanishing Acts last night by Jodi Picoult and really liked it. For me her books get me to think how people act or react in situations that most of us armchair quarterback and judge. But she really touches on the true human nature, some of it we don't want to see. Often her theme centers around mothers and the lengths they will go to to protect their children. Makes ya wonder!!
I ordered Not My Daughter on Barnes & Noble.com this weekend...hope to get it in the next couple of days!
Donna wrote: "Finishing up on The Angel's Game and going to start The Elegance of the Hedgehog tonight."Donna, let me know what you think of Elegance of the Hedgehog. I started it last week and just couldn't get into it. It was too much like work for me...I might try it again at a later time, but would be interested in hearing what others think. It is very, very involved...or at least seemed to be in the 25 or so pages I read.
LOL I hear that a lot about the book. I probably wouldn't have even picked it up but it is my work book club read. So far not many people can finish it but I will let you know if I can pull thru!

Yahoo! I hope you like it because the second one was for me even better!
I have just started My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, the February book choice for my local reading group. I have read 30 pages, and I am enjoying it so far.

Kathy, one thing I did like about Adelia was her sarcastic wit (as a sarcastic female myself, I enjoyed and see the use of it) and I am planning on reading The Serpent's Tale since I already own it. Hopefully I'll like that one more.
I just finished The Bird Room by Chris Killen and enjoyed it. I thought the story had great moments and it was definitely a page turner. Now, I'm going to read The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum.
