I'm just starting
for my face-to-face group. Probably won't get much reading time until tomorrow though.

I just finished Pride and Prejudice. Wish I would have read it sooner - I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wanted to read a classic this year and finished it just in time! I am now going to start The Scarpetta Factor as my first book of 2010.
Joan wrote: "okay so i read Eternal and i need to know if eternal is the sequeal to Tantilize?"Joan, I've never heard of the books or the author, but a quick search on Goodreads shows Eternal is the second book in what looks like a series? Click the link for more info - it says on the page that it's #2. Hope that helps. Link: Eternal
Still reading Boris Akunin's The Winter Queen and recently started Sarah Waters' Tipping the Velvet as well. The latter is so far much more enjoyable than the former.
I just finished reading the The Hiding Place. It is an amazing story!!! Corrie Ten Bloom helps the Jews in Holland escape Nazi persecution. With the guidance of her beliefs in christianity she sets up an underground network in her families watch shop. Unfortunately they get caught and sent to a concentration camp. This is a powerful story!! If you love books on WWII you will love this book.
Finished The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz and despite my being concerned that it might be a bit difficult to read as I have already read the second in the series (Curse of the Spellmans) it really wasn't. Enjoyed this one as much as the second one, will most definitely pick up the next in the series.
Now onto From Dead to Worse (Sookie Stackhouse #8). I'm only 100 pages in and already liking it though I don't think it will be my favorite of the series.

Lauren wrote: "Just finished Truly, Madly by Heather Webber! Loved it! Now I think I will start... Either Shutter Island or Her Fearful Symmetry. Both Christmas gifts! Tough decision! "Shutter Island is awesome!
Happy New Year! I spent the whole switch-a-roo playing Wii Sports with a friend so I will probably stay in bed tomorrow and start The Chronicles Of Narnia.

So far, I like it a lot. It had some nice and unexpected twist. Nearly done, I am not sure why people don't like it. Give it a try!
Jessica, please let me know what you think about Everything is Illuminated. I loved EL&IC, and have heard mixed reviews on this one....(I own it, but havent been drawn to start it).....
Happy New Year everyone! I am still making my way through Chronic City, the holidays just ARE NOT condusive to reading, are they? Add to that the fact that we bought my oldest son a puppy a few days ago, and oh-my! I havent read more than a paragraph in daysssss.....

I started The Lovely Bones today. The first chapter was kind of hard for me to read. I didn't expect it to start off like that so quickly.
Halfway through The Girl with the Dragon TattooIncredible book.
Looking forward in reading the other two of the Millennium Trilogy.
I am currently reading The Secret of Lost Things. To comment on a few posts:
I loved The Lovely Bones. It is sometimes a difficult read but it is a great book.
I read Her Fearful Symmetry. I would give it a 3 1/2 stars. Good, very different, but predictable.
Loved The Help. Probably the best book that I read in 2009.
Happy New Year, everyone! I'm still reading Last Night in Twisted River A Novel by John Irving and I just started reading The Glass Palace by Amitav Ghosh. I keep hearing good things about The Help by Kathryn Stockett so I'm looking forward to reading it soon.
Lori, yay for new puppies! What a great gift! What kind of dog did he get?Today I'm starting The Riddle of the Sands A Record of Secret Service by Erskine Childers to read when we go out of town for the next couple days. Tipping the Velvet is hardcover, bulky, and simply not coming in the car. Sadly, though, because I am enjoying it.
Jennifer wrote: "I started The Lovely Bones today. The first chapter was kind of hard for me to read. I didn't expect it to start off like that so quickly."It's a good book. It was kinda of hard for me also, what a harsh and sad beginning. Hope you enjoy it, don't to spoil it for you.

Half Broke Horses was a really different read compared to The Glass Castle (IMO). I'll be interested in what you think.

Happy New Year Everyone!! I stayed up late to finish The Temptation of the Night Jasmine. I think I am going to read Shutter Island next. Everyone has given it such great reviews.
I recently finished Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Somehow I escaped the school system without having ever read it. While I would have liked additional backstory to better appreciate what the main character was going through, it was a pretty good and easy read (with plenty to mull over). It is eerie how a book written more than fifty years ago can still seem futuristic as well as hit so close to home.Brielle - I see that you are also reading Fahrenheit 451. I will be interested to learn what you think of it when you finish.
Next up is Stendhal's The Red and the Black.
Congratz on the new puppy Lori. Isn't it like having a newborn again? LOL Today I am starting Wuthering Heights.
Still trudging through Complete Illustrated Novels by Jane Austen. Emma, Lady Susan, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility.. About a third of the way through Mansfield Park there. I'll be starting Ulysses and The Gargoyle later today.
just finished The Parting from Beverly Lewis. i always enjoy her books, they aren't real heavy reading but they do make you thin and appreciate things.a side note: has anyone read The City & The City? i tried putting it on my TBR list here, but for some reason i can't find it in the goodreads database. anyone else have that difficulty? did i do something incorrectly?
Hehehe on the newborn comments in regards to the puppy. He is my sons, so he is feeling the pain more than I am :)
He's a fawn colored Puggle (more beagle than pug). Very playful! We just spent the last two days cleaning (me, scrubbing the floors on hands on knees; the kids, throwing out lots of broken and old toys to make the playroom 'puppy-proof)....

Recently finished Poison Study, The Ha-Ha A Novel, and The Boy Next Door A Novel. Gave each a 4-star ratings, for different reasons. Now I'm reading Serena A Novel and I can't put it down :-)

Happy New year, everyone!I'm about 40 pages into Wideacre. I've really enjoyed the other Philippa Gregory books I've read, but this one is so far not pulling me in. I'll go back at this afternoon, but I may actually bail and start something different if I don't get into. I don't do that very often, but I want to be reading something really engaging right now, to start the year off right.
About 2/3 of the way thru The Reader... interesting, but I'm not sure I can say I like it or not. Loved the beginning, but I'm puzzled by the style switch in the middle...
Also reading I Capture the Castle, which I a really really loving. Thank you Fiona!!

Just finished Death With Interruptions which I really enjoyed. This was the first book I read by Jose Saramago and I was quite impressed. I got the barnes and nobles nook for Christmas and was disappointed that they dont have anything by him in e-book format (I've been noticing numerous glaring omissions from the available e-books :/ )Now I'm starting Dracula and it will be the first book read on my new nook which I'm excited about. :)

I listened to The Hiding Place and agree totally with you on how great a book it is. Another (if you haven't already read it) is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.

I think you will love The Help. Kathryn Stockett was at the Southern Book Festival this past October and she was quite informative and a delightful speaker.
Happy New Years everyone. :) I finished Marley & Me Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan, which was an excellent read. Now I'm onto A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle. Very good so far! :)
Linda, thanks! I think I'll love The Help, too. It definitely sounds like my kind of book. You're so lucky to have gotten to listen to her speak in person. I heard her interviewed on NPR and I enjoyed listening to her.
I'm almost done with a dutch mystery novel. Pieter Aspe Le carré de la vengeance I'm reading it in French and surprisingly good. Didn't expect much and I find myself enjoying it a lot.
I'm reading The Secret History of the Pink Carnation and it was a little touch and go there. I almost stopped reading it like three times, but now it's getting better.I'm also reading Harry Potter and Philosophy If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts and it's pretty good so far, especially now that I finished my first Philosophy class.
