What are you reading?
So, Logan...you should definitely reread the Finn/Sawyer books now that you're older. I am loving every minute of HF because there are so many things I've forgotten that it almost feels like a new read...but a new read that you already know you won't be disappointed with. Does that make sense??I remember WAAAAY more about TS, but I still think I'll have to pick it up again soon while I'm going through this Twain-mania or it will wear off and it will be years before I go there again.
Cynthia, I missed 3 days. It took me well over an hour to catch up.
Charity, that's actually a pretty good idea. I reread Twain pretty religiously, especially his Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc and
A Tramp Abroad
(which number as two of my all-time favorites), but for some reason have avoided Finn/Sawyer. I think I'm allergic to acclaim.
Jen and I are now looking to pick up
The Diaries of Adam and Eve
so you can get in on the mania with us. :)
Charity, I loved The Diaries! I used to do a dual interpretation piece based on them in speech competitions when I was in High School. Have you ever read Letters From Earth? It's a series of letters written by Satan after his banishment. They're hilarious and biting in the way that the best satire is.
Who wrote Letters From Earth?
Logan, that sounds very similar in theme to the novel I, Lucifer by GLen Duncan..... Except instead of letters, we are reading first hand what the Devil is doing on earth in human form! It was an interesting, peculiar read.

I just left for lunch...Lunch! 1 hour and came back to find new posts in 16 different threads! Not even 16 posts, but 16 threads. haha... i even took the time to completely read all new posts before i left. How in the world do people keep up if they cant review at work. I'm scared for my next all day meeting! haha..
TIsha, Im totally lost on the weekends. for three full days I have no internet access and when i get home, i can barely keep my eyes open long enough to manage to catch up on a couple threads..... so happy i have weekdays off :)
Oh my GOD! 131 new posts just in this thread since yesterday morning! Wow, how would I ever keep up?Boof, Lori - thanks I change my hair style every three-six months and it was time, I'm glad you guys like it, my husband nearly had a tantrum, he was fond of the long style, it'd grow again in time ... he he he
The new 'do looks good, Lorena. That's funny, my wife had long hair for a while and I would tell her, "Don't cut it short, it looks great long." Then she did and she looked great..haha. I'm all bark..lol
Well damn!!I have a supposedly Complete Short Stories of Marc Twain but no Letters from Earth in it!Not so complete!Well another added to the wishlist.I loved The Diary of Adam and Eve and have now pulled out another book from the bunch that are supposed to be packed away.I'm driving my hubbie nuts.
Ditto on the 'do Lorena, though at first I thought oh-oh we have another Lorena.Things are going to get complicated!
ok ok the diary of adam and eve is going into my TBR list. my list has grown tenfold since i joined..haha
Thanks guys! I went from blonde to ash brunette and from long shaggy to square bob... Split personality problems. LOL
I'm trying Charity! You guys are hard to keep up with.
Linda:
Yes, I have found myself concentrating on one book. I usually read a classic to my son, which right now is Treasure Island. But I am concentrating most on Love in Time of Cholera. It is really good.

Does anybody else feel a sense of stress and pressure with the growing "to-read" list? I sincerely feel like I need to read all of these books and there are way too many! I'm with Lori - I can't ever die and when I do, there better be books in the afterlife. Lorena - I LOVE the new look. I used to do similar dramatic things - black bob with dark red lips or blonde with neutral make-up. I was once accused of being a spy at a former employer. It's kind of fun! I'm happy with my "mom" look now, but some wigs would be perfect!
Every time I think of the Thoreau quote I get extremely depressed..."Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all."
Jen, I know what you mean about the cloud hanging over my head of all the books yet to be read. (Whoa, cool poem.)Maybe that explains why I have yet to make my "t-read" list here on GR. According to my profile, I don't have any that I want to read. I just can't face having a "to-read" list longer than my "read" list.
Ha!!! I like to think I'll be reincarnated into someone who is independently wealthy that has a tremendous library and nothing but time to read all day. Either that or a bookmark. :-)
I can't think about the books that I won't get to... it's depressing!I love your bookmark comment Charity! :o)
As long as I don't get stuck in some dogeared copy of Twilight for all eternity, I'll be happy. Or heaven forbid, The Lovely Bones. Or wait, The Da Vinci Code. Come to think of it, I'd be too much of a snob to be a bookmark. :-)
Holy cow! Scooby Doo is on in the background and they are in 'Mark Twain country' going to the 'Tom Sawyer Festival'. Ha ha.
So after finishing a somewhat dissatisfying Sci-fi read I've decided to sink my teeth into a little bit of Steinbeck while awaiting my most recent order from Powells to arrive so plucked Cannery Row from the shelf. I hope it's decent, it's my first adult attempt at Steinbeck. Still, it comes well-recommended so I have high hopes.
I actually had a mild anxiety attack thinking of all the books I've collected and not having time or the inclination to read them.My heart actually was pounding before I calmed myself with the thought that God willing I will get to them. After all I've had the Gunslinger series on my bookshelves for years and I'm reading them.
I decided to finally begin tonight one of my biggest goals for this summer--to read the entire Harry Potter series, first to last! And tonight, for the first time in too long of a time, I'm jumping into the world of Harry Potter with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ! :)
I have been so busy with preparations for my bookclub meeting tomorrow that I haven't had a chance to truly read the posts today ... yeaks!I am finally getting started on Next by Michael Crichton, my first by him ... wish me luck!
Jess, I am with you. I also just started reading the Harry Potter series last night. We are in this together!
Jess & Tisha,Is this your first time reading the series? If so, how I envy you your first time delving into that amazing world!!
I agree, JT, they are in for a wonderful ride! I can't wait to hear what you think of them as you go along, Jess and Tisha. Have either of you seen the movies?
Lorena, I love your new 'do'... very nice! I had a full fringe (bangs) put in last week, but I hate it! So I'm growing it back out again lol. Back to a side fringe!I'm enjoying Next so far, it's definitely a page turner. I'm only around 5 chapters in though, because I'm spending too much time on here catching up with the 20 million new posts!
Tisha--are you reading all seven of them in one go? We really are in this together! JT--I've read the first four before and about half of the fifth, and then I just decided to wait until they all came out to read them at once.
Val--I've seen the first two movies and really enjoyed them...but I'm going to wait until I finish reading the series to watch any more of them.
Kirsty - thanks, I have had bangs several times now, but this is the first time I have my hair in a bob. I think this is the shortest is ever been. I love the book too! I am only a few chapters ahead of you ... awesome.
Emilee:I read Love in the Time of Cholera years ago (pre-Oprah) and really got into it.
Glad to hear there are "others" out there who do the same.
Tisha:Yesterday, not only bought another book - Drowning Ruth - but went to the library and took out three others - The Law of Similars (Bohjalian), The Double (Saramago - didn't even know who he was until joining the group), and The Host (with all the buzz about these books had to take a look).
Meanwhile, back at the ranch am still reading Schindler's List, The Last Jihad and The Black Cross.
I may need therapy or have to learn to read one book with the left eye and one with the right. Oh, Oh, they may put people in the "home" who think like that.
OK, I'm admitting semi-defeat with McCarthy's Outer Dark. I'm going to read it along side something far more light and fluffy. I'm sort of enjoying it but, by god it's dark. Therefore I have started The Secret Life of Bees this morning and this is alot breezier. Anyone else read it?
Lori, I'm saving Seeing and The Double - I have fallen in love with Saramago so much and want to read him again when I have a few straight days to myself so I can savour - does that make sense? Since handing my notice in, I appear to have found myself really busy with things around the house which I hadn't planned on and this is, annoyingly, eating into my precious reading time. I need to read Saramago when I can indulge myself.
Boof - I really enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees. They are making a movie out of it that releases in October - not quite sure how I feel about that.
