The idea behind the book is awesome. Original and funny, but the all too human parts are a bit depressing. It's certainly worth a look.

Janet Fogg I'm just getting ready to start The Time Traveler's Wife. Have been looking forward to it!

message 16758: by Petra (new)

Petra I just finished The Complete Maus over the past week. It's my first graphic novel and I thought it was marvelous! The words and graphics work well together to bring out the emotions and details of the story. These particular books (Maus I & II) are wonderful. Maus I tells the story before being taken to Auschwitz and Maus II, which is much harder to read due to it's subject matter, continues the story in the Concentration Camp to the end of the war. Very poignant.

I haven't started a new book yet. I am continuing with Ulysses as a "background" book and am thinking of starting Bad Monkeys soon.

message 16759: by Carol (new)

Carol Yeah Mr. Joyce is far in my background. I want to finish The Physick Of Deliverance Dane. Then start Wuthering height for the other group read.

I loved Suite Francaise. One (among many) of the things that amazed me was that this book was buried for so long. I was also intrigued with what people determined to take with them. Hope you enjoy it.

message 16773: by Dan (last edited Dec 21, 2009 09:24AM) (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Started Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore Saturday night. This is my seventh by him in the past month or so. Read Coyote Blue - my favorite Moore so far - first, followed by A Dirty Job and The Stupidest Angel A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror. I knew by then that I'll read all of Moore's books and I'd noticed that his characters tend to pop in and out of subsequent books so I decided to read the rest in the order they were published. It's been interesting and I figure that several of the people who are couples in Stupidest Angel become so in the second half of Lust Lizard. Also, I was doing a little research on Moore and his books yesterday and discovered that some themes and scenes are based on Shakespeare. I really need to read more than just Romeo and Juliet. Maybe Works of Shakespeare for a 2010 goal.

Sadie I'm currently trying to read Wicked for the third time. Each time I get one section further and this time I have promised myself to actually finish it.

Dan | 2 comments I have just finished reading 'Tigers' Secret' by Gordon Volke. It's a fast-paced read set in Asia, in which a young girl called Asha must complete find a missing artefact in order to save humankind from extinction. The best bit about the books is the internet site which enables you to travel around Asia with the heroine (using the site's GeoLocator function). I would thoroughly recommend this book (it's part of a seven book series) and the first title in the series, which is called Orcas' Song.

I'm about to start The Hound of Death by Agatha Christie, a selection of short stories. I don't think Poirot or Marple feature, sadly.

Kirstin, I have Suite Francais to start, and I attempted to read it on holiday but it wasn't that sort of read at all. Let us know how you get on with it.

Which one will follow....

I am currently reading (and almost done with) The Lost Symbol. I was up almost all night reading it (I got a couple hours sleep--closed my eyes around 5:30 a.m.). Of course I am about ready to crash and burn right now!

I just finished reading it and I thought it was pretty enjoyable! Learned a bit about 20th century Greek history, leprosy and life in a small Cretan town. Hope you get to read it sometime! =D

Now that I'm done reading Hislop's book, am now focusing on Steve Berry's The Paris Vendetta A Novel. Am about halfway through and it's pretty intriguing =D

message 16797: by Loretta (new)

Loretta I'm reading The Child in Time by Ian McEwan, and really liking it. It likely won't end up being my favourite of his - hard to beat Enduring Love for that - but as usual, his language and characters are drawing me in.

Jacqueline Quackenbush Janet wrote: "I'm just getting ready to start The Time Traveler's Wife. Have been looking forward to it! "

I really loved that book. It's a little difficult in the beginning, you have to get used to the idea of how the time travelling works and such, but once you "get it" it really is an awesome read.

Hope you enjoy it!

message 16800: by Petra (last edited Dec 22, 2009 07:32AM) (new)

Petra I started Portnoy's Complaint. It's humerous but I'm not sure where the story is going yet.

I've also started listening to Running with Scissors A Memoir on my commute. What an odd upbringing for a child!!! I read his brother's memoir a few years back and thought that their parents were people who really needed help. They both (the kids) seem to have come out of it okay, though.

In the background, I'm also reading Ulysses, which is a very strange book. Each chapter is written in a different style. I've just finished a "stream of consciousness" chapter and have got to say that I'm not a fan. Sounds a lot like gibberish. Glad I'm finished with that chapter.
