I'm a college student, so I live in a flu breeding ground! Right now something is going around where people are getting all of the symptoms of the flu but the flu tests are coming back negative. I hope everyone's who been sick starts feeling better~
I just started The Big Money today.
I just finished Rebecca. Yeah not my cup of tea. I'm going to shoot over to the group read discussions and see if I wasn't alone. I was not able to read it last month because of my overwhelming scheduling, but I am curious to see if my interpretation was too callous.I am going to start Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Shocking, I know. I never read it.
Man, I am flying through my Top 10 TBR! I like this system. It seems to work for me! :)
Michelle♥ wrote: I am going to start Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Shocking, I know. I never read it...."Michelle, I really enjoyed Lord Of The Flies. I hope you do, too. Let us know what you think of it.
I finished SOUTH OF BROAD by Pat Conroy and gave it 5 stars! Now I am reading MY ENEMY'S CRADLE by Sarah Young.
Susan, I just sent you a pm on the flu stuff. Sorry to hear some of you are not feeling well. I am getting better as the days go on now... but my kids are starting to get it. (awwww...)
Ann from S.C. wrote: "I finished SOUTH OF BROAD by Pat Conroy and gave it 5 stars! Now I am reading MY ENEMY'S CRADLE by Sarah Young."I really enjoyed the Enemy's Cradle. I hope you like it as well.
I just finished The Merchant of Venice by William ShakespeareI satarted reading Animal Farm by George Orwell
I'm still reading Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell and just started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo and got hooked to it... I can't stop...
right now i am reading anne eice pandora but my next book is servant of the bones by anne rice
Yesterday I started The Owl Killers by Karen Maitland, and I think it's going to be a good one. I read her previous book, Company of Liars and really liked it.
Just finished Little Children by Tom Perotta and really enjoyed it. Now I'm continuing on with Percy Jackson in The Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan.
I started "Man in the High Castle" a few days ago, and am just about at the halfway mark.
It's just "eh" for me. Im not a big history person, and alot of this novel is just confusing the hell out of me. I keep forgetting who owns which parts of the US, and I have to wonder why the american born people speak broken, incomplete english.. even when they are thinking internally...
Gack! Not really digging this Dick novel... but determined to finish it!

I started and finished this week end The Lost Symbol, highly recommend it. Dan Brown's best, to date. The story is fast evolving, you stay focused on the end goal, led down blind paths, etc...the ending is excellent.
Lori wrote: "I started "Man in the High Castle" a few days ago, and am just about at the halfway mark."Lori,
It gets better toward the end...less historical and more philosophical.
Sarah wrote: "Marti wrote: "What do you think about The Lace Reader?"I'm not far enough into the book to give a good, solid yay or nay. I'll keep you posted, though!"
I read the Lace Reader several months ago and loved it. The ending is a "wow."
I am reading Olive Kitteridge A Novel in Stories. So far I like it a lot alot although it is a bit like a short story book.
Just passed the halfway mark in The Girl Who Played with Fire. It doesn't seem to have the same spark as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I stayed up reading till the wee hours, so what does that tell you?!
BJ Rose wrote: "Just passed the halfway mark in The Girl Who Played with Fire. It doesn't seem to have the same spark as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I stayed up reading till..."I agree! I not long ago finished the third...IMO it's the best so your in for a treat!
I'm currently reading the seventh scroll, quite near the end so picking up warlock right afterwards to continue the series.
i am reading waayy too many books at once!-cold comfort farm by stella gibbons - this one is kind of on hold, because i am just not into it right now.
-a clash of kings by george r. r. martin - also kind of on hold, but not because i wasn't enjoying it- i just wanted to read a few smaller books, to make some progress in my reading challenge. :)
-the elegance of the hedgehog by muriel barberry - my "main book" at the moment. i like it so far.
-the complete bone by jeff smith - this is a HUGE book, but an easy-to-read comic. i like to read it before bed.
-macbeth by william shakespeare - a reread for a challenge in which i am supposed to reread a book i read in school. i'm liking it much better this time around (probably because for once i am actually paying attention.)
Bunny wrote: "i am reading waayy too many books at once!-cold comfort farm by stella gibbons - this one is kind of on hold, because i am just not into it right now."
Bunny, it will reach a point where you get into it, but that is one really bizarre family (funny-bizarre). If you can find it, watch the movie starring Kate Beckinsale as Flora. The tagline for the movie reads: "She discovered a new branch of her family tree... the one with all the nuts."
Susan wrote: "I am finally getting back into Best Friends Forever A Novelby Jennifer Weiner after moving all last week and then the flu for the whole family on top of that! I want couch time with..."Susan, you poor kid! If it rains it pours for you, doesn't it! I hope you and the kids are feeling better. Sending my best to you.
my mum was in Ireland visiting her parents and she grabbed me the new Marian Keye's book The Brightest Star in the Sky. I dont think it is out here yet so I was really excited when she came home with it!
Dan wrote: "Lori wrote: "I started "Man in the High Castle" a few days ago, and am just about at the halfway mark."
Lori,
It gets better toward the end...less historical and more philosophical.

Thanks Dan. I sure hope it grabs me better as I go on :)

Thanks so much Ro, I'm finally getting my life back after a week in hell........

I hope the book is good.
I'm almost finished with "A Long, Long Time Ago and Essentially True" by Brigid Pasulka. I'm enjoying the way it alternates storylines by chapter. I'm looking for something to read that it is as engrossing and well-written as "The Gargoyle". I haven't read anything as captivating for so long! Any suggestions?
I've started on my last Camilleri's available in translation. Un été ardent by Andrea Camilleri. So far it's as good as the others.
I just finished reading 'Tempted' by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast. It was REALLY GOOD!!! I would read it over and over agian! I can't until the 7th book comes out in that serious!!! :)
I think the next book I would like to read is the 3rd book in the blue bloods serious. . .I heard that was gud.

I thought the end was a serious wow too! I really enjoyed it.
I just finished Best Friends Forever A Novelby Jennifer Weiner and now I am starting One Thousand White Women The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus!
I just finished Food Matters by Mark Bittman and I'm reading Empire Falls by Richard Russo along with the Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
I am reading, "The Time of my Life", by Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi. So far, it's excellent and I only expect it to get better. I'm a major Patrick Swayze fan - he died too young and too hard. I've read parts of other books, but this is the only one I've stuck with for awhile. Will be moving on to the next book as soon as I finish this one. I am also reading my own book that is being published, because you have to keep going over it for errors in the manuscrpit, etc. BTW, it's a book of free-verse poetry, 103 poems, 203 pages. It will be available within the month, and can be bought online. Anyway, I think my next book will be "The Addict". Best wishes to you all.
I'm working my way through Jane Austin The Complete Novels. Finished Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice but I'm taking an Austen-break before moving on to Mansfield Park. Also reading Baudolino by Umberto Eco and enjoying it. Reading Eco always makes me wish I knew more world history.
Started Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt and Angels of Destruction A Novel by Keith Donohue yesterday. Freakonomics is interesting in an unorthodox way. The Stolen Child was Donohue's first novel and I loved it. Angels of Destruction looks like it will be just as good.
Dan wrote: "I'm working my way through Jane Austin The Complete Novels. I can't wait to read super freakonomics and see what other crazy theories they come up with.
Just finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak! One of my new favorite books! Starting The Red Necklace by Sally Gardner!
Just finished The Pact by Jodi Picoult and about to start Isabella Moon by Laura Benedict.I think I might just be tempted to have a bit of a romance-thon soon though. I think I've reached my quota for unhappy endings for the moment!
I'm about 100 pages into Her Fearful Symmetry. It took me a little bit to get into the flow of things but I'm enjoying it!
Just finished last night,"The Alchemyst" by Michael Scott. Look out Harry Potter here come the twins!
I just finished The Whispering Room. Yuck. I've been listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but have discovered that my mom is right...I just don't listen. I keep rewinding, loosing my place, and not focusing. I guess the written word is my only option. I can't Magic Eye and I can't multi-task (listen and walk at the same time). How embarrassing.Just started The Ten-Year Nap by Meg Wolitzer. Wonderful.
I can't do audiobooks either, Maicie. I've tried, but my brain always wanders off just trying to listen.
Maicie wrote: "I just finished The Whispering Room. Yuck. I've been listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but have discovered that my mom is right...I just don't listen. I kee..."Maicie,
Listening to someone read that you can't see is hard for many people. I also forget I am listening and my mind wanders off. I find when I listen to lectures, I need to take notes, or make a trigger list (key words) or even doodle to help me stay in the present and listen. That is called active listening. Another method would be to picture what the person is saying - that helps you use more senses. Ask your mom to help you summarize what she has said or use different words- that also helps with you practice active listening.
The brain is a wonderful muscle, but it works differently for everyone, people are such different types of learners. You could be a better visual learner. (magic eye puzzles don't count) That is what I am - I have had to learn to use what is strong for me (my sight) to help me listen.
Good Luck Maicie!
