Hehehe on the newborn comments in regards to the puppy. He is my sons, so he is feeling the pain more than I am :)

He's a fawn colored Puggle (more beagle than pug). Very playful! We just spent the last two days cleaning (me, scrubbing the floors on hands on knees; the kids, throwing out lots of broken and old toys to make the playroom 'puppy-proof)....

Loretta Happy New year, everyone!

I'm about 40 pages into Wideacre. I've really enjoyed the other Philippa Gregory books I've read, but this one is so far not pulling me in. I'll go back at this afternoon, but I may actually bail and start something different if I don't get into. I don't do that very often, but I want to be reading something really engaging right now, to start the year off right.

message 17005: by [deleted user] (new)

About 2/3 of the way thru The Reader... interesting, but I'm not sure I can say I like it or not. Loved the beginning, but I'm puzzled by the style switch in the middle...

Also reading I Capture the Castle, which I a really really loving. Thank you Fiona!!

message 17006: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline Quackenbush Just finished Death With Interruptions which I really enjoyed. This was the first book I read by Jose Saramago and I was quite impressed. I got the barnes and nobles nook for Christmas and was disappointed that they dont have anything by him in e-book format (I've been noticing numerous glaring omissions from the available e-books :/ )

Now I'm starting Dracula and it will be the first book read on my new nook which I'm excited about. :)

x-posted

It is a tough book to say you like it but it ended up on my best 10 of the year. Let me know what you think.

Writerlibrarian I'm almost done with a dutch mystery novel. Pieter Aspe Le carré de la vengeance I'm reading it in French and surprisingly good. Didn't expect much and I find myself enjoying it a lot.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I'm reading The Secret History of the Pink Carnation and it was a little touch and go there. I almost stopped reading it like three times, but now it's getting better.

I'm also reading Harry Potter and Philosophy If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts and it's pretty good so far, especially now that I finished my first Philosophy class.

Jacqueline, probably one of the better Saramago books to start with. I would like to recommend that you follow it with either Blindness or The Cave...

message 17022: by Polstar (new)

Polstar I usually have about 3/4 books on the go - at the moment this is the case. I have such a short attention span!
So at the moment I'm reading Dead To The World by Charlaine Harris - honestly these books are so badly written but sometimes you just need a bit of trash over the holidays. Also:
Lies and the Lying Liars that Tell them - Al (I think) Franken - a left-wing rant
The Forgotten Garden - Kate Morton - I loved House at Riverton and this is just as good

I don't get much time to read over term time (I'm a teacher for my sins) but I'm really trying to read more.

Petra Jayme wrote: "Yesterday was a graphic novel day and I read The Sandman Vol. 6 Fables and Reflections ..."

Jayme, I was interested in The Sandman books, too. My library has all the volumes except Vol. 1!!!! I've put a request in for the purchase of that book. We'll see what happens.

Lori, I started Blindness a few days back but am having a difficult time with the writing style. I hope I get used to it soon. Are all his books written in this run-on sentence style? Does it get better?

In the background I'm reading Ulysses and am finding it surprisingly okay and rather rich in style. I'm not fond of all of the writing styles (Joyce changes styles with each "chapter") but it's intriguing. This isn't a book to read all at once so I'm reading a little bit at a time.

I've also started Wuthering Heights last night. It's really odd and spooky and I'm drawn right in.

Petra, yes, all his books are written similarly. I found it awkward at first, but quickly got used to it. Blindness is the perfect book to read first, as the writing style and subject matter go well together. If you can get through it, you will certainly like his others as well.

I watched this when it was on. It made me want to re-read the book, but I can't find my copy. I'm going to have to do some searching. It's been years since I read it, but I was also one of those that managed to get through school without being required to read it.

Renee (pontiacgal501) | 70 comments I recently finished Shutter Island and it was a very good book but with a very twisted ending. Can't wait to see how the movie turns out. I think I have Mystic River somewhere, I need to pull it out and read that one.

I'm currently reading The Ghost Writer by John Harwood.
