message 16006: by El (new)

El Currently reading The Tin Flute by Gabrielle Roy and am really enjoying it.

My copy of Stephen King's Under the Dome A Novel finally came in to the library yesterday, so I'll be picking that up on my lunch today. Everything will probably go to the back burner while I'm reading King, but we also have a very sick dog in the house at the moment also, so maybe I won't be able to get too distracted by this behemoth of a book. :(

message 16008: by JSou (new)

JSou I finally finished Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. I haven't had a whole lot of reading time the past week, so I was glad to get it done. That, and every time I would finish a story, I would immeadiately go back and re-read parts. Very good book.

I am now starting The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Donna, is that Tom Epperson's book? I really loved that one. It's going to be a movie.

I've just started The Gates by John Connolly. Oddly enough the writing style so far is similar to Terry Pratchett. Luckily, I like Pratchett.

Amanda / rytr_1: i'm new to the group - hope you don't mind me jumping right into the middle of your conversation, but when i saw it was about Ender, i couldn't help myself. Ender's Game is one of my favorite sci fi novels.

i am in the camp Amanda speaks of - i thought so highly of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and didn't enjoy the others in the series so much. but i think that is because i liked the tight terse story - i'm not a big fan of the more 'epic' tales - especially in sci fi. but thanks Amanda for the heads up regarding Ender in Exile. i'll look for it.

I adore Odd Thomas. If you liked the first one, you will like the sequel. I've read the first two; three and four are on my bookshelf, but I haven't gotten to them yet. I adore Odd and Little Ozzie. Probably two of my favorite literary characters ever.

I'm still working on A Great and Terrible Beauty. Will probably have it finished this weekend.

Yes, I'd like to know, too. I've added this one to my TBR list.
I've gotten Jonathan Strange in audio from the library. I started reading it but, although I'm enjoying the story, the book is so large and heavy. I carry it back & forth to work each day and it's quite a tome. I'm going to start from the beginning again and listen to it while I commute.

HMM my favorite Chris Bohj is The Double Bind, - but it is not for everyone. I ended up rereading the ending and then rereading the whole book- such a twist!! - a little harsh in places. I loved The Buffalo Soldier - Water Witches was cool too - but not thrilled with Before I Knew Kindness

message 16021: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments Just finished Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult. It started off good, but I ended up not liking it much at all. Her books are too similar (this one screamed My sister's Keeper), and there were parts of the book that I hated and just didn't understand their purpose.

Back to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Ewww, sorry Dorie, but the only thing worse for me than Casey Affleck, is Ben Affleck! :p I think I'll skip the movie version of that one. The book sounds good though.

JG (Introverted Reader) Claire, Bohjalian's Skeletons at the Feast is a FANTASTIC WWII novel. I can't recommend that one enough. I agree with Marti that The Double Bind is great too.

Linda | 887 comments Just finished Day After Night A Novel by Anita Diamant. I give it a 3.4 - good, not great. I have read several WWII/holocaust novels and this one takes a bit of a new twist, but isn't quite as riveting as the others.

Just started The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde and so far so good.

Holly (hollywolly) The main one I'm reading is The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu. It's considered to be the world's first novel. While it's pretty lengthy and focused on Heian Japanese court life/relationships more than a central plot, I am finding it fascinating.

Hi,
Paul Rix here, for those who like something a little bit different, might I suggest 'the reincarnation of Issac Brock' by A.B. Robinson, this probably my favourite book of all time, and I have no idea why, as I hate historical novels with a passion, and this sort of falls into that genre.
A lot of my friends, including my dear wife absolutely loved 'the apothecary' by Dereck Hucklesby, Babs, my wife, has read it twice, personally I just couldn't get into it, I do conceed it is very well written though. It simply isn't my kind of book, but then I couldn't get more than a few pages into Harry Potter and couldn't understand all the fuss made about the De Vinchi code so what so I know!

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen and The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig this week.

i loved Sugar Queen, it was a bit more realistic than Garden Spells, but both were spectacular stories.

i liked Willig's story, it was odd though. it was historically based, but had lots of modern chic-litish elements to it. i'll probably read the others in the series though, it was a fun read.

Jenna, I feel that Handle with Care is very similar to Her Sister's Keeper also, however at no time did I have an actual visceral reaction like I did with Handle with Care. While I expect her books to irritate and cogitate in my brain, I never have disliked a character so much. I expect her to show me all sides of an issue and to make me think of things from other view points. I expect that her books are going to be about children and families in some ways and about relationships. But this one had me reacting to a character in a very negative fashion - almost from the beginning.
The other part of this book was the ending - was it purposeful or accidental - I can't decide....

JG (Introverted Reader) Maria wrote: "i liked Willig's story, it was odd though. it was historically based, but had lots of modern chic-litish elements to it."

I like the rest of the series better than the first. They don't veer quite so close to bodice-ripper territory!

I love Sara Addison Allen's books too. Do you know she has a new one coming out? It looks like it's due out in March. The Girl Who Chased the Moon
