Kirsten:

I loved Suite Francaise. One (among many) of the things that amazed me was that this book was buried for so long. I was also intrigued with what people determined to take with them. Hope you enjoy it.

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 109 comments I'm reading The Battersea Park Road to Enlightenment by Isabel Losada. It's not at all what I thought it was going to be, but so far I'm really enjoying it.

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Started Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore Saturday night. This is my seventh by him in the past month or so. Read Coyote Blue - my favorite Moore so far - first, followed by A Dirty Job and The Stupidest Angel A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror. I knew by then that I'll read all of Moore's books and I'd noticed that his characters tend to pop in and out of subsequent books so I decided to read the rest in the order they were published. It's been interesting and I figure that several of the people who are couples in Stupidest Angel become so in the second half of Lust Lizard. Also, I was doing a little research on Moore and his books yesterday and discovered that some themes and scenes are based on Shakespeare. I really need to read more than just Romeo and Juliet. Maybe Works of Shakespeare for a 2010 goal.

message 16758: by Sadie (new)

Sadie I'm currently trying to read Wicked for the third time. Each time I get one section further and this time I have promised myself to actually finish it.

Dan | 2 comments I have just finished reading 'Tigers' Secret' by Gordon Volke. It's a fast-paced read set in Asia, in which a young girl called Asha must complete find a missing artefact in order to save humankind from extinction. The best bit about the books is the internet site which enables you to travel around Asia with the heroine (using the site's GeoLocator function). I would thoroughly recommend this book (it's part of a seven book series) and the first title in the series, which is called Orcas' Song.

I'm about to start The Hound of Death by Agatha Christie, a selection of short stories. I don't think Poirot or Marple feature, sadly.

Kirstin, I have Suite Francais to start, and I attempted to read it on holiday but it wasn't that sort of read at all. Let us know how you get on with it.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I am so glad that I let the cover of The Olive Readers lead me to the backcover where i found keywords like smuggling of books, secret library.. and that this made me buy the book. I read the book in one day and loved it!

Which one will follow....

I loved The Secret Life of Bees. It was excellent.

I am currently reading (and almost done with) The Lost Symbol. I was up almost all night reading it (I got a couple hours sleep--closed my eyes around 5:30 a.m.). Of course I am about ready to crash and burn right now!

Now that I'm done reading Hislop's book, am now focusing on Steve Berry's The Paris Vendetta A Novel. Am about halfway through and it's pretty intriguing =D

message 16781: by Loretta (new)

Loretta I'm reading The Child in Time by Ian McEwan, and really liking it. It likely won't end up being my favourite of his - hard to beat Enduring Love for that - but as usual, his language and characters are drawing me in.

Jacqueline Quackenbush Janet wrote: "I'm just getting ready to start The Time Traveler's Wife. Have been looking forward to it! "

I really loved that book. It's a little difficult in the beginning, you have to get used to the idea of how the time travelling works and such, but once you "get it" it really is an awesome read.

Hope you enjoy it!

message 16784: by Petra (last edited Dec 22, 2009 07:32AM) (new)

Petra I started Portnoy's Complaint. It's humerous but I'm not sure where the story is going yet.

I've also started listening to Running with Scissors A Memoir on my commute. What an odd upbringing for a child!!! I read his brother's memoir a few years back and thought that their parents were people who really needed help. They both (the kids) seem to have come out of it okay, though.

In the background, I'm also reading Ulysses, which is a very strange book. Each chapter is written in a different style. I've just finished a "stream of consciousness" chapter and have got to say that I'm not a fan. Sounds a lot like gibberish. Glad I'm finished with that chapter.

For me, it seems to take longer to read a YA novel than, say, a historical novel. But I try to read YA every once in a while despite it not really being my genre but there's always the chance I might like what I read so I don't rule any genre out.

Young Adult being not something I read regularly, I'm not sure how it would have read for me as an actual book or whether it would have still kept my interest, but I found the audiobook version highly entertaining.

I'm new to YA, too. I do find some of it entertaining and enjoyed the audio version of The Graveyard Book. However, the books are "young" and they don't draw me in like an adult novel does. They aren't meant to, though, as they are for another age group. I recognize which ones I would have thoroughly enjoyed as a kid and those get a higher rating.

message 16797: by Kate (new)

Kate | 119 comments I think certain things distract me in young adult books even though I try not to let it, especially if some of it can be quite simple(as they can be for that age group), or if it has larger font. But if the audiobook has a great reader, you can be swept away with the performance and the characters take on a life of their own. They don't have some of the distractions that reading the actual book might present.
If anyone finds YA books hard to get into, check out the audiobook version.
