What are you reading?
Yesterday I read Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos and The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. I gave them both 5 stars. Now I'm reading Belong to Me A Novel by Marisa de los Santos. I need to hurry up and finish so I can read Her Fearful Symmetry.
Cait, I loved The Reader.I'm now reading The Stand (it seems weird that I never read it before) and Dreamfever.
Finished my Rumpole stories, so am continuing on with Stiff and have started Ella Minnow Pea A Novel in Letters which looks like a lot of fun.
I know you did... that's why I decided to read it :-)
Starts out really well...
Starts out really well...
I just started reading The Vampire Tapestry. Hopefully it'll be nice and spooky, as befitting the season! I was hoping to save it for Halloween week, but I keep getting distracted from my current book (Going Postal), which I can't seem to get excited about.
Just finished The Given Day A Novel by Dennis Lehane. WOW, what a book (all 702 pages). I was reluctant to pick it up at first, but just could not put it down. What a history lesson along the way. I gave it a 5.

The Stand is one of my favorite books. I hope you enjoy it.

Maybe I'll have to suggest to my book club that we watch it. :)
Finishing up in the Shadow of the Wind and then I am going to start my First reads win Hummingbirds by Joshua Gaylord

I hope you like Thomas Harris as I think he is very creative (and maybe a lil disturbed lol)
Almost finished with Love the One You're With -------------------
what did you think? I love the other Emily Griffin books I have read, but this one.. I just wanted to strangle the main character and just page after page of her trying to talk herself into and out of situations.. I felt like it just went on and on!
I'm currently reading "The Christmas List: A Novel" by Richard Paul Evans.A bit early for Christmas reads, however, it is on loan from the library and the queue is long. I was early on in the queue so I was one of the first to get it. There is no renewing this one, and it is only on loan for 2 weeks, so I don't have much choice.
Trish, I 100% concur with you about Love The One You're With! I loved the other Emily Giffin's book, but that one totally lagged for me!I just finished up The Shining and was not that impressed by it. It was my first horror book and it was just ok. I have not seen the movie and plan on renting it this weekend to see how it holds up to the book.
I just started Congo by Michael Crichton. So far it's very interesting. This will be my first Michael Crichton book. He has captivated me thus far in the limited pages I have read. I have seen this movie and liked it.
I plan on starting Thomas Harris' books next on the whole Hannibal Lector saga.
P.S. Linda, yaaaay for Dennis Lehane! :) I have yet to pick up The Given Day, because it looks intimidating, but I'm happy to hear that it was good!
I'm reading The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. The further I read the more I like it. It's now gotten to the point where it's hard to put down. However, it's just to big a book to read in a few sittings!
I'm reading 'Blue Sky Adam' by Anthony MacDonald, the 2009 sequel to 'Adam'. I loved his first book about a young man who goes to a vineyard/farmhouse in France and ends up having an affair with another, rather elusive older man. The authorities arrest the older man and the two don't see one another for a few years. The new novel has Adam back at the farmhouse through interesting circumstances. I've just started it, so wonder if he'll meet up with Sylvain (the older man) again now that he's 'of age'. Anthony MacDonald is definitely one of the better writers of gay novels.
Hello!
I just finished The Girl Who Played with Fire by Steig Larsson (loved it!!) which was a loaner from the library, and I am now returning to The Help by Kathryn Stockett and really looking forward to it.

Karen, I have this one, and keep meaning to get to it, but everytime I finish my current read, it just doesnt call to me... so I leave it on the shelf... Perhaps someday, soon!

I'm near the end of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. The next ones up for me are Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse and The Time Traveler's Wife.I really like Anna Karenina, but Anna frustrates me as a character. I'm not done with it yet, though, so we'll see what happens.
I just finished The Owl Killers and gave it 4 stars. The last chapter I sort of rushed through because I needed to be getting ready for work, but I do want to go back and finish reading the Author's Notes.I stuffed In the Company of the Courtesan into my workbag before I left the house.
I finished The House at Riverton (Morton) last night - beautifully written story. I've also been reading The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop (Buzbee), and I'm totally digging it. Someone in this group (sorry, I don't remember who) posted about this book in a thread and the title was just so appealing. So, thanks to the person who posted about this book. :-)
I finished reading Victoria Hislop's The Return recently so now I'm on to Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Been hearing positive reviews about this book so I'm looking forward to reading it and seeing for myself =)

Just finished reading Red Dragon by Thomas Harris! I liked the movie and loved the book! Starting The Stand by Stephen King!
Just finished reading a nice small boot but had different expectations about it: Tales & Legends of the Irish Peasantry. Before the I finsihed the awesome book The Fire. Before reading it and only hearing my friend talk about it I felt hyper of anticipation. While reading it I coldn't think of anything else when I wasn't reading. And after having read it, I didn't fele like giving ehr book back and can't think about anything else than the book! I neeeeeeeed to get The eight!!!!
Halfway through "Confessions of a Tax Collector" by Richard Yancey. Decent stuff, but doesn't seem worth it considering the exorbitant amount I paid for international shipping.
I finished Witches of Eastwick last nite. Not what I expected to it be. Much less, actually. (sigh)
I am going to stick with the Witch theme and see if Martinez can't raise the bar with his book A Nameless Witch!

Michelle- The Stand is one of Stephen Kings best books, do not watch the made for TV movie. And it will always stay with you. If you like it then perhaps you'll try "It", again a very good read. Morst of his best writing was done prior to his car accident. Again I do not recommend the made for TV movie.Anne Rice has anothe good series beside "The Vampire Chronicles", It is the "Mayfaire Witches" I've enjoy them all and they are fast reads.
I am into the early chapters of Someone Knows My Name, about an African snatched up as a young girl by the slave trade. I loved the sharp edge of irony in this sentence from chapter 1:"About me, I have a clutch of abolitionists - big-whiskered, wide-bellied, bald-headed men boycotting sugar but smelling of tobacco and burning candle after candle as they plot deep into the night."
I have to read this quickly for a book club, but it's been well done, so far.

Don't be daunted by the size of The Given Day. It is really (believe it or not) a fast read.

Ronna, that is how I felt after reading The fire!!!! I tried to talk about it and just couldn't.
I am now starting The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. It is becoming a movie and I'd like to see why. I haven't heard much about the book but it's a short quick read and I don't think it's going to compare to my last read.
I finished THE SABBTHDAY RIVER and really liked it. Now I am reading a really creepy book by John Saul IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT.
I just started Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. I am reading three books currently that are all about 1000 pages for different groups, so I thought a little light reading would be just the thing.
Lyn wrote: "I just started Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. I am reading three books currently that are all about 1000 pages for different groups, so I thought a little light reading ..."I loved Just Listen. Hope you do too!
I'm starting Benny & Shrimp, a romance between a tidy, widowed librarian named Shrimp and Benny, a gentle overworked milk farmer. It sounded sweet and a quick read.
I'm on chapter 3 of "Half Moon: Henry Hudson and the Voyage that Redrew the Map of the New World" by Douglas Hunter. I was lucky enough to win a copy, and I must say, it's a fascinating read so far.
I'm in the middle of a gigantic biography of Teddy Roosevelt. I'm reading the second volume, Theodore Rex. Great stuff -- it's history that reads like a novel. I'd highly recommend the first book, The Rise of Teddy Roosevelt, which won the Pulitzer.

I have been in the process of reading Deathstalker War by Simon R. Green for WAY too long (it's only 500ish pages). I like the book so far and the series (Science Fiction/Adventure with lots of violence and some political intrigue thrown in for good measure). But for some reason, I just can't sit down and READ it for any extended period of time.10 pages here, 10 pages there... Not the way I like to read a book.
Dorie wrote: "Monef - yeah, reading "The Road" is dangerous to your peace of mind. Have you started feeling like you should be stockpiling supplies yet?Just finished my last book and I'll be starting[book:F..."
Finished The Road. It was just so haunting. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to read that book again. I read the last 30 or so pages on a flight from NYC to San Francisco and was bawling my eyes out. Everyone thought I was crazy. I had to follow the intensity of that with a breezy read so I went for 'Love the One You're With' by Emily Giffin. It was okay, well written but I did not love the character.
I have now started Little Bee by Chris Cleave, so far it looks like it is going to be another round of intensity/heartbreak.
