What are you reading?
I really had high hopes for "The Lovely Bones" but I ended up hating it! Just one woman's opinion...
I set aside Last Night in Twisted River A Novel for a few days so I can read The Lacuna A Novel by Barbara Kingsolver
Meredith wrote: "I really had high hopes for "The Lovely Bones" but I ended up hating it! Just one woman's opinion..."I can't say I hated it but I really disliked it. (that makes it 2 women's opinion......)
I finished Visions of Sugar Plums now I'm reading Skipping Christmas. I laughed through Visions of Sugar Plums. :~)

I just don't know how to read without asking certain questions when reading YA.

The movie was written VERY CLOSELY to the book... they compliment each other very well!

Started A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare 1599, by James Shapiro, last night (early Christmas present). Interesting thus far.
I just got done reading The Hunger Games - I know it's the read for January, but it was up next in my list...I have to say that I absolutely LOVED the book - highly recommend having the next one in the series, Catching Fire on hand when you are finished. I don't have that one yet and I'm so wishing I did!Anyway, not sure what to read next - I may just wait until I see what I get for Christmas before starting anything today.
I just finished reading "The Christmas Jars" Jason Wright. I really enjoyed this heartwarming book. Now I'm reading "Going Rogue" Sarah Palin.
My books came today The Help, Wolf Hall and The Great World Spin. My books came from the library also, The Gate At The Stairs and The Daughter In Time. Sooooooo I will be reading .

I'm loving it so far. My mom and a few Goodreads friends told me I would like it...and they were soooooo right!!!
I just finshed The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets. I loved it and highly recommend it.Wuthering Heights is next up.
Happy Holidays all!
I finished Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. I'm starting on Dangerous Games by Lora Leigh (totally in another style) and hoping to finish this month ATWi80 challenge part with Girl with a Pearl Earring.

What did you think of Kafka on the Shore?
I'm almost done with The Deep End of the Ocean.

I finished Gilead and I really enjoyed it ! It was a lovely meditative story . Perfect for the holiday season ! I'll choose my next book after I find out what my Xmas prezzies are , lol ! I KNOW I'll be getting at least one book OR giftcard !
Along with the Boris Akunin book I started recently, I just started Family by J. California Cooper today. Someone here in TNBBC keeps raving about it, so let the record show your recommendation did not fall on blind eyes! Read the first chapter this morning on the bus - so far so good, but I'm having trouble keeping in mind that I'm not reading Beloved. Feels very similar to me.

Wuthering Heights was slow for me to get through, but I really enjoyed it. I've put it on my to be read again list.
Just put The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets, The Gargoyle and The Hunger Games on hold at the library. I finished reading And Never Let me Go which I didn't care that much for, thought it was kinda slow and boring. I finished reading John Grisham's Ford County last night, not his best by far.

Just finished Wuthering Heights and really enjoyed it :)Now I'm on Death With Interruptions by Jose Saramago.
The synopsis is really intriguing:
"On the first day of the new year, no one dies. This of course causes consternation among politicians, religious leaders, morticians, and doctors. Among the general public, on the other hand, there is initially celebration -— flags are hung out on balconies, people dance in the streets. They have achieved the great goal of humanity: eternal life.
Then reality hits home —- families are left to care for the permanently dying, life-insurance policies become meaningless, and funeral parlors are reduced to arranging burials for pet dogs, cats, hamsters, and parrots.
Death sits in her chilly apartment, where she lives alone with scythe and filing cabinets, and contemplates her experiment: What if no one ever died again? What if she, death with a small d,became human and were to fall in love?"
He has some oddities with punctuation that might bug me though, so we'll see.

Jacqueline, Saramago is my favorite author! And this is one of my favorite novels by him! Have you read any of his other novels?
As for me, I have just finished Last Night on Twisted River. I posted my 4 star review here, as well as on my blog - http://thenextbestbookblog.blogspot.com
I am about to start Chronic City by Lethem.

Neil Gaiman was a very entertaining reader and made the characters stand out and a lot of fun. Giving them a voice seemed to make it more real and most of the distractions were lost on me as a result.
If you have access to audiobooks, they're defintitely worth thinking about as another avenue if you don't think the book would work for you, rather than miss out on the story completely! Susanna.

Nope; I've had my eye on him for a while since all of his stories seem really intriguing, but this is the first one I've gotten to reading :)

I liked Kafka on the Shore as well, although it was probably one of the weirdest reading experiences that I ever had. :)

Well, I'm still plugging away on Under the Dome by Stephen King. I'm about halfway finished now. Its a really good book and is keeping me turning the pages. I'll have more time to sit down and finish it once the holidays are over.I'm thinking of reading Shutter Island next in time for the movie.
Merry Christmas everyone!!!I'm so excited b/c I'm on break from college which means tons and tons of time to read my OWN books! Not the ones assigned in class.
So, first up is the new Juliet Marillier book Heart's Blood. I'm excited because I *always* love her books.
My brother is also making me read Lone Survivor The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 I've heard good things, and I'm hoping that I enjoy it even though it's non-fiction (not one of my favorite genres)
Also on my list are: The Lovely Bones, The Magicians, and The Book Thief

I haven't made my acquaintance with audiobooks yet. They do sound like an option, especially if I can find YA audiobooks. I'm not sure if our library has any but I should probably check one out if I get a chance. Thanks for the tip, though. :)
Just finished Bone by Bone by Carol O'Connell. While GR ratings don't allow for points beyond/between numbers I'd say it was a 3.85. If you want a book that will keep you guessing until the end "who dunnit", this is the one for you.
Almost finished with A Gate At The Stairs. It is a very good book. Next up A Daughter In time.Still reading Ulysses in the background.
I am starting "Storms" by Carol Ann Harris, just finished "Tweak"by Nik Sheff, which I gave to my mother and warned her ahead of time it is a harsh read and poorly written but I Couldn't put it down.
I'm reading Marnie by Winston Graham (a christmas present). I'm very familiar with the Hitchcock film, and it has always been a favourite of mine. So far I'm enjoying it - it has a sparse, to-the-point style which is definitely more cutting than any embellished fiction would be.
Clare, When Will There... is a great book. I hoep you liek it as much as I did :-)

I finished Sand Sharks tonight and an starting 1000 White Women next! And then onto my Christmas Surprises for books to read!! Thanks Santa!
Claire wrote: "When Will There Be Good News? A Novel - Kate Atkinson"I want to read this but should I read the previous two books first?
I am trying, for the second time, to read Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. The book soooo hard for me to get into; mostly because I feel like I already know what's going to happen and I'm not even halfway through.Ugh.
I just finished The Sandcastle by Iris Murdoch - not my favourite of hers, but I really liked it. And since I can't sleep, I'm picking up the next book I brought home with me for Christmas vacation, The Bone People. I visited New Zealand a couple of years ago, and my trip included a visit to the author's home town, so this book has been on my to read list ever since. Looking forward to it.

I'll jump in here for a sec...yes, I think it's probably a good idea to read the other two first. Case Histories was great though, so that's good.

I finished Eclipse last night so I'm going to work on Pride and Prejudice and The Blackwater Lightship.
I started reading Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters which has been sitting on my shelf since my birthday xD Talk about sea monster mayhem! =P
Started Eiffel's Tower And the World's Fair Where Buffalo Bill Beguiled Paris, the Artists Quarreled, and Thomas Edison Became a Count last night. Very good so far.
Susanna wrote: "Started Eiffel's Tower And the World's Fair Where Buffalo Bill Beguiled Paris, the Artists Quarreled, and Thomas Edison Became a Count last night. Very good so far."I think that is the longest book title I have ever seen. Why write the book the title says it all. hahhahahaahaha
