I have just finished A Day and a Night and a Day A Novel - Glen Duncan knocks one out of the park again, managing to squeeze religion or lack thereof into yet another novel! This one centers around a man who is being tortured for information. Very tastefully and sentimentally done.

Moving on to The Secret History next, methinks!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I am currently reading A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly which I should finish in the next coupe of days. Then I will start Street of a Thousand Blossoms by Gail Tsukiyama.

Christroybels (christroybelsyahoocomau) | 9 comments I've just started Wolf Hall. I looked up the reviews here and they were all glowing so I bought it. I'm up to pg 153 and its just starting to hook me.

Jason Cook (rytr_1) | 211 comments I am reading:

Split Infinity -- Dean Koontz (taking my time... it's okay but not great)
Friends and Lovers -- Eric Jerome Dickey (pretty good so far)

I am listening to:

Jane Eyre -- Charlotte Bronte (very good... so much better than I was expecting!)

message 16006: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie (syellico) I just started The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane on audio and am blazing through The Bridges of Madison County. It's a short book, but awwww, it is so good so far. I'm also partially into The Widow of the South and hope to finish it by the 30th so I can use it for the Fall Challenge. It will be my last book for this month I think.

I want to read this so bad - it's been all over the internet, so I think it's calling to me LOL

Janice | 5 comments I am reading Living Like Ed by Ed Begley. Ed started living a very environmentally aware life back in the 70's when it wasn't fashionable. It is great to read about an actor who doesn't give a hoot about Hollywood lifestyles and refuses to enter gasoline powered cars.
This book has humor and humbleness.

[ JT ] | 22 comments Regarding Ender's Game and the sequels: I absolutely adored Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind. Ender's Game was enjoyable, but I found the following 3 to be very thought-provoking reads.

I have noticed, however, that most people do NOT share my opinion. ;) So, if you really enjoyed Ender's Game, I recommend trying Ender in Exile (which is the newest, but also the direct sequel to Ender's Game) and the Ender's Shadow books. These ones have a more "Ender's Game"-feel to them.

Just my $0.02. :)

Still working on A Tale of Two Cities and also opened Odd Thomas. I've heard some good things about it here so thought I'd give it a go.

El Currently reading The Tin Flute by Gabrielle Roy and am really enjoying it.

My copy of Stephen King's Under the Dome A Novel finally came in to the library yesterday, so I'll be picking that up on my lunch today. Everything will probably go to the back burner while I'm reading King, but we also have a very sick dog in the house at the moment also, so maybe I won't be able to get too distracted by this behemoth of a book. :(

message 16023: by JSou (new)

JSou I finally finished Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. I haven't had a whole lot of reading time the past week, so I was glad to get it done. That, and every time I would finish a story, I would immeadiately go back and re-read parts. Very good book.

I am now starting The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

I've just started The Gates by John Connolly. Oddly enough the writing style so far is similar to Terry Pratchett. Luckily, I like Pratchett.

Amanda / rytr_1: i'm new to the group - hope you don't mind me jumping right into the middle of your conversation, but when i saw it was about Ender, i couldn't help myself. Ender's Game is one of my favorite sci fi novels.

i am in the camp Amanda speaks of - i thought so highly of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and didn't enjoy the others in the series so much. but i think that is because i liked the tight terse story - i'm not a big fan of the more 'epic' tales - especially in sci fi. but thanks Amanda for the heads up regarding Ender in Exile. i'll look for it.

I adore Odd Thomas. If you liked the first one, you will like the sequel. I've read the first two; three and four are on my bookshelf, but I haven't gotten to them yet. I adore Odd and Little Ozzie. Probably two of my favorite literary characters ever.

I'm still working on A Great and Terrible Beauty. Will probably have it finished this weekend.

Yes, I'd like to know, too. I've added this one to my TBR list.
I've gotten Jonathan Strange in audio from the library. I started reading it but, although I'm enjoying the story, the book is so large and heavy. I carry it back & forth to work each day and it's quite a tome. I'm going to start from the beginning again and listen to it while I commute.

HMM my favorite Chris Bohj is The Double Bind, - but it is not for everyone. I ended up rereading the ending and then rereading the whole book- such a twist!! - a little harsh in places. I loved The Buffalo Soldier - Water Witches was cool too - but not thrilled with Before I Knew Kindness

message 16036: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments Just finished Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult. It started off good, but I ended up not liking it much at all. Her books are too similar (this one screamed My sister's Keeper), and there were parts of the book that I hated and just didn't understand their purpose.

Back to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Ewww, sorry Dorie, but the only thing worse for me than Casey Affleck, is Ben Affleck! :p I think I'll skip the movie version of that one. The book sounds good though.

JG (Introverted Reader) Claire, Bohjalian's Skeletons at the Feast is a FANTASTIC WWII novel. I can't recommend that one enough. I agree with Marti that The Double Bind is great too.
