I didn't enjoy Atonement either, Jenna. I loved Never Let Me Go though. I finished The Master and Margarita over the weekend, and started House of Leaves.

Paula | 1098 comments I just finished "The Heart-Shaped Box" Joe Hill and am now starting "The Lost Symbol" Dan Brown.

Rachel | 310 comments I just finished Whip It by Shauna Cross and I'm gonna thumb through Locke & Key, Vol. 1 Welcome to Lovecraft and Locke & Key, Vol. 2 Head Games while deciding what to take to work with me tonight.

message 15205: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments I started Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. I don't know if I'm just not in the mood for it or if it's because I tried to read it in the car on the way home from a camping trip, but I just can't really get into it yet. It's a book club book for a F2F book club, though, so I'm hoping it picks up because I really feel compelled to read those all the way through.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Finished a re-read of Romeo and Juliet last night.

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I never re-read a book and think I just may with The Bell Jar. It's been awhile and i know I loved it the first time...???

message 15208: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I just finished reading Labor Day by Joyce Maynard. I loved the book and gave it 5 stars. I have not read such a good story with believable, quirky and lovable qualities in a long time.

I will now read Wilkie Collins The Woman in White.

I'm not a fan of re-reading normally, but I think The Bell Jar would be interesting to revisit. I wonder if I would have the same opinion of it at 31 as I did when I was 13 or 14 and reading it for the first time without the life experience to back up my opinion of it. :)

message 15210: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments That's kinda what I'm thinking! I read it when I was like 16 or 17 now being almost 29 (Sunday) I think I am gonna give it a whirl!

message 15211: by Writerlibrarian (new)

Writerlibrarian I'm reading Utu Un thriller chez les Maoris by Caryl Férey. I had to stop myself reading last night because I think I would have gone through the book in one evening. Quite the thriller, the research is well done and it's keeping me on the edge of my book.

message 15216: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Yesterday I read Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos and The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. I gave them both 5 stars.

Now I'm reading Belong to Me A Novel by Marisa de los Santos. I need to hurry up and finish so I can read Her Fearful Symmetry.

message 15217: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Cait, I loved The Reader.

I'm now reading The Stand (it seems weird that I never read it before) and Dreamfever.

message 15218: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished my Rumpole stories, so am continuing on with Stiff and have started Ella Minnow Pea A Novel in Letters which looks like a lot of fun.

message 15219: by Donna (new)

message 15220: by [deleted user] (new)

I know you did... that's why I decided to read it :-)

Starts out really well...

message 15221: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (liinukka) | 2 comments I just started reading The Vampire Tapestry. Hopefully it'll be nice and spooky, as befitting the season! I was hoping to save it for Halloween week, but I keep getting distracted from my current book (Going Postal), which I can't seem to get excited about.

message 15222: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Just finished The Given Day A Novel by Dennis Lehane. WOW, what a book (all 702 pages). I was reluctant to pick it up at first, but just could not put it down. What a history lesson along the way. I gave it a 5.

what did you think? I love the other Emily Griffin books I have read, but this one.. I just wanted to strangle the main character and just page after page of her trying to talk herself into and out of situations.. I felt like it just went on and on!

message 15228: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) I'm currently reading "The Christmas List: A Novel" by Richard Paul Evans.

A bit early for Christmas reads, however, it is on loan from the library and the queue is long. I was early on in the queue so I was one of the first to get it. There is no renewing this one, and it is only on loan for 2 weeks, so I don't have much choice.

message 15229: by Michelle♥ (last edited Oct 20, 2009 09:55AM) (new)

Michelle♥ Trish, I 100% concur with you about Love The One You're With! I loved the other Emily Giffin's book, but that one totally lagged for me!

I just finished up The Shining and was not that impressed by it. It was my first horror book and it was just ok. I have not seen the movie and plan on renting it this weekend to see how it holds up to the book.

I just started Congo by Michael Crichton. So far it's very interesting. This will be my first Michael Crichton book. He has captivated me thus far in the limited pages I have read. I have seen this movie and liked it.

I plan on starting Thomas Harris' books next on the whole Hannibal Lector saga.

P.S. Linda, yaaaay for Dennis Lehane! :) I have yet to pick up The Given Day, because it looks intimidating, but I'm happy to hear that it was good!

message 15230: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I'm reading The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. The further I read the more I like it. It's now gotten to the point where it's hard to put down. However, it's just to big a book to read in a few sittings!

message 15231: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 6 comments I'm reading 'Blue Sky Adam' by Anthony MacDonald, the 2009 sequel to 'Adam'. I loved his first book about a young man who goes to a vineyard/farmhouse in France and ends up having an affair with another, rather elusive older man. The authorities arrest the older man and the two don't see one another for a few years. The new novel has Adam back at the farmhouse through interesting circumstances. I've just started it, so wonder if he'll meet up with Sylvain (the older man) again now that he's 'of age'. Anthony MacDonald is definitely one of the better writers of gay novels.

Hello!

I just finished The Girl Who Played with Fire by Steig Larsson (loved it!!) which was a loaner from the library, and I am now returning to The Help by Kathryn Stockett and really looking forward to it.

Karen, I have this one, and keep meaning to get to it, but everytime I finish my current read, it just doesnt call to me... so I leave it on the shelf... Perhaps someday, soon!

message 15236: by Kate Padilla (last edited Oct 20, 2009 12:17PM) (new)

Kate Padilla | 5 comments I'm near the end of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. The next ones up for me are Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse and The Time Traveler's Wife.

I really like Anna Karenina, but Anna frustrates me as a character. I'm not done with it yet, though, so we'll see what happens.

message 15237: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments I just finished The Owl Killers and gave it 4 stars. The last chapter I sort of rushed through because I needed to be getting ready for work, but I do want to go back and finish reading the Author's Notes.

I stuffed In the Company of the Courtesan into my workbag before I left the house.

message 15238: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I finished The House at Riverton (Morton) last night - beautifully written story. I've also been reading The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop (Buzbee), and I'm totally digging it. Someone in this group (sorry, I don't remember who) posted about this book in a thread and the title was just so appealing. So, thanks to the person who posted about this book. :-)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Just finished reading a nice small boot but had different expectations about it: Tales & Legends of the Irish Peasantry. Before the I finsihed the awesome book The Fire. Before reading it and only hearing my friend talk about it I felt hyper of anticipation. While reading it I coldn't think of anything else when I wasn't reading. And after having read it, I didn't fele like giving ehr book back and can't think about anything else than the book! I neeeeeeeed to get The eight!!!!

message 15243: by Sandesh (new)

Sandesh Halfway through "Confessions of a Tax Collector" by Richard Yancey. Decent stuff, but doesn't seem worth it considering the exorbitant amount I paid for international shipping.

I finished Witches of Eastwick last nite. Not what I expected to it be. Much less, actually. (sigh)

I am going to stick with the Witch theme and see if Martinez can't raise the bar with his book A Nameless Witch!

message 15246: by Gerlinda (new)

Gerlinda Hightower (gerlinda53) | 5 comments Michelle- The Stand is one of Stephen Kings best books, do not watch the made for TV movie. And it will always stay with you. If you like it then perhaps you'll try "It", again a very good read. Morst of his best writing was done prior to his car accident. Again I do not recommend the made for TV movie.
Anne Rice has anothe good series beside "The Vampire Chronicles", It is the "Mayfaire Witches" I've enjoy them all and they are fast reads.

message 15247: by Janny (new)

Janny (jannywurts) | 142 comments I am into the early chapters of Someone Knows My Name, about an African snatched up as a young girl by the slave trade. I loved the sharp edge of irony in this sentence from chapter 1:

"About me, I have a clutch of abolitionists - big-whiskered, wide-bellied, bald-headed men boycotting sugar but smelling of tobacco and burning candle after candle as they plot deep into the night."

I have to read this quickly for a book club, but it's been well done, so far.

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I am now starting The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. It is becoming a movie and I'd like to see why. I haven't heard much about the book but it's a short quick read and I don't think it's going to compare to my last read.
