Beth wrote: "I set aside Last Night in Twisted River A Novel for a few days "I have been read Last Night in Twisted River for a month and a half. This book will be read but it is really slow for me.
Lisa wrote: "I'm almost finished with The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. I'm enjoying this one much more than her first, Garden Spells"I have to agree with you Sugar Queen was better then Garden Spells.
I just finished the book,The Tale of Halcyon Crane written by Wendy Webb. This book was great reading!
Jacqueline wrote: "Just finished Death With Interruptions which I really enjoyed. This was the first book I read by Jose Saramago and I was quite impressed. I got the barnes and nobles..."
Jacqueline, probably one of the better Saramago books to start with. I would like to recommend that you follow it with either Blindness or The Cave...

I usually have about 3/4 books on the go - at the moment this is the case. I have such a short attention span!So at the moment I'm reading Dead To The World by Charlaine Harris - honestly these books are so badly written but sometimes you just need a bit of trash over the holidays. Also:
Lies and the Lying Liars that Tell them - Al (I think) Franken - a left-wing rant
The Forgotten Garden - Kate Morton - I loved House at Riverton and this is just as good
I don't get much time to read over term time (I'm a teacher for my sins) but I'm really trying to read more.
this book i,m reading is awesome cassie edwards she a good writer
Marti and Carol, have you read any of his other books? A Drink Before the War is an unbelievable book too. I highly recommend all of his books.

I had that problem. The book is there, had to go through the author page, The City & The City.
Vanessa I have not to my knowledge. I have books on hold right now, but I will be exploring his other works throughout the year.
Yesterday was a graphic novel day and I read The Sandman Vol. 6 Fables and Reflections and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Vol. 3. And now I'm going to start The Weight of All Things A Novel.
carol (akittykat) wrote: "I bought The Help for Christmas. I will read it soon. " Oh, what a lovely book! I read this one earlier in the year, after meeting Miss Stockett at the Southeastern Independent Booksellers convention in Alabama last September. It is beautifully written and will touch your heart, for sure. One of my top five for 2009!
Happy New Year! I am currently reading A Death in Vienna by Frank Tallis. It was highly recommended by a fellow TNBBC member and I am loving it! Also looking forward to reading The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters which was also highly recommended to me. And no! The holidays are definitely not condusive to reading, but now that things have settled down, I am ready to settle in with my book and mug of hot cocoa. Mmmm....
I finished re-reading Pride and Prejudice and am working on The Vampyre and Other Tales and The Blackwater Lightship. I'll probably start American Pastoral soon.
Loretta wrote: "Happy New year, everyone!I'm about 40 pages into Wideacre. I've really enjoyed the other Philippa Gregory books I've read, but this one is so far not pulling me in. I'll go back at..."
I couldn't finish Wildacre. And I've liked several of Gregory's books. Particularly Virgin Earth.
Jayme wrote: "Yesterday was a graphic novel day and I read The Sandman Vol. 6 Fables and Reflections ..."Jayme, I was interested in The Sandman books, too. My library has all the volumes except Vol. 1!!!! I've put a request in for the purchase of that book. We'll see what happens.
Lori, I started Blindness a few days back but am having a difficult time with the writing style. I hope I get used to it soon. Are all his books written in this run-on sentence style? Does it get better?
In the background I'm reading Ulysses and am finding it surprisingly okay and rather rich in style. I'm not fond of all of the writing styles (Joyce changes styles with each "chapter") but it's intriguing. This isn't a book to read all at once so I'm reading a little bit at a time.
I've also started Wuthering Heights last night. It's really odd and spooky and I'm drawn right in.

While I would have liked additional backstory to better ..."How was the movie? I missed it. Will have to put it on the NetFlix list and see how the movie compares.
Vanessa wrote: "Marti and Carol, have you read any of his other books? A Drink Before the War is an unbelievable book too. I highly recommend all of his books."A co-worker recommended Dennis Lehane and I recently finished A Drink Before the War. It was terrific especially since I had just returned from a trip to Boston.

Petra, yes, all his books are written similarly. I found it awkward at first, but quickly got used to it. Blindness is the perfect book to read first, as the writing style and subject matter go well together. If you can get through it, you will certainly like his others as well.
i finished The Seamstress of Hollywood Boulevard tonight. it wasn't the best book i've read, but it wasn't the worst, either.i just saw that the group read for January is The Gargoyle. i read this in the fall, and i *loved* it. not the fastest or easiest read, but the story was fabulous and very engrossing. one of the better books i read in '09.

It's been years since I read it, but I was also one of those that managed to get through school without being required to read it.
I just finished U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton. It was a good one. A reasonable start for the new year. Now I'm ready to jump into The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt.
Currently reading The Chocolate Mouse Trap by Joanna Carl. I have never read anything by this author before and am interested to see how she writes a cozy mystery.
Vanessa wrote: "Marti and Carol, have you read any of his other books? A Drink Before the War is an unbelievable book too. I highly recommend all of his books."Vanessa, Carol and Donna... Finished the book Shutter Island today - seriously had me twisted!!!OH MY
I have read another one of his books, Mystic River... I will have to keep him name on my list of books to be read!!
Right now reading Changes in Altitude. The book and characters are feeling detached...
I am still chugging away at Ulysses. I will be glad when the day is done for that book. Never ever will I read it again.
I recently finished Shutter Island and it was a very good book but with a very twisted ending. Can't wait to see how the movie turns out. I think I have Mystic River somewhere, I need to pull it out and read that one.I'm currently reading The Ghost Writer by John Harwood.
Renee wrote: "I recently finished Shutter Island and it was a very good book but with a very twisted ending. Can't wait to see how the movie turns out. I also have Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone on my bookshelves. Just
finished Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman at work tonight. Now I don't know what to start, narrowed it down to

I'm finally done and have moved past that into the next episode.

I hope I bought the latter.
I finished the wonderful The Library of Shadows and The Chimes of which I still don't realize what t was about. Finally started The Mists of Avalonand really liking it.
Rachel, you should definitely read the Watchmen next. Killer!Petra wrote: "Jayme, I was interested in The Sandman books, too. My library has all the..."
Sandman is very quickly turning into a favourite of mine. Start reading them anyway, they've been written so you can pick up any one of the volumes and not be lost. Especially the short story ones, like Fables and Reflections, that I just finished, or The Sandman Vol. 03 Dream Country.
