What are you reading?

Fahrenheit 451 is going to be on TCM tonight. I'm going to try and watch it. I've already read the book.

I'm about 40 pages into Wideacre. I've really enjoyed the other Philippa Gregory books I've read, but this one is so far not pulling me in. I'll go back at this afternoon, but I may actually bail and start something different if I don't get into. I don't do that very often, but I want to be reading something really engaging right now, to start the year off right.
About 2/3 of the way thru The Reader... interesting, but I'm not sure I can say I like it or not. Loved the beginning, but I'm puzzled by the style switch in the middle...
Also reading I Capture the Castle, which I a really really loving. Thank you Fiona!!

Now I'm starting Dracula and it will be the first book read on my new nook which I'm excited about. :)

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is one of my favorite books ever. I loved One Hundred Years of Solitude as well, hope you enjoy them!

It is a tough book to say you like it but it ended up on my best 10 of the year. Let me know what you think.

Cathy:
I listened to The Hiding Place and agree totally with you on how great a book it is. Another (if you haven't already read it) is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.

Beth:
I think you will love The Help. Kathryn Stockett was at the Southern Book Festival this past October and she was quite informative and a delightful speaker.

I finished Marley & Me Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan, which was an excellent read. Now I'm onto A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle. Very good so far! :)

I'm also reading Harry Potter and Philosophy If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts and it's pretty good so far, especially now that I finished my first Philosophy class.

I have been read Last Night in Twisted River for a month and a half. This book will be read but it is really slow for me.

I have to agree with you Sugar Queen was better then Garden Spells.

Jacqueline wrote: "Just finished Death With Interruptions which I really enjoyed. This was the first book I read by Jose Saramago and I was quite impressed. I got the barnes and nobles..."
Jacqueline, probably one of the better Saramago books to start with. I would like to recommend that you follow it with either Blindness or The Cave...

So at the moment I'm reading Dead To The World by Charlaine Harris - honestly these books are so badly written but sometimes you just need a bit of trash over the holidays. Also:
Lies and the Lying Liars that Tell them - Al (I think) Franken - a left-wing rant
The Forgotten Garden - Kate Morton - I loved House at Riverton and this is just as good
I don't get much time to read over term time (I'm a teacher for my sins) but I'm really trying to read more.
this book i,m reading is awesome cassie edwards she a good writer

a side note: has anyone read The C..."
I had that problem. The book is there, had to go through the author page, The City & The City.

Also looking forward to reading The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters which was also highly recommended to me. And no! The holidays are definitely not condusive to reading, but now that things have settled down, I am ready to settle in with my book and mug of hot cocoa. Mmmm....

I couldn't finish Wildacre. And I've liked several of Gregory's books. Particularly Virgin Earth.

Jayme, I was interested in The Sandman books, too. My library has all the volumes except Vol. 1!!!! I've put a request in for the purchase of that book. We'll see what happens.
Lori, I started Blindness a few days back but am having a difficult time with the writing style. I hope I get used to it soon. Are all his books written in this run-on sentence style? Does it get better?
In the background I'm reading Ulysses and am finding it surprisingly okay and rather rich in style. I'm not fond of all of the writing styles (Joyce changes styles with each "chapter") but it's intriguing. This isn't a book to read all at once so I'm reading a little bit at a time.
I've also started Wuthering Heights last night. It's really odd and spooky and I'm drawn right in.

I'm listening to "Blindness" now and it's been good so far. It's a first for me by Saramago but won't be my last.

How was the movie? I missed it. Will have to put it on the NetFlix list and see how the movie compares.

A co-worker recommended Dennis Lehane and I recently finished A Drink Before the War. It was terrific especially since I had just returned from a trip to Boston.

I ended up missing it! LOL Guess I'll do the Netflix for it also.
Petra, yes, all his books are written similarly. I found it awkward at first, but quickly got used to it. Blindness is the perfect book to read first, as the writing style and subject matter go well together. If you can get through it, you will certainly like his others as well.

i just saw that the group read for January is The Gargoyle. i read this in the fall, and i *loved* it. not the fastest or easiest read, but the story was fabulous and very engrossing. one of the better books i read in '09.

I watched this when it was on. It made me want to re-read the book, but I can't find my copy. I'm going to have to do some searching. It's been years since I read it, but I was also one of those that managed to get through school without being required to read it.

Now I'm ready to jump into The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt.

Vanessa, Carol and Donna... Finished the book Shutter Island today - seriously had me twisted!!!OH MY
I have read another one of his books, Mystic River... I will have to keep him name on my list of books to be read!!
Right now reading Changes in Altitude. The book and characters are feeling detached...

He's a fawn colored Puggle (more beagle than pug). Very playful! We just spent the last two days cleaning (me, scrubbing the floors on hands on knees; the kids, throwing out lots of broken and old toys to make the playroom 'puppy-proof)....
